You can use your phone as a handheld screen and controller for games rendered on your own gaming PC. The PC stays on, runs the game, and sends compressed video and audio to the phone; your touch or controller input travels back to the PC. This is remote play, not cloud gaming, so a separate cloud subscription cannot replace the computer that owns and runs the game.

For the simplest route, use Steam Link with Steam running on the host computer. For more control over which Windows applications appear and how the host is configured, install Sunshine on the PC and Moonlight on the phone. Start on your home network before attempting play over the internet.

What streaming PC games to a phone actually does

Streaming changes where the picture is displayed, not where the game is executed. Your gaming PC performs the rendering, simulation, storage and game-server work. It captures the resulting frames and audio, encodes them, and sends them over your network. The phone decodes that stream and displays it. Touch gestures, a Bluetooth gamepad or a USB-C controller are sent in the opposite direction as remote input.

“When you play a game using Remote Play, video and audio are sent from your gaming PC to another device. Remote input and multiplayer voice are sent back to the gaming PC, all within milliseconds.” — Valve, Steam Remote Play

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Because the PC is doing the work, the phone does not need the game installed and does not need desktop-class graphics hardware. It does need a compatible client app, a network that can carry the stream consistently, and a host PC that is powered on, signed in and reachable. If the computer sleeps, shuts down or loses its network connection, the phone has nothing to display.

The phrase “handheld gaming device” can be misleading here. A dedicated handheld console is optional. A phone plus a compatible controller is already a handheld client; on-screen controls can be used for a quick test.

Choose Steam Link or Moonlight with Sunshine

Both routes stream from your own computer, but they suit different libraries and levels of configuration.

Consideration Steam Link Moonlight with Sunshine
Best starting point Games already managed by Steam Steam games plus games or desktop programs you want to add manually
Host software Steam running on the gaming PC Sunshine, an open-source host recommended by the Moonlight project
Initial setup Install the app, place phone and PC on the same network, then pair Install both components, discover the PC, start pairing and confirm a PIN on the host
Configuration Usually fewer host decisions More control over applications, stream settings and remote-access options
Game discovery Steam library and Steam interface Sunshine includes Steam and a remote-desktop entry; other programs can be added
Playing away from home Depends on Steam Remote Play and the networks involved Requires additional network configuration; Sunshine documents UPnP and alternatives
Controller support Depends on the phone, operating system, app version and controller Depends on the same factors; Moonlight documents specific iOS/tvOS controller support

Choose Steam Link when your games are in Steam and you want the shortest path to a local test. Choose Moonlight and Sunshine when you need to launch non-Steam programs, want host-side controls, or expect to tune the stream in detail. Neither option removes the requirement for a running, reachable gaming PC.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Requirements before you begin

Gaming PC

  • A PC capable of running the game normally, with the game installed and updated.
  • A current Steam installation for Steam Link, or Sunshine installed and configured for Moonlight.
  • The computer left awake and signed in while you play. Disable sleep during a session or configure your operating system to keep the host available.
  • A network connection to the same router as the phone for your first test.

Phone and app

  • Install Steam Link from the phone’s app store for the Steam route. Valve lists Android phones and tablets and Apple mobile devices among supported clients; check the current store listing for the exact device and operating-system requirements.
  • Android support documentation for Steam Link lists Android 5.0 and newer. App availability and behavior can change, so verify the current listing rather than relying on an old screenshot or version number.
  • Install Moonlight from the appropriate app store for the Moonlight route. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC from the current Moonlight project documentation.

Network

For a first attempt, connect both devices to the same home network. Moonlight recommends a good 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connection for the client and a wired Ethernet connection between the gaming PC and router. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular frame rate, image quality or latency; walls, interference, router load and the host’s encoding ability still matter.

Controls

A controller is optional. On-screen buttons are useful for confirming that the connection works, but a phone-compatible Bluetooth or USB-C gamepad is generally more comfortable for action games. Compatibility depends on the phone’s operating system, version, connector and the streaming app. Do not assume that a controller that pairs with the phone will expose every button correctly inside a streamed game.

Set up Steam Link on your phone

1. Prepare the host PC

  1. Turn on the gaming PC and sign in to the desktop.
  2. Open Steam and sign in to the account that owns or can launch the intended game.
  3. Confirm that the game appears in the Steam library and starts normally when launched locally.
  4. Keep Steam running and prevent the computer from entering sleep while you test.

