For a phone-only setup, you need an Android encoder app that explicitly supports playing and looping a local video file and sending it to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube documents its encoder connection, but it does not guarantee that any particular app will loop a file, keep running with the screen off, or recover unattended for 24 hours. Test the app on your actual phone and connection before relying on it.
If you need a continuous broadcast rather than a phone-dependent DIY setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube. Details are below.

What you need to know before setting up a 24/7 stream
YouTube documents two different workflows: mobile live streaming, intended for creating a mobile broadcast, and encoder streaming, which connects an encoder to YouTube with a stream URL and key. Its standard mobile-live instructions do not document selecting a saved gallery video and looping it. A phone can still be the encoder, but the app—not YouTube’s mobile-live screen—must provide local-file playback and looping.

There is also an important difference between keeping a public broadcast running and getting a complete recording of it. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a full archive matters, plan separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local copy where practical; ending before that threshold is not a guarantee of an intact archive.

| Route | Prerecorded file and looping | What stays running | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube app mobile live | Local-file looping is not documented in the standard mobile-live workflow. | The mobile broadcast depends on the phone. | YouTube documents a native mobile-live workflow, not a saved-video loop. |
| Android encoder app | Only if that app explicitly supports local-file playback and looping. | The phone, app, power and network must remain available. | YouTube documents encoder ingest, but app-specific looping, background operation and recovery must be verified with the app maker and tested on your device. |
| Cloud playback | Depends on the service. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube. | The service runs playback in the cloud instead of relying on your home phone. | StreamNeo-specific details and pricing are below. |
YouTube’s encoder page names Larix Broadcaster among mobile encoder options; that mention establishes encoder availability only, not local-file looping or 24/7 unattended operation. Before choosing any phone app, confirm its current documentation or listing explicitly covers local video playback, repeat/loop, RTMP or RTMPS output, and operation under your intended screen-off and power settings.

Set up a prerecorded-video stream from an Android phone
1. Prepare the video and phone
- Use a video you own or are authorized to broadcast. Check that the app can access the file and can repeat it without stopping at the end.
- Connect the phone to a reliable power source and a stable network. A long stream consumes substantial data, and performance depends on your carrier, location, plan, signal and bitrate; there is no single India-wide upload-speed or cost figure.
- Check the phone’s battery, heat and app power-management behavior. Android may restrict background activity, and behavior varies by device and software version. Test the intended screen-off arrangement rather than assuming it will work.
- Decide whether you need one continuous public broadcast, an archived recording, or both. For an archive, plan sessions under 12 hours and keep a local backup if feasible.
2. Create the YouTube live event and copy its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. In the encoder app, enter them in its server/stream URL and key fields. Labels vary by app.
- Treat the stream key like a credential. Do not show it in screenshots or share it with an untrusted app or person. If exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings before broadcasting again. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Use YouTube’s supplied connection details rather than constructing a low-level address yourself. Where the encoder offers a choice, prefer RTMPS. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; its technical guidance specifies a valid YouTube ingestion URL, port 443 and correct TLS hostname/SNI handling. These connection details matter especially when diagnosing a secure-ingest failure. Read Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
3. Configure playback and encoder quality
- Select the local video file in the app and enable its repeat or loop option. Confirm that the app returns to the beginning instead of ending the broadcast when playback finishes.
- Choose a resolution and bitrate your sustained upload can support. For H.264, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of an Indian carrier or a specific handset.
- Use the app’s YouTube-compatible encoder settings. If configurable, follow YouTube’s current recommended settings for codec, frame rate, keyframe interval and audio rather than assuming defaults are appropriate. The recommended bitrate values above are only starting points; an unstable connection may require a lower setting.
- Check framing and audio, including whether sound is intended and remains in sync across the loop. Keep the stream title, visibility and audience settings accurate for the content.
Consult YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance; test the chosen settings on your actual network before a long session.

4. Preview, then start the broadcast
- Start the encoder app and wait for YouTube to receive the feed.
- Preview the incoming stream in Live Control Room. Confirm video, sound, loop behavior and stream health before making the event public.
- Follow the prompts shown for your event in Live Control Room to start the scheduled broadcast. Starting the encoder and starting the YouTube event can be separate actions.
- Keep monitoring stream health and the phone during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing beforehand, previewing and monitoring; its documentation does not promise that an Android app will reconnect unattended after a dropped connection.
See YouTube’s streaming tips for testing and monitoring advice.
5. Test unattended operation before attempting 24/7
Run a short trial on the exact phone, Android version, app and network you intend to use. Check that the file loops cleanly, audio stays synchronized, the app survives the screen-off and power settings you plan to use, the phone does not overheat, and a brief network interruption does not leave the broadcast dead. YouTube’s encoder instructions cannot verify these handset- and app-specific behaviors. Do not schedule a day-long broadcast until the trial has passed.

Copyright, live interruptions and archive limits
Use material you have rights to stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder, interruption or termination. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID; licensed content can still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording is important, stop and restart the live event before it exceeds 12 hours and retain the original video or another local recording where storage permits. This reduces dependence on the live archive but does not guarantee a particular session will be saved intact. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common phone-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube’s standard mobile screen shows the camera, not a saved video loop. | The native mobile-live flow is not documented as a local-file looping player. | Use an encoder app only if its current documentation confirms local playback, looping and RTMP(S) output. |
| YouTube does not receive a signal. | Incorrect stream URL or key, disabled live access, network failure, or unsupported connection settings. | Confirm live streaming is enabled, re-copy the event URL/key, verify the phone’s connection and use the supplied YouTube address. If using RTMPS, check the app’s secure-ingest support. |
| The feed arrives but the event does not go live. | The encoder feed and the Live Control Room event may require separate start actions. | Wait for the preview, then follow the event’s on-screen start prompts in Live Control Room. |
| Video buffers, drops frames or loses connection. | The sustained upload may not support the selected bitrate, or the signal may fluctuate. | Run a sustained test, reduce resolution or bitrate, choose a steadier connection and monitor stream health. YouTube’s H.264 starting recommendations are 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 5 Mbps at 1080p30, not guaranteed minimums for every connection. |
| Playback stops at the end of the file. | The encoder app may not have loop enabled or may not support looping a local file. | Verify the app’s loop setting and test through a complete cycle before going live. If the app lacks the feature, use a different verified route. |
| The stream stops when the display turns off or after a while. | Device power management, app background limits, heat or battery behavior can stop the encoder. | Test screen-off operation, app battery settings, cooling and power on the target phone; device-specific behavior is not guaranteed by YouTube. |
| The stream is interrupted for a rights match. | YouTube detected third-party content, even if you believe it is licensed. | Use authorized content and, for licensed material, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID. |
| The 24-hour broadcast has no complete replay. | YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. | For an archive, split the broadcast into shorter sessions and retain a local copy where feasible. |
