1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe simplest low-latency setup is Steam Link: leave the game running on a PC with Steam, pair the Android app on your home network, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet, and use the router’s 5 GHz band for the phone. Start with a compatible controller for games designed around physical buttons. If Steam Link does not fit your library or host arrangement, Moonlight on Android paired with Sunshine is the main documented alternative.
No app can promise a universal latency figure. Delay depends on the PC’s encoder, the phone’s decoder and display, controller input, Wi-Fi consistency, and the game itself. The steps below remove the avoidable sources of stutter and input delay without claiming that every network will feel identical.

What Android game streaming actually does
Streaming does not move a PC game to the phone. The game continues to run on the computer. A host application captures the rendered frames, encodes them as a video stream, and sends that stream to the phone. The phone decodes the video and displays it; your touch or controller input travels back to the PC. A low-latency result therefore requires every stage to stay responsive.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The round trip includes game simulation, rendering, video encoding, network transit in both directions, phone decoding, display scan-out, and controller processing. A fast internet plan cannot compensate for a congested wireless channel, a slow encoder, or a phone that is thermally throttling. For a local setup, keeping both devices on the same home network avoids the extra distance and routing of remote play, but it still does not make delay disappear.

Valve’s Steam Link documentation and the Moonlight/Sunshine project guidance provide configuration advice rather than a guaranteed end-to-end latency number. Treat any number quoted for another person’s phone, game, or router as a different measurement, not a promise for your setup.
Requirements and compatibility
Check these items before troubleshooting. They determine whether the stream can start and whether the controls will be practical.
| Item | What you need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Host PC | A computer that can run the game with Steam installed and running; for Moonlight, a compatible host such as Sunshine. | The PC performs the game rendering and video encoding. |
| Android phone | Steam Link supports Android 5.0 and newer. Moonlight supports Android devices with standard Android gamepad mapping. | The phone decodes the stream and sends input. Older hardware may have less capable decoding or displays. |
| Local network | Both devices on the same home network for the initial Steam Link pairing. Prefer Ethernet for the PC and a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for the phone. | A short, consistent path reduces packet loss and delay variation. |
| Router | A 5 GHz wireless router; Moonlight documentation specifically calls out Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for the client. | 5 GHz generally has less interference than 2.4 GHz, although its useful range is shorter. |
| Controls | Steam Link touch controls, or a compatible gamepad. Valve lists Xbox One S and Razer Kishi; DualShock 4 is listed for Android 9.0 and newer. | Action, racing, and console-style games are usually difficult to control accurately with touch alone. |
Controller support is device- and Android-version-specific. A controller not named in Valve’s list may still work, but “works” is not the same as officially supported. Check that the phone can pair with the controller and that the buttons are recognized before buying an accessory or starting a long session.

Steam Link is the first option to try when the games are in Steam. The app extends Steam Link functionality to Android phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer.
- Prepare the host. On the PC that will run the game, launch Steam and sign in. Leave Steam open while pairing and playing.
- Join the same network. Connect the phone to the same home network as the PC. For the initial setup, avoid guest Wi-Fi, public hotspots, and networks that separate wireless clients from wired devices.
- Install Steam Link. Get the Steam Link app from Google Play or another Android distribution route listed by Valve, then open it and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- Complete pairing. Select the detected computer and enter any pairing code shown by the app. If the computer is not found, confirm that Steam is running and that both devices are on the same non-isolated network.
- Choose your input. Pair a supported controller before launching a game, or select the app’s touch controls. Test the sticks, triggers, and menu buttons in Steam Link’s input screen.
- Launch a game. Start from the Steam Link library. Keep the phone awake and in a location with a strong 5 GHz signal while you evaluate responsiveness.
The first successful connection establishes that the software and local discovery work. Do not change several performance settings at once after that point; a controlled baseline makes it possible to identify which change helps.

Build a network path that does not add avoidable delay
Wire the host PC
Valve recommends a wired connection for the best Remote Play experience. Connect the gaming PC directly to a LAN port on the router with Ethernet. This removes one wireless hop and gives the encoder a more predictable path to the phone. If wiring is impossible, keep the PC on a strong, uncongested connection and avoid placing the router behind a television, inside a cabinet, or at floor level.
Use 5 GHz for the phone
Connect the phone to the router’s 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz when the signal remains strong. Valve notes that 5 GHz normally has less interference from nearby networks and devices, while its shorter range means a distant room or several walls can make it less reliable. A stable 5 GHz signal is preferable to a nominally faster band that repeatedly drops packets.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reduce contention
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, and other high-volume traffic during a session. Congestion can produce uneven delivery even when a speed test reports ample throughput. Keep the phone reasonably close to the access point and test from the actual chair or bed where you intend to play, not beside the router.
Avoid client isolation
Steam Remote Play can fail when the router uses client isolation or when the devices are on a guest, school, work, or public network. In the router’s wireless or guest-network settings, disable isolation for the trusted home network or move both devices to a network that permits local device-to-device traffic. Do not bypass security controls on a network you do not administer.
Interpret “fast” correctly
Bandwidth is only one part of quality. Sunshine’s troubleshooting guidance emphasizes low latency variance and minimal packet loss. A route with modest but steady throughput can feel better than a faster route that alternates between clean frames and bursts of retransmission. Look for consistency while moving around the room, not just the highest speed-test result.