2. Install and pair the client

  1. Install Steam Link from your phone’s app store.
  2. Connect the phone and gaming PC to the same home network. Steam Support specifically recommends this arrangement for initial Android and Apple setup.
  3. Open Steam Link and follow its current pairing prompts. The app may show the host PC and display a pairing code that must be entered or confirmed on the computer.
  4. When pairing completes, run the app’s connection test if offered. Use the current interface; labels and screens can change between app versions.

3. Launch and control a game

  1. From Steam Link’s library view, select the game and choose the launch command.
  2. Try a short section of gameplay before changing advanced settings. Check that video, audio and input remain synchronized.
  3. Pair a supported gamepad through the phone’s Bluetooth settings or USB-C connection if you prefer physical controls. If the game shows a desktop cursor or Big Picture interface instead of gameplay, use the on-screen controls to select the game and launch it from Steam.

4. If the first test stutters

  • Move the phone close to the router and repeat the test.
  • Pause large downloads, video streams and backups competing for Wi-Fi capacity.
  • Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet if possible. Moonlight’s documentation makes this recommendation for a good streaming experience; it can also help Steam Link by removing one wireless hop, but it cannot fix every problem.
  • Check whether the PC is using a crowded 2.4 GHz band while the phone supports 5 GHz. Do not treat a band change as a guaranteed cure; local interference and router configuration differ.

Set up Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is the phone-side client. Sunshine is the host service that captures and encodes the PC’s desktop or selected applications. The Moonlight project identifies Sunshine as its recommended open-source host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Install the two components

  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC using the current instructions from the Moonlight project.
  2. Install Moonlight on the phone.
  3. Start Sunshine and complete its initial host configuration. Keep the host service running while pairing and playing.

2. Pair on the home network

  1. Connect the phone and PC to the same router. Local pairing is the simplest way to separate an app or firewall problem from an internet-routing problem.
  2. Open Moonlight. It should discover the PC on the local network; if it does not, verify that both devices are on the same subnet and that the host firewall allows Sunshine.
  3. Select the PC in Moonlight and choose the pairing command.
  4. Moonlight will display a PIN. Enter or confirm that PIN in Sunshine on the PC. Pairing creates a trusted relationship between that client and host; it does not make the PC publicly accessible by itself.

3. Launch Steam or another program

Sunshine normally exposes a Steam entry and a remote-desktop entry. Select Steam to browse and launch games through Steam, or use the desktop entry to start a program manually. If a game or application is not listed, add it in Sunshine using the program-management instructions in the current Moonlight guide. You may need the executable path and any launch arguments required by that game.

4. Tune the stream gradually

  1. Begin with a resolution and frame rate the host PC, phone display and network can sustain.
  2. Run a game in a repeatable scene, such as its menu and a short movement section, before increasing quality.
  3. If motion breaks up, reduce the stream resolution or frame rate first, then investigate Wi-Fi interference and host encoding load.
  4. If the picture is stable but controls feel delayed, test closer to the router and use Ethernet for the PC. There is no universal latency number: the result depends on the game, host hardware, phone, router and route between them.

Use Moonlight or Steam Link away from home

Remote play across the internet is a second-stage project. Make local streaming work first, because an internet connection adds routing, firewall and carrier restrictions that can hide the original problem.

Moonlight and Sunshine network options

Sunshine includes a UPnP option, and the Moonlight setup guide documents other approaches for internet access, including port-forwarding considerations, IPv6 and virtual-network options. The correct method depends on your router, internet service and whether your provider uses carrier-grade NAT. Some mobile and public networks block the traffic needed for game streaming, and a setup that works at one location may fail at another.

  1. Confirm that local Moonlight pairing and gameplay are reliable.
  2. Read the current Moonlight internet-streaming instructions for your router and network type.
  3. Choose a remote-access method supported by that guide. Enable only the services and ports required by the method you select.
  4. Test from a different connection, such as a phone’s mobile-data connection, while the PC remains at home. Keep expectations realistic: internet upload capacity, mobile-data limits and route congestion affect the result.
  5. If the host cannot be reached, check for carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, blocked inbound connections or an IPv6-only arrangement. The Moonlight troubleshooting documentation addresses these cases; changing random ports is not a substitute for identifying which network limitation applies.

Security and availability precautions

  • Use a strong, unique host password and protect the phone with a device lock.
  • Do not expose a remote-desktop entry or game launcher to the public internet unless you understand what that entry can control.
  • Keep Sunshine, Moonlight, Steam and the host operating system updated from their official distribution channels.
  • Remember that remote play requires the PC to stay powered, awake, connected and able to start the game. A sleeping or rebooting host cannot accept input.

