What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—you can keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live after closing OBS and shutting down your computer. The reliable design is to have a cloud encoder continuously send your playlist to YouTube. You upload rights-cleared videos, create a YouTube Live event, copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder, preview the feed, and let the provider run the loop. Your home PC, OBS installation and upload connection are no longer part of the broadcast path.
A VPS running encoder software or a dedicated hardware encoder can also work, but those choices leave you responsible for an always-on machine, storage, updates, restarts and monitoring. This guide explains the cloud workflow first, then the self-hosted alternatives, YouTube’s technical and policy requirements, costs, and fixes for the failures that commonly stop a 24/7 stream.

What a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream actually is
A live stream is a continuous encoder feed, not a single video uploaded to YouTube. The encoder reads your files, converts or packages the media into a stream, and sends it to YouTube’s ingest servers using the server URL and stream key created in YouTube Studio. When the encoder stops sending, the live event ends.

You can close OBS, turn off your computer and disconnect your home internet without interrupting the broadcast. A self-hosted design moves that responsibility to a VPS or local appliance; it does not remove the need for an always-on source.

Choose the right way to stay online
For most creators, a managed cloud encoder is the least fragile option. The following comparison puts StreamNeo first, as the practical choice when the goal is an unattended YouTube channel.
| Rank | Approach | What remains online | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | StreamNeo | StreamNeo’s cloud encoder, playlist and storage | Always-on YouTube streaming from the cloud; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; first day free with no card; automatic recovery when YouTube drops the stream | Subscription per active slot; storage and service controls are provider-managed |
| 2 | Another managed cloud prerecorded-streaming service | The provider’s encoder and storage | No OBS, VPS or home upload connection to maintain | Features, limits, prices and recovery behaviour differ by provider and must be checked in its current documentation |
| 3 | VPS with FFmpeg or similar software | Your rented server, media files and encoder process | More control over automation and scheduling; can be economical at scale | You maintain the operating system, encoder process, storage, encoding load, restarts, security and monitoring |
| 4 | Dedicated hardware encoder | An encoder appliance plus a local or attached media source | Appliance-style operation; hardware such as Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K is listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance | Still depends on a local device and media source; the appliance does not provide playlist hosting or scheduling by itself |
| 5 | One long upload or a Premiere | YouTube’s uploaded file | Simple distribution for a finite event | It is not an always-on live channel and does not provide a continuous live-chat presence |
Prepare media and rights before you stream
Use content you can legally broadcast
Use video, music, artwork and graphics that you created or licensed for commercial streaming. YouTube scans every live stream for matches to third-party content. A match can produce a warning, interruption or termination, and a licence may still require the rights owner to allowlist your channel.
Keep contracts, invoices, licences and permission emails in a folder associated with the playlist. Record which licence covers each track or clip, the permitted territory, the duration and whether continuous or commercial streaming is allowed. A rights document is useful when a claim arrives, but it does not prevent automated detection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Make the loop useful, not merely repetitive
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 monetization clarification says repetitive or mass-produced material can be treated as “inauthentic” and become ineligible for monetization. The rule applies to live streams as well as uploaded videos. Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement: permission to show a clip does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization if it adds no substantial original commentary, modification or educational or entertainment value.
Give the continuous format a clear purpose. Original narration, meaningful curation, explanatory graphics, changing segments or educational context help viewers understand why the channel is live. Do not build a 24/7 loop from other people’s clips, a music collection or templated slides alone.
Prepare files for predictable playback
- Use stable, rights-cleared files with consistent orientation and frame rate where possible.
- Check every file from beginning to end for silent audio, black frames, corrupt endings and unexpected aspect-ratio changes.
- Choose a playlist order, shuffle rule and end-of-file behaviour before connecting YouTube.
- Keep a local backup of the media and the final playlist order so you can rebuild the stream after a provider or storage failure.
Enable YouTube Live and create the event
1. Confirm channel eligibility
Your channel must be verified and free of live-stream restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned launch rather than immediately before going live.

