How to stream PS5 games to a Steam Deck with PXPlay

Yes. You can stream a PS5 to a Steam Deck by installing PXPlay (formerly PSPlay), the third-party PlayStation Remote Play client for Linux, registering your console, and then selecting the connection mode that matches your situation. Use Local Connect when the Deck and PS5 are on the same home network. Use Remote Connect when you are away from home or a local connection cannot be established.

You need Remote Play enabled on the PS5, a Steam Deck running SteamOS/Linux, network access, and a valid license for PXPlay’s full Linux PC application. PXPlay’s developer lists Linux x64 PCs as supported, but the project is not Sony-certified or endorsed. A single PXPlay PC license key covers both Linux and Windows; check the developer’s current information at PXPlay / PSPlay Application Hosting.

What you need before starting

Prepare the following before opening PXPlay:

  • A PS5 with the latest system software available to it and a PlayStation Network account.
  • A Steam Deck running SteamOS, which is Linux-based, with enough storage to install the PXPlay Linux x64 application.
  • A network connection for both devices. For Local Connect, the Deck and PS5 must be able to communicate on the same home network. For Remote Connect, the PS5 must be reachable through your internet connection.
  • Remote Play enabled in the PS5 settings.
  • A valid license for PXPlay’s full PC version. The developer describes PXPlay as a third-party client and states that the PC port requires a license.

PXPlay is not the same service as Steam Remote Play. PXPlay receives the PS5’s Remote Play stream directly; Steam is only the launcher or controller interface you may use on the Deck. Valve’s general streaming guidance is available in its Steam Remote Play support documentation, but that advice is not a PXPlay-specific performance guarantee.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Choose System.
  3. Open Remote Play.
  4. Turn on Enable Remote Play.

If you want to start a session while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, enable both network wake-up options as well:

  1. Return to Settings > System.
  2. Open Power Saving.
  3. Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
  5. Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

Without those Rest Mode settings, PXPlay may connect only when the console is already powered on. Sony’s instructions for the full setup are in How to use PlayStation Remote Play on PC and Mac.

Install PXPlay on the Steam Deck

Use the Linux desktop environment

PXPlay’s developer lists Linux x64 PC support, which is the relevant build for a Steam Deck. Switch to the Deck’s desktop environment, obtain the current Linux PC application from the developer, and follow the package’s installation or launch instructions. The exact package format and installation screens can change, so use the instructions accompanying the version you download rather than assuming that a Windows installer or mobile application will work.

After installation, launch PXPlay in Desktop Mode and complete its license activation. If you prefer to start it from the Deck’s game-oriented interface later, add the installed PXPlay executable as a non-Steam game using the Steam desktop client. That shortcut changes how the program is launched; it does not turn PXPlay into Steam Remote Play or alter the PS5 connection method.

Confirm that you installed the PC build

PXPlay is available under names associated with its earlier PSPlay branding, and mobile versions are not interchangeable with the Linux PC port. Before troubleshooting, verify that you installed the Linux x64 desktop application and that its license is valid. The developer’s platform and licensing notes are maintained at the PXPlay application-hosting repository.

Register the PS5 in PXPlay

PXPlay must associate the application with your console before it can stream games. The registration flow is handled inside the app:

  1. Open PXPlay on the Steam Deck.
  2. Select Register PS (the wording may appear as a similarly named registration command in a newer build).
  3. Enter the registration number shown by the app when prompted.
  4. Sign in with the PlayStation Network account requested by the registration screen.
  5. Complete the registration and wait for PXPlay to add the PS5 to its console list.

PXPlay’s help documentation also describes manual registration for situations in which the normal process cannot complete. The account-ID requirement can vary with console firmware, so do not apply old firmware-specific instructions as a universal rule for current PS5 systems. Follow the registration prompts in the installed version and consult the developer’s current help page at PXPlay | Help if the app requests information that is not obvious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic remote connection, introduced by the developer in PXPlay 5.0.0, has additional conditions. Registration must include a login, the PS5 must be connected to PlayStation Network, the console firmware must be current, and the console must be the primary console when more than one console is associated with the account. The feature is explicitly experimental, so successful registration does not guarantee that automatic remote connection will work on every network.