Controllers and handheld ergonomics

Touch controls can verify the setup, but many PC games were designed around physical sticks, triggers and shoulder buttons. Before buying a controller, check the phone’s width, case clearance, connector location, operating-system support and whether the controller works in the streaming client as well as in the game.

Bluetooth is convenient, while a USB-C controller avoids wireless pairing and may reduce one source of interference. Wired accessories can draw power from the phone, so monitor battery level during long sessions. A separate Bluetooth gamepad also lets you prop the phone on a stand instead of holding the entire assembly.

Moonlight documents Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 Bluetooth controller support on iOS/tvOS 13 or later. Earlier iOS/tvOS versions are more limited and generally rely on Made for iPhone/iPad (MFi) controllers. This is a documented compatibility point, not a guarantee that every button mapping will work in every game. Android behavior likewise varies by device, OS release and controller firmware.

Network tuning that makes the biggest difference

Prefer a wired host

Ethernet between the gaming PC and router removes the host’s Wi-Fi hop. Moonlight specifically recommends this arrangement. It is a conditional upgrade, not a requirement: if local streaming is already stable, buying a new router or cable may provide little benefit.

Use the right Wi-Fi band at the phone

Moonlight recommends good 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) on the client. A 5 GHz signal usually offers more available capacity than a crowded 2.4 GHz network, but it travels less effectively through walls. Test the room where you actually play rather than assuming the router’s advertised standard predicts your result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce contention

  • Pause cloud backups, game downloads and high-bitrate video while testing.
  • Keep the phone from switching between access points during a session.
  • Check whether another device is saturating the router’s upload or download queue.
  • Retest at different times if the problem appears only during busy household hours.

Balance quality against consistency

A higher resolution or frame rate increases the amount of data the host must encode and the network must deliver. Start conservatively, then raise one setting at a time. If frames arrive late, a lower but consistent stream is more playable than a sharper stream with repeated stalls. Official guidance does not establish a guaranteed quality or latency result for any particular phone, PC or router.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The PC does not appear in the app

  • Confirm the phone and PC are on the same home network for local setup, not an isolated guest network.
  • Make sure Steam is open for Steam Link or Sunshine is running for Moonlight.
  • Check the host firewall and security software for blocked local discovery or streaming traffic.
  • Restart the app and host service, then retry pairing. For Moonlight, verify that the PIN is entered in Sunshine on the correct PC.

Pairing succeeds but a game will not launch

  • Launch the game directly on the PC to confirm that its launcher, account and updates are working.
  • For Steam Link, check that the game belongs to the signed-in Steam library and is visible in Steam.
  • For Moonlight, select the Steam entry or add the game’s executable to Sunshine. Recheck the executable path if a custom launcher was updated.
  • Close overlays or launchers that are waiting for an acknowledgement on the host desktop.

Video is blurry, frozen or full of pauses

  • Move the phone near the router and stop competing traffic.
  • Use Ethernet for the host PC and the 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6 client connection recommended by Moonlight when available.
  • Lower stream resolution or frame rate until playback is consistent.
  • Check host CPU/GPU usage. A game that already pushes the PC to its limit leaves less capacity for capture and encoding.

Controls feel wrong or do not register

  • Test with the app’s on-screen controls to determine whether the issue is the physical controller or the stream.
  • Forget and re-pair the Bluetooth controller, or reconnect a USB-C controller.
  • Verify the phone OS, controller firmware and app support. iOS/tvOS controller behavior is especially version-dependent; Moonlight’s documented Xbox One S and PS4 Bluetooth support applies to iOS/tvOS 13 or later.
  • Check the game’s own controller settings and disable conflicting desktop input tools.

Local play works but internet play fails

  • Return to the local test and confirm it still works after any Sunshine or router changes.
  • Follow the current Moonlight guidance for UPnP, port forwarding, IPv6 and virtual-network alternatives.
  • Ask whether the home connection uses carrier-grade NAT or whether the remote network blocks inbound or streaming traffic. These conditions may require a different supported method or make direct access impractical.

Which route should you use?

Use Steam Link if your priority is getting Steam games on the phone with minimal host configuration. It is the natural first experiment for a Steam library and a local home-network session.

Use Moonlight with Sunshine if you want to stream games outside Steam, expose a controlled desktop entry, or adjust host and client behavior more deeply. It has a more involved setup and its internet-access options demand networking work, but it is not limited to the Steam library.

In either case, begin with the PC and phone on the same network, confirm that a short game session is stable, and only then add a controller, increase quality or attempt remote access. That sequence isolates problems and avoids buying networking hardware before you know what your existing connection can do.