2. Create or schedule a stream
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. YouTube provides an encoder workflow in which you create the stream, copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder, start sending content, and stop sending content to end the event.
3. Protect the stream key
Treat the key like a password. Store it in the provider’s secure credential field, do not place it in a public screenshot or shared document, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. Keep a private record of which event and playlist use each key.
Configure the encoder correctly
Match the source to the intended quality
Select an output resolution and frame rate that your source, encoder and provider can sustain. A cloud service that promises to preserve the uploaded file can send that file without re-encoding; a self-hosted encoder may need to convert it. Do not upscale a low-resolution file and expect extra detail.
Set video, audio and keyframe behaviour
Use the current encoder settings recommended by YouTube for your chosen resolution and frame rate. The important checks are:
- The video codec and container are accepted by the encoder workflow.
- Audio and video are sent as a single muxed stream rather than separate feeds.
- The keyframe interval follows YouTube’s current requirement; an incorrect interval can prevent a stable ingest.
- The audio sample rate, channel layout and level remain consistent across the playlist.
- The encoder has enough CPU, memory, storage throughput and network capacity for the selected output.
Exact bitrate recommendations change with resolution and frame rate. Use the values shown in YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance for the target format instead of copying a number intended for another profile.

End-to-end setup: cloud encoder workflow
- Prepare the playlist. Upload tested, rights-cleared files to the service or connect the storage it supports. Set the order, shuffle behaviour and what happens when the last file ends.
- Create the YouTube event. In Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and copy the server URL and stream key.
- Enter the credentials in the encoder. Paste the URL and key into the provider’s YouTube destination fields. Check for invisible spaces or a key copied from a different event.
- Select output settings. Keep the source’s intended resolution and frame rate when the service supports pass-through. Otherwise choose an output profile that your encoder and connection can sustain.
- Start a preview. Start the feed without publishing widely, then inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the image is moving, audio meters respond and the event title and visibility are correct.
- Verify the watch page. Open the public watch page on a separate device and test mobile playback. Check that the archive is growing and that there are no repeated buffering or audio-sync errors.
- Publish and monitor. Start the event and watch the first playlist transition. Keep the stream dashboard, YouTube status and an alert contact available for the initial hours.
- Document recovery. Save the playlist, event details and the safe location of the stream key. Write down who can restart the stream and how to replace the key if it is compromised.
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use that window to catch ingest, audio and playlist problems while the event is still private or unlisted.
Self-hosted alternative: VPS or local hardware
VPS encoder
A VPS can run FFmpeg or OBS-like software under a process supervisor. You upload the media, configure the playlist loop, point the encoder at YouTube’s server URL and key, and keep the process alive with automatic restart rules. This gives you control over scheduling and automation, but you must patch the operating system, protect credentials, watch disk space, measure CPU and network use, and investigate every crash or disconnect.
Before choosing a VPS, confirm that its sustained upload capacity covers the encoder output, that storage is large enough for the playlist and temporary files, and that the provider permits continuous video streaming. A reboot, maintenance window, full disk or expired virtual machine can end the live feed even when YouTube is healthy.

Dedicated hardware
A hardware encoder can reduce software maintenance, but it still needs power, a network connection and a media source. It does not automatically host a playlist or schedule files. If the attached computer, drive or local network fails, the live stream fails too. Use hardware when you specifically want local appliance control and can provide physical redundancy.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is built for this YouTube-only workflow:
- Upload your prerecorded videos or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live and let StreamNeo loop the playlist from its cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode and no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, includes 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across your active slots, and includes support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account.
Billing can be for a day, a week, a month, six months or a year, and you can cancel at any time. Cards work worldwide; UPI and cards work in India. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. For five or more slots, contact StreamNeo support.