Choose the right connection mode

PXPlay option Use it when Network path Setup burden Reliability considerations
Local Connect The Steam Deck and PS5 are on the same home network. Directly across the local network. Usually the simplest choice after registration. Does not depend on internet-side remote-access configuration, but Wi-Fi congestion or client isolation can still prevent discovery.
Remote Connect You are away from home or Local Connect cannot reach the console. Across the internet to the home network. May work through PXPlay’s automatic method, or may require router changes. Depends on PSN availability, NAT behavior, router rules, upload capacity at home, and the quality of the network used by the Deck. PXPlay labels automatic remote connection experimental.

Stream at home with Local Connect

Local Connect is the practical default when both devices are in the same house. It avoids the extra variables of internet routing and usually requires no port forwarding.

  1. Turn on the PS5, or leave it in Rest Mode with the wake-up settings enabled.
  2. Connect the Steam Deck and PS5 to the same home network. If your router exposes separate guest, isolation, or IoT networks, place both devices on the normal private network.
  3. Open PXPlay and select the registered PS5.
  4. Choose Local Connect.
  5. Wait for the console handshake, then accept the connection on the Deck if PXPlay asks for confirmation.
  6. Start a game from the PS5 interface and use the Deck’s controls as the remote controller.

If the PS5 is not found, first verify that the two devices really use the same network rather than two isolated wireless networks. Confirm that Remote Play is enabled, leave the PS5 awake for the first test, and retry registration or discovery from PXPlay. A successful local session is a useful baseline before attempting remote access.

Stream from outside home with Remote Connect

Try PXPlay’s automatic remote connection first

Choose Remote Connect when the Deck is on a different network from the PS5. PXPlay’s automatic remote connection can simplify setup, but it is an experimental feature rather than a guaranteed service.

  • The PS5 can sign in to PlayStation Network.
  • The console firmware is up to date.
  • You logged in during PXPlay registration.
  • If the account has multiple consoles, the intended PS5 is the primary console.
  • The PS5 remains online, with the Rest Mode network and wake-up options enabled if it is sleeping.

After selecting Remote Connect, allow PXPlay to attempt its automatic path. If it succeeds, you can start a session without manually editing the router. If it fails, the failure does not necessarily mean the Deck or PS5 is defective; NAT and router policies commonly determine whether an inbound remote session can be established.

Understand NAT limitations

PXPlay’s documentation warns that automatic remote connection may fail with restrictive network conditions, including NAT type 3. NAT type 3 generally means that the network permits fewer inbound paths than the remote-play connection needs. Public Wi-Fi, carrier-grade mobile networks, dormitory networks, and managed workplace networks can impose similar restrictions that you cannot change from the Deck.

Use router assistance only when necessary

PXPlay documents UPnP and manual UDP port forwarding as possible troubleshooting routes. UPnP lets compatible applications request router mappings automatically; manual forwarding creates those mappings yourself. Router interfaces and port requirements differ by manufacturer, firmware, and internet provider, so do not copy a port list intended for a different model without checking PXPlay’s current help instructions and your router’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use manual forwarding, make the change only on the router at the PS5’s home location, target the PS5’s current local IP address, and reserve that address so it does not change later. Record the original settings so you can remove the rule if it is unnecessary. Avoid exposing unrelated administration services, and do not forward ports on the Deck’s temporary network. If the home router is controlled by an internet provider or uses CGNAT, you may need the provider to supply a public IPv4 address or another supported option; PXPlay cannot override a network that does not permit inbound traffic.

Network requirements and realistic performance expectations

Sony’s official Remote Play guidance states a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures are Sony Interactive Entertainment’s service requirements and recommendation, not a PXPlay benchmark and not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, latency, or image quality. Sony also notes that performance varies by game and network environment; the available documentation does not establish Steam Deck-specific performance measurements.

For a useful session, consider the complete path rather than only the Deck’s download speed:

  • For remote play, the home connection’s upload capacity matters because the PS5 sends the video stream outward.
  • Latency and jitter can make controls feel delayed even when a speed test shows sufficient bandwidth.
  • Wireless interference can cause bursts of packet loss. Keep the Deck within strong Wi-Fi coverage and avoid congested channels where possible.
  • A wired connection for the PS5, when practical, removes one wireless segment. Valve’s general Steam streaming guidance favors wired networking for best results, but that is broad advice rather than a PXPlay requirement.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and video uploads on the home network while testing.

