A practical starting profile for a 16:9 tour is H.264 at 1080p30, 10 Mbps CBR, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval—provided your source video, Mac, and upload connection can sustain it.
What you need before event day
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check well ahead of the event. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility and activation.
- A finished tour video and an encoder. OBS Studio is a free, open-source macOS option. Its current download page lists macOS 13.0 or newer and separate downloads for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs: OBS Studio downloads.
- A reliable wired or wireless internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and leaving 20% headroom above the stream bitrate.
The Mac mini’s model and workload matter. Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications list M4 and M4 Pro versions with hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW encoding and decoding (Apple Mac mini (2024) technical specifications). That describes supported media capabilities, not guaranteed OBS performance for every resolution, scene, or concurrent task. OBS likewise cautions that compatible hardware does not guarantee it can stream at a chosen encoder setting or scene complexity (OBS system requirements).

Set up the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event. Enter its title, description, visibility, and schedule, then save the event. YouTube calls a stream sent from software or hardware an encoder stream; it can carry prepared video and other production elements. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
- Open the event’s Live Control Room and locate its stream settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, share it, or include it in a public recording. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose an unlisted event for a private rehearsal if appropriate. Confirm the event’s visibility and schedule before the public broadcast.
Install OBS and prepare the tour
- Download OBS from the official OBS downloads page. Choose the Intel or Apple Silicon build that matches your Mac mini, and confirm the Mac is running macOS 13.0 or newer, as listed by OBS.
- In OBS, prepare a simple program output centered on the finished tour video. Add a title card, property details, narration, or ambient audio only if they are part of your production. OBS’s exact current media-source and playback controls are not documented in the cited setup guidance, so follow the controls shown in your installed version rather than relying on unverified menu names.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube event with the stream URL and key. For ordinary SDR streaming, use the encoder’s YouTube RTMPS profile when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest; HLS is an alternative when an encoder needs capabilities unavailable through RTMP(S), and HLS has higher latency because it sends segments. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Choose a conservative video and audio profile
For a typical 16:9 prerecorded tour, use the following as a starting point, not a guarantee. Match output to the source video where possible; upscaling a lower-resolution file does not add detail.

| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube’s published H.264 ingest guidance supports this common encoder format. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps | A practical baseline for a standard 16:9 tour; use the source’s supported resolution and frame rate. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for encoder streams. |
| Video bitrate | 10 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC | A supported audio codec in YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
For a higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate stream, upload needs rise substantially. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 17 Mbps at 1080p60 and 42 Mbps at 2160p30. A Mac mini’s hardware media engine alone is not a reason to choose 4K; use it only if the source, encoder workload, and connection can support the setting reliably.

Check upload capacity and rehearse
- Run an upload speed test from the same connection and location you will use for the event. YouTube recommends at least 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate. For a 10 Mbps video stream, that means planning for about 12 Mbps of available upload capacity for that stream; this is the 20% margin applied to the bitrate, not a separate YouTube published threshold. Include any simultaneous stream or backup feed in the total.
- Configure the encoder at least two hours before the scheduled event. Start sending the encoder feed at least 15 minutes before the event so YouTube can receive it and you can inspect the preview.
- Rehearse the full tour with representative movement and sound. In Live Control Room, check that the preview appears, picture and sound are correct, and stream health is acceptable. Resolve warnings before going live.
- During the broadcast, monitor stream health, audio, and image quality. A successful initial preview does not guarantee that changing network conditions or a long event will remain trouble-free.
YouTube’s own guidance recommends a speed test and cautions that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth (encoder settings; streaming tips).
Go live, end the event, and check the archive
- Once the preview and stream health are ready, select Go Live in Live Control Room at the scheduled time.
- When the tour is over, end the broadcast in YouTube, then stop sending the feed from OBS. Confirm that the event has ended rather than leaving the encoder output running.
- If you want to retain the YouTube replay, verify the archive after the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; if you also record locally, check that the local recording is growing and that you have storage available. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
When OBS is enough—and when hardware may help
For one prepared tour video with limited overlays and a single output, software encoding is a reasonable place to start. YouTube supports both software and standalone hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events (encoder settings; encoder streaming instructions). Hardware is not mandatory for a prerecorded tour. It may make sense when a production needs multiple camera inputs, dedicated controls, or a more elaborate live workflow; confirm the encoder supports your sources and output settings before buying one.

Common problems and fixes
- You cannot create a live event: check channel verification and live-streaming restrictions. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for enablement.
- YouTube receives no signal: verify the event’s stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the encoder is sending, and check that the correct event is open in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it if it was exposed.
- Preview is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: compare the total outgoing bitrate with actual upload capacity, preserve the 20% headroom, and reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the profile. Rehearse again after changing settings.
- Picture looks soft or motion looks poor: check that the output does not exceed the useful resolution and frame rate of the source. For fast camera movement, a higher frame rate can help, but it requires more bitrate and upload capacity.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: check that the intended audio is included in the OBS program output, confirm the selected audio codec is supported, and inspect the complete video/audio path during rehearsal.
- The replay is missing: check the event’s archive after ending it and confirm whether the broadcast length and YouTube processing have affected availability. Keep a local recording if the replay is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the tour is a prepared video and you want the YouTube channel to keep looping it without leaving the Mac mini on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera walk-through. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
