To stream a prerecorded video from Windows 11, create or schedule a YouTube Live event, connect encoder software to it with your YouTube stream URL and key, then play the local video as the encoder’s source. For a scheduled event, start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview, and click Go live in Live Control Room when you’re ready. You need a verified channel with live streaming enabled and no live streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.

Before you start: check your channel and video

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified, and YouTube must not have restricted its live streaming in the past 90 days. Test with a private or unlisted stream before your public event. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
  • Have the prerecorded video available on your Windows 11 computer and use encoder software that can send a stream to YouTube. OBS is one option, not a requirement; YouTube documents other software and hardware encoders too. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • Check that you have permission to stream the video, music, and other material it contains. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and copyright rules still apply to prerecorded content; an encoder does not grant rights or make reused material eligible for monetization.

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled livestream. These are preparation recommendations, not mandatory technical requirements. They leave time to catch problems before viewers arrive.

Create or schedule your YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
  2. For an immediate stream, use the Stream tab. To set up an event in advance, open Manage and schedule a stream.
  3. Set the title, description, audience designation, and privacy deliberately. Scheduling can create a shareable watch page and let viewers set reminders. Privacy defaults vary by age: YouTube says accounts for users aged 13–17 default to private, while those for users 18 and older default to public; you can change the setting.
  4. Open the event’s stream settings and locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions for event setup and stream details are in its encoder guide and live stream settings.

Connect encoder software to YouTube

  1. Open your encoder. If it offers a YouTube destination or account integration, choose that and select the correct event or stream.
  2. If it requires manual configuration, copy the event’s stream URL into the encoder’s server field and its stream key into the key field. The exact field labels vary by app.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Don’t show it in screenshots or share it. You can reuse or reset a key in stream settings; if it is exposed, reset it.

For a basic prerecorded-file stream, use the encoder’s standard YouTube or RTMPS option if available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. HLS is a separate ingest option that may suit requirements such as HDR or codecs outside RTMP support, but it has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Use HLS only when your encoder or media requirements call for it; see YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Add the prerecorded video as the encoder source

  1. In the encoder, add the local video file as the video source. Depending on the app, this may be called a media source or file source.
  2. Set the file’s audio as the stream audio, and confirm that both picture and sound appear in the encoder preview. Source names and controls differ by application.
  3. If the video must repeat, enable looping in the encoder’s file-source settings if that control is available. Check the behavior before the event: looping options and transitions are application-specific.
  4. Choose output settings the Windows computer and upload connection can sustain. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the content where practical, and use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits every setup.

YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges and other encoder settings by resolution and frame rate in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Run a test with motion and audio similar to the actual video, since a static test image may not reveal the same connection or playback problems.

Preview, go live, and monitor playback

  1. Start streaming from the encoder. For a scheduled event, wait for the incoming signal and preview to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  2. Check the preview for the right picture, audio, framing, and timing. When it is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
  3. While the stream runs, monitor stream health and listen for audio problems. YouTube recommends checking audio and video and the event’s preview; more guidance is available in its streaming tips.

For HDR, follow YouTube’s specialized instructions rather than applying HDR settings to an ordinary SDR video. Its documented OBS RTMP HDR workflow specifies OBS 30.1 or later and particular sources and encoding settings: Stream HDR video on YouTube.

End the stream and find its archive

When the video is finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop sending output from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in YouTube Studio’s Live tab; see its encoder guide.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm that the encoder is using the correct event’s stream URL and key, and that it has actually started sending. If you are unsure whether the key is valid, check the event’s stream settings and replace it there and in the encoder.
  • The encoder preview works, but YouTube’s preview does not: Check the destination, URL, and key; confirm that the event is open in Live Control Room; then allow time for the incoming preview to appear before selecting Go live.
  • The video appears without sound: Verify that the file’s audio is selected as the encoder’s stream audio, then play the file and check the encoder’s audio meters or preview before starting the event.
  • The stream stutters or loses quality: Reduce output quality or bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain, then test again. YouTube provides recommendations by resolution and frame rate; a higher setting is not useful if the connection cannot reliably deliver it.
  • The file stops instead of repeating: Check the encoder’s file-source loop setting. Looping behavior is specific to the application and source configuration.
  • Your channel cannot go live: Check channel verification and whether a live streaming restriction applies. YouTube requires verification and no live streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a Windows PC on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
