An AWS Lightsail VPS can run software that reads a prerecorded video and sends it to YouTube Live as an encoder stream. The VPS must stay running, and the software must keep sending a valid stream; uploading a file to YouTube is a separate process. This guide explains the setup and checks, while treating any command or instance choice as something to validate on your workload—not a tested or AWS-certified recipe.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must meet its stated minimum age requirement of 16.
- A Lightsail Linux/Unix instance with enough CPU, memory, storage, and sustained upload capacity for your video and encoding approach.
- A prerecorded file accessible to the instance and an encoder/player workflow capable of sending it continuously as a live output.
- A YouTube Live event and its ingest endpoint and stream key. Treat the key like a password.
Check current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling. General live access requirements do not settle every policy question about prerecorded programming; follow current YouTube policies for your content and disclose or label it where YouTube’s rules or viewer expectations require.

How to stream a prerecorded video on YouTube Live
1. Create the YouTube event and retrieve its stream details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the event, then select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the primary ingest URL and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key private; do not paste it into a public script, screenshot, or support post.
- Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. The RTMPS connection uses port 443, TLS, and a matching TLS server-name indication (SNI) hostname; preserve the full URL and application path YouTube supplies rather than guessing or editing them.
YouTube’s RTMPS ingest documentation describes the endpoint requirements. If using the YouTube Live Streaming API, its LiveStreams resource exposes RTMP and RTMPS primary ingestion addresses and may include backup addresses.
2. Launch a Lightsail instance and assess its capacity
- In the AWS Lightsail console, create a Linux/Unix instance in the region appropriate for your needs. Choose a plan based on measured workload, not only on the video resolution.
- Make the video file available on the VPS and confirm there is sufficient disk space. Check CPU and memory headroom while the encoder runs, plus sustained outbound throughput.
- Distinguish a compatible file that can be copied or remuxed from one that must be transcoded in real time. Transcoding can require substantially more CPU. AWS’s published plan specifications do not establish which bundle will handle a given resolution or encoding workload; validate your own source and settings.
Lightsail bundles combine compute, memory, storage, and a data-transfer allowance. For example, the official table accessed October 3, 2026 listed a Nano Linux plan with public IPv4 at $5 per month, 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. These figures and allowances can vary or change, so check the current Lightsail pricing table for your region and plan before deciding.

3. Keep the firewall narrow
The instance needs an outbound connection to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest server on port 443. This setup does not require opening an inbound RTMP port: the VPS initiates the stream connection. In Lightsail’s networking settings, allow only the inbound services you actually use, and restrict SSH access to trusted source IP ranges where practical. Review IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately because they are separate policies. Lightsail allows outbound traffic by default according to its firewall documentation.
A static IPv4 address is not inherently needed for the outbound YouTube connection. Consider one only if another workflow or service needs a stable address; Lightsail notes that the default public IPv4 address can change when an instance is stopped and started. See Lightsail static IP documentation.

4. Configure the encoder for the source and YouTube
Install or configure a player/encoder on the VPS to read the file and send video and audio to the event’s ingest URL with its stream key. The exact command depends on the file’s codecs, desired output, software version, and whether you are copying compatible streams or transcoding. The official pages cited here do not prescribe a particular FFmpeg command, looping flag, playlist scheduler, or Linux distribution, so treat commands found elsewhere as examples to validate—not as a guaranteed Lightsail setup.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a maximum frame rate of 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Match the source’s aspect ratio and frame rate where appropriate, and choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the target resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate suitable for every stream. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers.

If the intended program is continuous, configure the player or scheduler to continue with the next video or repeat material as appropriate. Do not assume that reaching the end of one file will automatically keep a broadcast going; looping behavior depends on the software you choose.
5. Test before the intended broadcast
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming signal to appear in Live Control Room.
- Use a private or unlisted test if suitable. Preview the picture and listen to the audio; check motion, synchronization, aspect ratio, and whether the video ends unexpectedly.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health notices and the VPS’s CPU, memory, disk, and network use during the test.
- For a scheduled event, start setup ahead of time and keep monitoring the encoder and YouTube preview once live.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend advance setup, previewing the incoming signal, and monitoring stream health and audio/video.

How much bandwidth and capacity does it use?
Estimate the stream’s transfer
A rough outbound data estimate is the encoded bitrate multiplied by the broadcast duration. Convert bits to bytes by dividing by eight, then allow additional headroom for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and any other outbound traffic. For example, a 6 Mbps video stream sends roughly 2.7 GB of video payload per hour before overhead (6 megabits/second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000, or about 2.7 decimal GB). Use the actual total bitrate, including audio, for a closer estimate.
Lightsail counts inbound and outbound traffic toward the plan transfer allowance. Qualifying excess outbound transfer to the internet/public IP can incur region-dependent charges after the included allowance. AWS’s FAQ accessed October 3, 2026 lists $0.09/GB in US East (Ohio and N. Virginia) and US West (Oregon); confirm the current rate and rules for your region in the Lightsail FAQ and pricing page before budgeting. Do not assume that the example rate applies worldwide.

Choose compute for the encoding job, not just resolution
Resolution alone is not a reliable Lightsail sizing rule. A VPS that passes through compatible streams may have a different workload from one encoding every frame in real time. Run a sustained test with the actual file and settings, observe CPU and memory use, and leave room for spikes and recovery. No official benchmark cited here certifies a specific Lightsail size for a given resolution.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Wrong ingest URL or key, encoder not running, or RTMPS connection setup is incorrect. | Copy the event’s current endpoint and key again; confirm the RTMPS URL path, port 443, TLS, and SNI hostname. Check the encoder log and outbound network access. |
| Connection fails at the network layer | Outbound access is blocked, or the encoder is attempting the wrong port/protocol. | For RTMPS, the VPS connects outward to YouTube on port 443. An inbound RTMP rule is not a fix for this path. Check host-level rules as well as Lightsail networking. |
| Stream starts but drops or buffers | Insufficient sustained upload capacity, unstable source connectivity, or encoding load saturating the VPS. | Observe network throughput and CPU during a sustained test; reduce output load or use a better-suited plan or network path if measurements show a bottleneck. |
| Video is choppy or the instance is overloaded | Real-time transcoding exceeds available CPU, or settings do not suit the source and instance. | Check utilization and encoder output; where possible use a compatible source workflow that avoids unnecessary transcoding, or validate on a higher-capacity plan. |
| Broadcast ends when the file finishes | The player is configured to play only one pass. | Configure and test looping or playlist scheduling in the selected software. YouTube does not make a single-file encoder workflow repeat automatically. |
| SSH access is exposed more broadly than intended | Inbound administration rules allow connections from unrestricted addresses. | Limit SSH source ranges and review IPv4 and IPv6 rules separately. Do not open ports unrelated to the workflow. |