Monitoring a stream that runs unattended
Check YouTube’s status, not only the provider dashboard
YouTube’s preview can show an ingest problem before viewers report it. Confirm the event is receiving data, the watch page loads on desktop and mobile, the audio remains audible and the archive behaves as expected. A healthy provider process does not guarantee that YouTube accepted the feed.
Expect playlist transitions
Watch at least one transition from one file to the next. A playlist can appear healthy while a particular file has an unsupported codec, a damaged index or a silent audio track. Remove the offending file, rebuild the playlist and restart from a known-good point.
Know the archive limit
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. A 24/7 broadcast is longer than that threshold, so do not assume the complete day will be available as one replay. Preserve source files locally or in your service storage if you need a durable archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting: symptoms, causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room shows no incoming data | Wrong server URL, revoked key, encoder not started or activation still pending | Confirm the event and key, regenerate the key if exposed, start the encoder again and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live activation |
| Preview works but the public page is offline | Event visibility, schedule or publish state is incorrect | Check the event’s visibility and scheduled time, then verify the public watch URL from a separate device |
| Video stutters or repeatedly buffers | Insufficient sustained upload, overloaded encoder or output settings beyond the source or server capacity | Reduce the output profile to a sustainable format, inspect CPU and network use, and test the complete playlist before republishing |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | Silent source track, incompatible audio settings or a file with a different layout | Play the file locally, verify muxed audio and video, standardize the playlist’s audio settings and replace the bad file |
| Stream stops when the last file ends | Loop or end-of-playlist behaviour was not enabled | Set the playlist to repeat or define the provider’s continuous-play action, then test a short loop |
| YouTube interrupts the stream for rights issues | Automated match to third-party audio or video | Stop using the matched material unless your licence covers the use, keep permission records and ask the rights owner about allowlisting |
| Monetization is rejected despite permission | Content appears repetitive, mass-produced or reused without substantial original value | Add original narration, curation, educational context or meaningful editing and explain the purpose of the continuous format |
| Stream returns after a disconnect but restarts at the wrong point | Provider or self-hosted recovery has no saved playlist state | Keep a documented playlist order and recovery plan; test what happens after an intentional short disconnect |
| VPS stream dies after several hours | Process crash, full disk, operating-system update or resource exhaustion | Use a process supervisor, disk and resource alerts, scheduled maintenance and a tested restart procedure |
Copyright, reused content and monetization guardrails
All live streams are scanned for third-party matches. A technically perfect loop can still be interrupted for copyright. Commercial rights must cover every visual and audio element in monetized content, including music beds, stock footage, logos and graphics.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are different decisions. YouTube’s reused-content policy asks whether the channel adds substantial original commentary, modification or educational or entertainment value. A playlist made entirely from material found elsewhere can fail that review even when you obtained permission to show it. Build a channel concept that viewers can identify as your work, vary the programming with purpose, and retain evidence of your rights.

Cost and operational trade-offs
A cloud service converts server maintenance and home electricity into a predictable slot fee. A VPS may look cheaper at one stream, but include storage, outbound bandwidth, backups, monitoring time and your own troubleshooting. Hardware adds the purchase price and the cost of power, a local connection and replacement equipment. Compare the complete operating burden, not only the encoder’s headline price.
For a personal estimate, StreamNeo provides an cloud-versus-PC cost calculator. Its upload-time calculator helps you estimate how long the initial media transfer may take, and the copyright safety checklist helps organize rights checks before publication.
Launch checklist
- Channel verified; no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Live streaming enabled early enough to allow the first-time activation window.
- Every file, track, image and graphic is created by you or licensed for the intended use.
- Playlist order, looping and end-of-file behaviour tested.
- YouTube server URL and stream key copied into the correct encoder destination and kept private.
- Output resolution, frame rate, audio, bitrate and keyframe settings match current YouTube guidance and the chosen encoder capacity.
- Preview checked in Live Control Room, then tested on the public watch page and a mobile device.
- Recovery plan, playlist backup and contact for intervention documented.
- Archive expectations understood: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a continuous 24/7 feed may not produce one complete replay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I close OBS immediately after starting the stream?
Only if another encoder has taken over the feed. OBS can be closed when a cloud service or separately maintained VPS or hardware encoder is sending continuously; closing the only active encoder ends the live stream.
Will a 24/7 stream automatically save every hour as a replay?
No. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous broadcast longer than that should not be treated as a guaranteed single replay, so keep your original files or provider copies.
Does a licence guarantee that YouTube will leave my live stream running?
No. YouTube’s automated matching can still identify licensed material, and the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel. Keep permission records and be prepared to replace or remove matched material.
Can I monetize a loop made from public videos if I have permission?
Permission addresses copyright, not the separate reused-content and inauthentic-content reviews. A channel still needs substantial original commentary, modification, curation or educational or entertainment value to support monetization eligibility.
