YouTube supports continuous broadcasts, but that does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: you must test the exact media, upload connection, restart behavior, and monitoring setup. Before going live, confirm permission for every recording and performance you plan to broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that can go live and access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- A computer or server that can run an FFmpeg build suitable for your media, with enough storage and resources to process the stream continuously.
- The kirtan video or audio files you are authorized to broadcast. If you have audio only, pair it with a suitable still image or video so the output includes a video stream.
- A stable upload connection with enough sustained capacity for the selected stream bitrate, plus room for normal network variation.
- A plan for monitoring the stream and restarting FFmpeg or the host if either fails.
FFmpeg is an encoder, not a complete 24/7 service. Google Cloud documentation names FFmpeg as an example encoder, and YouTube’s API documentation describes a continuous-broadcast scenario; neither guarantees that a particular computer, network, FFmpeg process, or broadcast will run without interruption.

Choose an ingestion protocol and stream settings
RTMPS is the standard starting point
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. In YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance, accessed in October 2026, the supported RTMP/RTMPS video codecs include H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Follow the protocol, endpoint, and current settings shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed ingest address. Keep your stream key private.

Use the bitrate for your chosen quality, not a universal number
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not measurements of your connection or guarantees of a stable stream. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for other combinations.

Choose a quality your uplink can sustain, not merely the highest setting your source file allows. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

When HLS may make sense
HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion option, not RTMP with different labels. It may suit workflows that need its supported codecs or HDR handling, but YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of one to four seconds. Only choose HLS if your encoder and workflow support those protocol-specific requirements.
Prepare the kirtan source and rights
Check what the files contain
Before building a loop, verify that each file has the intended audio and video streams, plays from beginning to end, and does not contain an unintended silence, black frame, abrupt cutoff, or unrelated material. If you are mixing multiple recordings, make a playlist or joined source and listen through transitions. A still image can accompany an audio-only recording, but make sure it is appropriate and that you have permission to use it.

Confirm permissions for the exact recording and performance
Punjabi kirtan’s devotional subject matter does not by itself establish that a recording is cleared for a public livestream. Rights may differ for the underlying composition or shabad, an arrangement, the sound recording, and the performers’ performance. Confirm that you have permission for the exact material and the territories where you plan to broadcast. The status of any particular recording or performance cannot be determined from its genre or age alone.
Configure YouTube Live and FFmpeg
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream and review the current stream protocol, ingest endpoint, stream key, and stream settings displayed for your channel. Channel access and live-stream availability can depend on YouTube’s current account requirements.
- Choose the matching encoder settings. Select the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio codec, audio bitrate, and sample rate. Use the relevant YouTube recommendation and ensure the source and your FFmpeg build support the selection.
- Keep the key out of public files and logs. Treat the stream key like a password. Store it in a protected configuration or environment variable, restrict access to the host, and do not paste it into a public script, repository, screenshot, or support post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings before continuing.
- Configure FFmpeg to loop the source and send it to the ingest endpoint. The command depends on whether you are looping a video, combining audio with a still image, using a playlist, and which codecs your FFmpeg build supports. Use the installed FFmpeg documentation and test options locally; the official FFmpeg documentation is broad and version-dependent, and there is no single tested command that covers every kirtan source and host.
- Start a private or unlisted test before the public broadcast. Verify that YouTube receives both audio and video, the loop returns cleanly to the beginning, sound remains synchronized, and the stream health indicators stay stable for a representative period.
- Switch to the intended audience setting only after testing. Confirm title, description, visibility, and start time in Live Control Room, then monitor the broadcast rather than assuming that a successful initial connection means the stream will remain healthy.
Build reliability around the FFmpeg process
A process that loops media can still fail when the host reboots, FFmpeg exits, storage fills, the source becomes unavailable, or the uplink drops. YouTube’s continuous-broadcast API scenario is not a promise of automatic reconnection or a maximum-duration policy. Plan these parts of the operation before relying on a 24/7 channel.

- Host availability: Keep the computer or server powered, prevent sleep, and account for operating-system updates, restarts, and thermal or resource limits.
- Process recovery: Decide how FFmpeg will be restarted after an exit and how you will notice repeated failures. Test a deliberate stop and restart before launch.
- Network resilience: Measure sustained upload under realistic conditions and check for packet loss or interruptions. A speed-test peak is not proof that a connection will hold the stream bitrate continuously.
- Media continuity: Ensure the loop and playlist continue after file boundaries, and that every referenced file remains available to the process.
- Monitoring: Check YouTube stream health and the actual viewer output. Assign someone or an alerting process to notice missing video, silence, dropped ingest, or a failed host.
- Key security: Restrict who can read the key and have a recovery plan to rotate it if exposed.
Troubleshooting common failures
