You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an AWS EC2 instance in Mumbai by running an encoder on the instance and giving it the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region, ap-south-1, provide the instance with outbound internet access, and configure the encoder to use RTMPS when supported. YouTube’s current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and sufficient upload headroom. The exact EC2 size and FFmpeg command depend on your media and encoding workload; neither is established by the guidance cited below.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An AWS account with permission to launch and configure an EC2 instance in Mumbai (
ap-south-1). - The prerecorded video on the instance or in storage the instance can access, plus an encoder such as FFmpeg.
- A plan for reliable outbound bandwidth, stream monitoring, and secure handling of your YouTube stream key.
This is an encoder workflow: the EC2 instance sends the video as a live feed to YouTube. It does not make the video a live camera broadcast, and the region alone does not establish a latency or availability guarantee.

1. Create or schedule a YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you have scheduled. YouTube’s walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter them into your encoder’s corresponding fields. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; treat the key as a credential and do not publish it or place it in a public script repository. Details are in Manage live stream settings.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before relying on it again.
2. Launch an EC2 instance in Mumbai
In the AWS console, select Asia Pacific (Mumbai), region code ap-south-1, when launching the instance. AWS lists regional EC2 endpoints at Amazon EC2 service endpoints.

Instance sizing depends on what the encoder does. Copying or remuxing a compatible stream generally imposes a different compute workload from transcoding; resolution, frame rate, software versus hardware encoding, and reliability needs also matter. No single instance type is established as suitable for every file or stream here. Test the chosen workload while monitoring CPU, memory, dropped frames, and network throughput before depending on it for a scheduled broadcast.

3. Give the instance outbound internet access
The encoder must reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint. AWS documents two common network patterns:

Keep inbound administration access narrow. AWS warns against allowing SSH or RDP from everywhere; restrict administrative access to known source addresses or use an appropriate managed access method. The media feed is outbound from the encoder, so do not open an unnecessary inbound media port. 4. Install and configure the encoder
Install an encoder build that can read the source file and produce settings accepted by YouTube. Provide the Live Control Room server URL and stream key, then configure output to match the source and the channel’s intended quality. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps according to its encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
No particular FFmpeg command is validated by the cited sources. A safe command cannot be specified without knowing the input’s codecs, duration and looping needs, desired output format, installed FFmpeg build, and whether you need stream copy or transcoding. Use the parameters below to configure your encoder, and test the exact command with your own file before scheduling a broadcast. If your encoder exposes a keyframe interval in frames rather than seconds, convert according to the output frame rate and verify the resulting interval.

Use YouTube’s current baseline settings
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends it as the encrypted form of RTMP.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Match the source where practical rather than increasing frame rate without a reason.
- SDR color: YouTube’s guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth for SDR.
- Audio: YouTube recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, its recommendation is AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
For SDR H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations include these example video bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed requirements. Select a bitrate appropriate to the source and confirm the server can sustain it. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the stream bitrate; allow for other traffic and avoid relying on a connection whose measured capacity only just meets the target.

5. Start the feed, verify it, and go live
- Start the encoder and confirm it is reading the intended prerecorded file and sending to the correct stream URL with the correct key.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Check that the video is not blank or frozen, audio is present and in sync, and the chosen resolution and frame rate are being delivered as intended.
- When the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room if the stream is scheduled or awaiting manual start.
- Keep the encoder and its network connection running for the broadcast. Monitor both YouTube’s stream health and the EC2 host for encoder errors, resource saturation, or connectivity loss.
- To finish, stop the encoder’s output and end the YouTube stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams.
Copyright and reused-content checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to stream the video and its audio. A prerecorded file does not bypass YouTube’s copyright enforcement. Also consider whether the channel’s content complies with YouTube’s applicable policies on reused content and monetization; a live broadcast does not by itself establish eligibility. Check the current rules in YouTube Studio and YouTube Help before using music, clips, or material created by someone else.

- YouTube does not receive a feed: Confirm the encoder is using the correct stream URL and key, the channel is eligible to stream, DNS works, and the instance has outbound routing and egress access to the ingest endpoint.
- The preview is not ready or shows poor health: Check encoder logs and the EC2 host’s CPU and network use. Reduce the output bitrate or encoding workload if the instance or uplink cannot sustain it; confirm the frame rate, codec, CBR, and keyframe interval follow YouTube guidance.
- Video arrives but audio is missing or distorted: Inspect the source’s audio track and encoder mapping, then check the output codec, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate against the intended stereo or 5.1 configuration.
- Stream disconnects: Check outbound connectivity, subnet routing, NAT or internet gateway health, and restrictive security-group, network ACL, or egress policies. Verify that the instance is not exhausting compute resources. YouTube’s live encoder workflow can be restarted with the same stream configuration unless the key has been reset.
- Key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, update the encoder’s secret configuration, and restart the feed with the replacement key.
Cost and operational trade-offs
EC2 charges depend on the instance, storage, region, and how long resources run; network and NAT charges may also apply. The cited AWS and YouTube pages do not provide a cost estimate for this particular workload. Calculate the current AWS costs for your selected configuration before leaving an instance running continuously. A self-managed EC2 setup gives control over the host and encoder, but you are responsible for provisioning, network security, updates, monitoring, and recovery.
