You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Amazon Lightsail instance in Mumbai by running an encoder on the instance and sending its output to the YouTube event’s ingest URL with the event’s stream key. For a scheduled event, start the encoder, confirm the preview appears in YouTube Studio, then select Go live. The Lightsail instance is the encoder host; viewers watch the resulting event on YouTube.
Before you set up Lightsail, check YouTube eligibility
Confirm the channel can go live before moving files or configuring the server. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and that the user be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live. Create a stream or select the scheduled event you intend to use.
- Copy the event’s ingest server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key authenticates it. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes this workflow.
- Keep the key private: treat it like a password, not as a public stream link. If you suspect it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube explains stream-key and encoder settings in its Live Control Room settings guidance.
Prepare the Mumbai Lightsail instance
- Connect to your Linux or Unix instance over SSH. Install an encoder that is available for the instance’s operating system and release. Amazon says software can be installed on Lightsail instances, but package names and commands vary by distribution; consult the Lightsail instance documentation for instance access and platform details.
- Place the video on the instance, or make it accessible to the encoder through storage the instance can read. Check that the file plays correctly and that its audio is present before the live event.
- Choose an instance based on an actual test with your video, not just its location. Encoding demands depend on codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and hardware acceleration. AWS describes Lightsail bundles as fixed amounts of vCPU, memory, SSD storage, and transfer, and recommends EC2 for consistently high-CPU applications such as video encoding. Review the Lightsail FAQ and monitor CPU and stream health while testing.
The research-backed workflow is to use an encoder such as FFmpeg to read a media input and publish to the YouTube ingest URL and key. FFmpeg supports this general input-to-output model, but exact install commands and an end-to-end command for a specific Lightsail distribution and file have not been established here. Follow the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build and verify its options rather than treating an untested command as universal. See FFmpeg documentation.

Configure the encoder with the event’s ingest URL and key. Prefer RTMPS when supported by the encoder and ingest endpoint. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings include H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.

Use a resolution and frame rate that make sense for the source, while ensuring the instance can encode continuously and the network can sustain the output. YouTube lists 10 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. The video bitrate is not the whole outbound load: audio and other stream overhead also use bandwidth. YouTube recommends upload-bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate. Its encoding guidance and streaming tips provide settings and network advice.
- If CPU use remains high or the stream drops frames, test a lower resolution or frame rate, reduce bitrate or processing filters, or move to more suitable compute.
- If the available outbound bandwidth is unstable, lower the total stream bitrate and leave headroom instead of targeting the full measured connection rate.
- Match the output to the actual file and intended event; do not assume every Lightsail bundle can sustain 1080p or any other particular workload.
Start the stream, verify the preview, and end the event
- Start the encoder on the Lightsail instance. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming stream and inspect the preview for moving video and audible sound.
- For a scheduled event, select Go live after the preview is ready. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not by itself replace the scheduled event’s Live Control Room action.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and playback during the event. When finished, stop the encoder and end the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder workflow guidance.
Lightsail firewall: do you need to open a port?
For this publishing flow, the instance initiates an outbound connection to YouTube. A public inbound RTMP port is ordinarily unnecessary. AWS says Lightsail firewalls filter connections arriving at the instance’s public IP and do not control outbound traffic; outbound traffic is allowed by default. See Control instance traffic with firewalls in Lightsail.

Do not expose SSH to every source address if you can restrict access to the addresses you use. Lightsail’s IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules are independent, so check each address family if you manage inbound access.

Lightsail or EC2 for a persistent encoder?
Lightsail offers a simpler fixed bundle of compute, storage, and transfer allowance. EC2 gives more workload control and is the AWS option its FAQ recommends for consistently high-CPU applications such as video encoding. The right choice depends on measured CPU use, sustained outbound throughput, and the instance or service configuration you need; no Mumbai-specific performance result or exact cost follows from the facts above. Compare them by testing your actual file and desired stream settings rather than assuming a particular plan will work.

Common problems and practical fixes
- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Check that the encoder is running, the correct event’s ingest URL and key are entered, and the instance has outbound connectivity. If the key may be wrong or exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
- Preview appears, but video or sound is missing: Check the selected media input and encoder audio/video outputs, then verify both motion and sound in the preview before going live.
- The stream stutters or loses frames: Check CPU load and outbound bandwidth. Reduce demanding settings or filters, lower the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- The event is not public despite an active encoder: For a scheduled stream, confirm the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.
- You are considering an inbound firewall rule: This workflow publishes outbound from Lightsail; opening an inbound RTMP port is ordinarily not the fix. Check the instance’s outbound connection and encoder configuration instead.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
A prerecorded video still needs to comply with YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming rules. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or permissions for the video, music, and other material, and check the channel’s eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that repeating or republishing material is automatically allowed simply because it is prerecorded or streamed from your own server.
