How to Stream Pre-Recorded Videos to YouTube Live From an External SSD

Connect the external SSD to a computer, play the video through encoder software, and send the encoded output to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream, then enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder. The SSD stores the source file; it does not encode or transmit the stream by itself.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel that can go live: YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • The source video on the SSD: Confirm that your computer and chosen player or encoder can read the file from the drive.
  • An encoder and reliable upload connection: The encoder sends the video and audio to YouTube; the network must sustain the selected stream bitrate.

YouTube does not specify a minimum SSD speed, interface, filesystem, or universal set of source-file formats for this workflow. Compatibility depends on your computer, playback software, or hardware encoder, so verify it with the relevant documentation rather than assuming every USB drive and video file will work.

Stream from an SSD using a computer

  1. Connect and test the drive. Plug the SSD into the computer you will use for the stream. Open the intended video and check that both picture and sound play smoothly. Use the same cable, port, file, and computer you plan to use for the event; a playback stall can become a stall in the live output.
  2. Choose an encoder workflow. Use encoder software that can take the video and audio from your playback workflow and send them as a live stream. YouTube documents the encoder and stream-credential process, but does not prescribe a particular software player or SSD setup. Check your encoder’s instructions for how to select or capture the media source.
  3. Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create a stream or select the one you intend to use. Set the intended privacy, schedule, and event details in Live Control Room.
  4. Copy the connection details into the encoder. In Live Control Room, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your stream.
  5. Set the encoder and start a preview. Use RTMPS where available, configure video, audio, frame rate, and bitrate, then connect the encoder. Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the stream public or starting a scheduled event.
  6. Monitor the full chain. Confirm that the file continues playing, audio remains in sync, the encoder stays connected, and YouTube reports healthy ingest. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time and monitoring the event.

Encoder settings and upload capacity

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends CBR encoding, 44.1 kHz audio for stereo, and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution rather than guessing or applying one setting to every stream.

Measure upload capacity on the actual network you will use, especially if it is shared. YouTube recommends keeping total outgoing stream bitrate at or below available upload bandwidth while leaving 20% headroom. If you send both primary and backup streams, account for their combined bitrate and the headroom. A fast download result does not establish that upload capacity is sufficient. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Test before the scheduled stream

  • Play a representative section of the actual video from the SSD, including its most motion-heavy scenes and quietest audio.
  • Check the YouTube preview, audio level, stream health, and connection before the event. If possible, run a private or unlisted test first.
  • Leave the computer awake, the SSD connected, and the encoder running for the entire stream. A local playback workflow depends on those components remaining available.
  • Repeat the test on the network and equipment intended for the live event; a successful test on another connection does not confirm this setup’s upload capacity.

YouTube’s live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring. Its official encoder guide explains the connection workflow and lists compatible encoder options: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Computer-free scheduled playback: AJA HELO Plus

YouTube’s verified-encoder guide describes the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream functionality for scheduling pre-recorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a particular dedicated hardware option, not a general promise that any external SSD, filesystem, or media format will work with it. Before purchasing, confirm directly with AJA that the exact storage and video files you intend to use are supported.

Common problems and what to check

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder: Confirm that the server URL and stream key are entered in the correct fields, the key belongs to the selected stream, and the encoder is connected. If you exposed the key, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • The live picture freezes or stutters: Check whether playback from the SSD itself is smooth, then inspect encoder load and YouTube stream health. Verify upload capacity and bitrate; leave the recommended 20% upload headroom.
  • Video plays but sound is missing or poor: Check that the encoder is receiving the intended audio source and is using a supported codec. Test a representative section before going live.
  • The video will not open from the SSD: Confirm the chosen player or encoder supports the file and the drive’s format. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not establish universal SSD or media-file compatibility.
  • The encoder disconnects during a test: Check the network’s upload stability and avoid relying on a connection shared with heavy uploads or other traffic. Reconnect and verify a fresh preview before the event.
