First confirm your channel can livestream, then test the full path before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast. The steps below work with a VPS that has enough sustained upload bandwidth and, if you transcode, enough CPU; no specific Contabo plan can be recommended without checking its current specifications and measuring its performance.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A Contabo VPS you can access, with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream bitrate. If FFmpeg must encode or resize the video, the VPS also needs enough CPU for that workload.
- The prerecorded video file, stored on the VPS or otherwise accessible to it.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS and the YouTube stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
This is an encoder workflow, not a YouTube video upload: FFmpeg reads the file and sends a live feed to YouTube. The stream key authorizes the encoder, so treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, article, or shell transcript.

1. Enable YouTube Live and get the stream destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream. Set its title, privacy, and schedule as needed.
- In the stream settings, copy the encoder stream URL and stream key. Use the exact endpoint YouTube displays; do not assume an ingest host or path.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder that uses it. See YouTube’s stream settings and key guidance.
For an initial test, use an unlisted stream if that suits your channel and the event settings. A scheduled stream may require you to start the event in Live Control Room after the incoming encoder feed appears.
2. Put the video on the VPS and inspect it
Upload the file using your usual secure transfer method, or make it available at a path the VPS can read. Then inspect its video resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and audio tracks before choosing whether to copy the existing streams or transcode them. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains input and output options; their order matters because options generally apply to the next input or output: FFmpeg command-line documentation.

A file already in a YouTube-compatible format may be sent without re-encoding, provided its settings suit the stream you intend to deliver. If you need to change codec, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, FFmpeg must encode the video, which increases CPU demand. Test the actual file on the actual VPS rather than assuming a plan name guarantees transcoding capacity.
3. Choose settings the VPS and YouTube can sustain
Protocol, codecs, and keyframes
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS; it specifically recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. The current YouTube encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video ingest codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the precise combination you plan to use.

As current H.264 recommendations from YouTube, 1080p30 is 14 Mbps, 1080p60 is 17 Mbps, 720p30 is 8 Mbps, and 720p60 is 8 Mbps. These are examples for those specific codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations—not universal settings. Consult YouTube’s table for other combinations.

YouTube advises that the stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That means a stream set to 14 Mbps needs at least 17.5 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity to preserve 20% headroom (14 ÷ 0.8). This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee that a VPS connection will sustain that rate. Measure performance over time and account for other outbound traffic. YouTube’s streaming tips explain its bandwidth guidance.
Check the Contabo plan rather than guessing
The available evidence does not establish which Contabo plan, region, or network configuration is suitable. Before choosing or relying on a plan, check its current sustained outbound performance, included traffic and overage terms, CPU capacity if encoding, network location, and reliability terms. Provider headline specifications alone do not prove that the VPS can sustain a particular stream for its full duration.
4. Start FFmpeg and verify the feed
This illustrative command loops a file, encodes it as H.264 and AAC, and sends it over RTMPS. It is a starting template, not a tested command for every source file, FFmpeg build, or VPS. Replace the path and endpoint with your actual values; keep the real key private.

-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'-rereads the file at native speed (equivalent to-readrate 1), so FFmpeg does not send a prerecorded file as fast as the VPS can read it. It is useful when output needs to flow in real time.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Remove or change it if the event should end with the file.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio. The example’s 4,500 kbps video rate is not a YouTube recommendation for every format; choose settings from YouTube’s current table and your measured VPS capacity.-r 30sets the output frame rate and-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which is a two-second interval at 30 fps. Adjust the GOP if you change frame rate so the keyframe interval remains appropriate.-f flvselects the container commonly used for RTMP-family output. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS support in its protocol documentation; available protocol support can depend on the FFmpeg build.
Run the command with the actual YouTube endpoint format shown in Live Control Room. Avoid placing the real key in a world-readable script or a command history that others can access. Use an appropriately protected secret or environment mechanism for unattended operation, and restrict access to the VPS account and files.
- Start with a test stream, ideally unlisted, and run FFmpeg.
- Wait for the incoming stream preview in Live Control Room. Check the picture, audio, and stream-health indicators.
- If the stream is scheduled for manual start, start the event from Live Control Room once the feed is ready.
- Monitor the stream during the test and confirm that it stays healthy at the target quality before scheduling an important broadcast.
- When finished, end the YouTube event and stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for longer streams.
5. Copyright, reused content, and stream duration
Having a file available to stream does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it. Confirm you have the necessary rights for the video, music, and any other included material before sending it to YouTube. Livestreams remain subject to YouTube’s policies and enforcement; a technical test is not a copyright clearance or a guarantee that a stream will remain available. For ongoing streams, also consider whether the channel’s use of prerecorded material is original and complies with YouTube’s applicable monetization and reused-content policies.
For recordings that need to be archived automatically, YouTube’s stated threshold is streams under 12 hours. Plan a shorter event if that archive behavior matters, and verify the resulting archive in Studio.

Troubleshooting the common failures
No preview appears in Live Control Room
- Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that you selected the intended event.
- Confirm the URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room. A stale or mistyped key prevents YouTube from accepting the feed.
- Check FFmpeg output for connection, authentication, or protocol errors; confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected RTMPS protocol.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports poor health
- Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the VPS can sustain, then retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
- Check sustained outbound bandwidth and other network traffic, not just a brief speed-test result. Also verify current provider traffic limits and overage terms.
- If transcoding, inspect CPU load. A preset or output setting too demanding for the VPS can cause encoding lag; test a less demanding encode or use compatible source streams without re-encoding where practical.
Picture works but audio is missing or wrong
- Inspect the source for audio tracks and select the intended track. Confirm FFmpeg is mapping and encoding audio as expected.
- Check that the output audio codec is supported by YouTube and that FFmpeg reports no audio encoder or input errors.
The stream stops when the file ends
Use -stream_loop -1 to repeat the file continuously, or set a finite loop count for a planned number of plays. Remember that a loop repeats the same material; it does not create new content.
The stream key may have leaked
Reset the key in YouTube Studio, update the FFmpeg destination, and remove or secure exposed copies in scripts, logs, and shell history. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to that stream.
