You can send a prerecorded video to a scheduled YouTube live event by creating the event in YouTube Studio, loading its stream URL and key into an encoder or streaming service, and starting the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive a preview. For a scheduled event, the encoder starting is not the final step: once the preview appears in Live Control Room, click Go live. Scheduling creates a shareable upcoming page, but it does not establish that one event can run indefinitely; YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
What “continuous” means for a scheduled event
A scheduled live event is a specific YouTube broadcast with a start time and an upcoming watch page. It is useful when viewers should be able to find the event in advance and opt into reminders. A continuous prerecorded channel, by contrast, is intended to keep playing over an extended period. Do not assume that scheduling one event makes it an unlimited-duration stream: YouTube’s guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, and does not establish unlimited runtime for a single event.

Set up a scheduled prerecorded stream
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Manage → Schedule stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings. Scheduling gives you an upcoming watch page to share and lets viewers opt into reminders. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the event’s connection details. In Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled event. Enter both in the encoder or streaming service you will use. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it; reset it if it is exposed. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Load the prerecorded program. Select the video file or media sequence in the encoder/service and configure it as the outgoing video and audio feed. Confirm that the playback order and any looping behavior are set in that tool; YouTube receives the encoder’s feed and does not, by itself, turn an uploaded file into a continuous broadcast.
- Allow setup and test time. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use the lead time to test representative motion and sound, confirm the event’s watch page is accessible, and monitor stream health. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Start the event in YouTube. Start the encoder and wait for its incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the picture and audio are correct, then click Go live when you are ready to start the scheduled broadcast.
- End it cleanly. When the event is finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement should not be read as a guarantee about longer streams or uninterrupted, indefinite operation.
Choose encoder settings that suit the source and connection
Use the settings supported by your encoder and source, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen stream. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so sending a higher-quality source is not a promise that every viewer will receive that exact format. YouTube’s current guidance covers RTMPS, codecs, bitrate ranges, resolution, and frame rate in its encoder settings and bitrate guide.

- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the protocol and server details presented for the event in Live Control Room.
- Video: YouTube’s current options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Select a codec your encoder supports and follow the bitrate range YouTube gives for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every combination.
- Rate control and keyframes: Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check the feed on the preview so that the audio is present and synchronized before going live.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the source and the connection rather than upscaling needlessly. Test with the same kind of motion and audio as the actual program.
Decide on latency, DVR, and a trailer
Latency
Lower latency can increase playback buffering. For prerecorded programming without real-time audience interaction, minimizing delay may matter less than consistent playback; choose the latency option with that trade-off in mind.
DVR
When DVR is enabled, viewers can pause and rewind the live stream, then resume from their paused point. Decide whether that viewing behavior suits the program in the event’s settings.

Trailer
YouTube allows a trailer on a scheduled stream’s watch page before it starts if the channel has more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. The allowed trailer length is 15 seconds to 3 minutes. Check the current options in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

YouTube describes professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher-production events, but says expensive equipment is not required to get started. A dedicated hardware encoder is not a default purchase requirement for replaying a prepared video.

Troubleshoot common launch problems
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm the encoder is running and that it has the scheduled event’s matching stream URL and key. Check the encoder’s connection status and wait for the feed to arrive before attempting to go live.
- Preview appears, but the event has not started: For a scheduled event, receiving an encoder feed is not the same as launching the broadcast. Click Go live in Live Control Room after checking the preview.
- Audio is missing or the picture is wrong: Verify the selected source, audio input, codec, and output settings in the encoder. Test with representative sound and motion before the scheduled start.
- Playback buffers or the feed is unstable: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Reduce the output demands or use a more stable connection, then test again; lower latency can also increase viewer buffering.
- The stream key may be compromised: Reset the key in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder with the replacement. Keep the new key private.
- The event ends or archives sooner than expected: A scheduled event should not be treated as an indefinitely running broadcast. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; plan and verify your intended duration rather than assuming one event can continue forever.
Protect the content and channel
Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream, including music, footage, and any material inside a playlist. A video being prerecorded does not make it exempt from copyright rules or YouTube’s channel policies. Review YouTube’s current rules for the material and format you plan to broadcast before scheduling.