Begin with a short session using a game that does not punish occasional input delay. Once the connection is stable, test the titles you actually intend to play. Do not infer a fixed performance level from one network or one game.

Troubleshoot by symptom

PXPlay cannot find the PS5 on the home network

  • Confirm Remote Play is enabled in Settings > System > Remote Play.
  • Make sure both devices are on the same private network, not a guest network or an isolated access point.
  • Wake the PS5 fully for the first test instead of relying on Rest Mode.
  • Restart PXPlay, the Deck’s network connection, and the PS5, then try Local Connect again.
  • Check whether a mesh node, extender, or access point is blocking communication between wireless clients.

Registration fails or the code is rejected

  • Use the registration number generated by the current PXPlay session; do not reuse an expired code.
  • Sign in with the PlayStation Network account associated with the console.
  • Confirm the PS5 is online and its firmware is current.
  • Read the registration prompts carefully because account-ID requirements can differ by console firmware.
  • Use the manual-registration guidance in PXPlay | Help only when the normal flow cannot complete, and follow the instructions for the current application version.

Remote Connect works locally but fails away from home

  • Verify that the PS5 can reach PlayStation Network and that the home internet connection is active.
  • Confirm the console is the primary console if your account has multiple consoles.
  • Check the network type at the remote location. NAT type 3 or a managed network may block the automatic method.
  • Try PXPlay’s automatic remote connection again after confirming the prerequisites, remembering that the feature is experimental.
  • If your router permits it, review UPnP status or carefully follow the current manual UDP-forwarding guidance. Remove test rules that do not help.

The PS5 will not wake from Rest Mode

First test with the console fully awake. If that works, recheck both Rest Mode options: Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. The PS5 must also remain signed in and connected to the network. A power strip, router schedule, or overnight network shutdown can prevent wake-up even when the PS5 settings are correct.

The picture freezes or controls feel delayed

  • Test the Deck closer to the wireless access point.
  • Use a wired connection for the PS5 if available.
  • Stop other high-bandwidth activity on the home and remote networks.
  • Compare a local session with a remote session. If local play is stable and remote play is not, focus on the internet path, NAT, and upload capacity rather than the Deck installation.
  • Remember that Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation do not define latency or guarantee a particular visual result in PXPlay.

PXPlay versus Sony’s official Remote Play app

These are separate clients with different platform coverage. Sony’s official Remote Play pages list support for Windows and Mac computers along with selected mobile, television, and console platforms. PXPlay’s developer lists Linux x64 PC support, which is why it is relevant to SteamOS. Sony does not officially list the Steam Deck as a supported target for its own PC application in the cited guidance, and PXPlay is not Sony-certified.

Question PXPlay Sony’s official Remote Play app
Can it run as a Linux PC application? The developer lists Linux x64 support. Linux support is not listed on the cited official PC/Mac page.
Who provides it? A third-party developer; Sony endorsement or certification is not stated. Sony Interactive Entertainment.
License requirement The full PC port requires a valid license; one PC key works on Linux and Windows. Use the official app under Sony’s own account and platform requirements.
Steam Deck relevance Linux support makes it the practical route described here. The cited official listing does not establish Steam Deck support.

Choose PXPlay when running a Linux client on the Deck is the priority and you accept third-party software. Choose an officially listed platform when Sony’s own client and support path matter more than SteamOS compatibility.

Pre-flight checklist for your first session

  • PS5 firmware is current and the console can sign in to PlayStation Network.
  • Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play is on.
  • Rest Mode networking and wake-up are enabled if you need the console to sleep.
  • The Linux x64 PXPlay PC application is installed on the Steam Deck.
  • The PXPlay license is activated.
  • The PS5 is registered through Register PS.
  • You chose Local Connect on the same home network or Remote Connect from elsewhere.
  • For remote access, automatic connection prerequisites are satisfied, and you understand that the feature is experimental.
  • Other downloads and uploads are paused while you establish a baseline.

What this setup can and cannot promise

PXPlay provides a way to use the Steam Deck as a Linux client for PS5 Remote Play. It does not make games run natively on the Deck, remove the PS5’s need to stay online, or guarantee a fixed frame rate and latency. Local streaming is normally the lower-complexity path. Remote streaming is possible, but its success depends on the PS5’s network, the router and NAT behavior at home, the network used by the Deck, and PXPlay’s experimental automatic-connection feature or a carefully configured alternative.
