To stream a podcast with captions on YouTube Live, create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio, connect your encoder with the stream URL and key, then choose captions: eligible streams can use YouTube’s automatic live captions, or you can send captions embedded in the video or through supported captioning software. Test the captions in Live Control Room before the broadcast; the available route depends on your language, latency, and captioning setup.
Check that your channel can go live
Before building the show, confirm live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose how captions will reach viewers
YouTube describes three routes for live captions. They differ in language availability, equipment or operator needs, and whether you must provide a caption feed. YouTube’s documentation does not provide a head-to-head accuracy comparison, so test the route you plan to use with representative speech.
| Route | What you set up | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic live captions | Enable Closed captions for the stream and select Automatic captions, if the option is available. | YouTube describes this as an English-only rollout for eligible channels streaming at normal latency. Live automatic captions do not remain on the archived video. |
| Embedded captions | Choose Embedded 608/708 in the stream setup and use an encoder that sends EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the video. | The encoder must produce compatible captions; selecting the setting alone does not create captions. YouTube currently supports one caption track. |
| Supported caption software over HTTP | Enable captions for the event, copy the signed captions ingestion URL, and provide it to the captioning software or operator. | YouTube’s event instructions specify a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Each stream entry point has one caption feed, and YouTube currently supports one caption track. Confirm current support and workflow before the event. |
For details on embedded and HTTP captioning, consult YouTube’s live-caption requirements. Automatic live-caption availability and setup are described in YouTube’s automatic captioning help; availability and interface controls can change.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Add the title and event details. Scheduling gives you time to prepare and promote the watch page.
- Choose a video presentation: a host camera, a branded still or motion graphic, or another appropriate video source. An encoder-based podcast live stream needs a video feed; do not assume an audio-only signal will appear as a YouTube video.
- Open the stream settings in Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the Live Control Room workflow.
Connect and configure your encoder
- In your streaming encoder, choose a YouTube preset if one is available. Otherwise, enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when supported; YouTube recommends it to encrypt the connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Set the video and audio output to match the show and your upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes.
- Use the current YouTube bitrate, resolution, and encoder settings table to choose a bitrate for your exact resolution and frame rate. Avoid selecting a setting your internet connection cannot sustain; run a test at the intended settings before the show.
- Configure the caption route selected above. For embedded captions, the encoder must send compatible EIA 608/CEA 708 data. For HTTP captions, provide the signed ingestion URL to the supported software or caption operator and allow for the specified delay. YouTube’s documented workflow supports one caption feed per stream entry point and one caption track.
Test the complete show before going live
YouTube advises setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. In Live Control Room, check the preview before selecting Start Streaming. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast and monitoring stream health. YouTube also says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”

Go live, then review the replay separately
Once the preview and caption feed are working, start the broadcast from the encoder and confirm the event is live in Live Control Room. End the encoder transmission and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours.

Do not assume live automatic captions will be present in the replay: YouTube says they disappear when the stream ends. Captions for the video-on-demand archive are generated through a separate process and may differ from the live text. Check the replay and its caption controls after processing, and arrange a separate caption track if the archived episode must have dependable captions.
Troubleshoot common caption and stream problems
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours.
- The encoder does not connect: Recheck that the stream URL and key were copied from the correct event and entered in the matching encoder fields. If the key has been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Automatic captions are missing: Confirm the feature is available for the channel and stream, the stream is using normal latency, and the individual stream’s Closed captions setting is set to Automatic captions. YouTube documents this as an English-only rollout, not a universal feature.
- Embedded captions do not appear: Confirm the encoder is actually outputting EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and that Embedded 608/708 is selected. The setting cannot generate captions by itself.
- HTTP captions are late or absent: Check that the caption software or operator has the signed ingestion URL for the correct event and that the configured 30- or 60-second delay is understood. Verify that the software is supported for YouTube’s workflow.
- Captions appear live but not in the archive: This is expected for automatic live captions. The replay uses a separate VOD caption process, so check it after processing or provide captions for the archive separately.
- Video or audio quality is unstable: Check the Live Control Room preview and health status, then reduce the encoder bitrate or choose a lower resolution/frame rate that your upload can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder table rather than relying on a bitrate intended for a different format.