Configure Steam and the host PC
Enable hardware encoding when available
In Steam’s Remote Play advanced host options, enable hardware encoding if the PC supports it. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU load and make frame delivery more predictable than software encoding, although the exact result depends on the graphics hardware and driver. Steam Link’s performance overlay can show which encoder and decoder are active, giving you evidence instead of guesswork.
Use the overlay to locate the bottleneck
Turn on the Steam Link performance overlay while testing. Observe whether the warnings point to the host, network, or client side. A network warning that appears when another device starts a download calls for traffic control; a host-encoding warning points toward game settings or encoder selection; a client-decoding warning suggests the phone is struggling with the chosen stream.
Lower the workload only when needed
Valve’s troubleshooting guidance suggests reducing the game’s resolution or turning off vertical sync when streaming performance is poor. Try one change at a time, then replay the same scene. Lowering resolution can reduce the amount of work the PC must render and encode, while disabling vertical sync can remove an additional queue of waiting frames. These are troubleshooting options, not requirements for every computer.
Keep the game predictable
Close applications that compete for CPU, GPU, disk, or network resources. If a title has a frame-rate cap, test a stable cap rather than an uncapped rate that repeatedly saturates the GPU. Avoid changing graphics presets and stream settings simultaneously; otherwise you will not know which change affected input response.
Choose controls that match the game
Touch controls are convenient for turn-based games, menus, and titles designed for a small number of buttons. They are a poor substitute for analog sticks, triggers, and rapid shoulder-button combinations. A physical controller also keeps your hands from covering the display.

| Input option | Documented compatibility | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Link touch controls | Built into the Android app. | Useful when a game has simple controls or when you need a quick test without extra hardware. |
| Xbox One S controller | Listed by Valve as a supported input. | Suitable for most gamepad-oriented PC games when the phone and controller pair correctly. |
| Razer Kishi | Listed by Valve as a supported input. | A phone-mounted form factor that avoids holding a separate controller. |
| DualShock 4 | Listed by Valve for Android 9.0 and newer. | Check the phone’s Android version and Bluetooth behavior before relying on it. |
| Other controllers | May work, but Valve does not list every device as officially supported. | Verify button mapping in Steam Link and in the game before a serious session. |
Controller latency has its own path: Bluetooth or USB input reaches Android, the app sends it to the PC, and the game responds in a later frame. If video looks smooth but controls feel delayed, compare a wired or phone-mounted controller where practical, test another game, and check whether the game itself has input buffering.
Moonlight with Sunshine: a separate host-and-client route
Moonlight is an Android streaming client, while Sunshine is a self-hosted game-stream host. This arrangement is useful when you want a host/client pair independent of Steam’s library interface or when your games are not all managed by Steam. It requires more configuration than Steam Link because you install and pair the host software separately.
- Install Sunshine on the gaming PC. Complete its host setup and create the credentials it requests. Keep the host on the same trusted network as the phone for initial pairing.
- Install Moonlight on Android. Open the app and allow it to discover a compatible host, or add the host according to the app’s pairing flow.
- Pair the devices. Confirm the pairing code on the PC and phone. If discovery fails, verify that the router permits local traffic and that the host firewall allows the required application access.
- Configure the client path. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 for the phone when possible, and connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet, as Moonlight’s setup guidance recommends.
- Map a controller. Moonlight documents support for gamepads using standard Android button mapping. Test every button in the client before opening the game.
- Launch and observe. Use the client and host diagnostics to identify packet loss, unstable latency, encoding load, or decoding limits before changing quality settings.
Moonlight and Sunshine are not proven to be universally faster than Steam Link. The two paths use different host software, encoders, defaults, and device combinations, so a claim of “fastest” without a controlled test on your hardware is unreliable.
| Consideration | Steam Link | Moonlight with Sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Run Steam on the PC, install Steam Link on Android, and pair on the same network. | Install Sunshine as the host and Moonlight as the Android client, then pair them. |
| Game library | Natural fit for games launched through Steam. | Separate host/client workflow for a broader self-managed setup. |
| Controller guidance | Valve names Xbox One S, Razer Kishi, and DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer; other devices may work. | Gamepads using standard Android button mapping are documented. |
| Network guidance | Valve recommends wired networking and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. | Project guidance recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 to the client and a wired host. |
| Measured advantage | No controlled comparative measurement establishes a universal lead. | No controlled comparative measurement establishes a universal lead. |

| Frames freeze or arrive in bursts | Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, or traffic contention. | Move the phone closer to the router, use 5 GHz, pause downloads, and wire the PC. |
| Image is smooth but input feels late | Controller path, display processing, game buffering, or host frame queue. | Test a supported controller, compare another game, check the overlay, and try disabling vertical sync as a troubleshooting step. |
| Stream is consistently low-frame-rate | Host rendering or encoding load. | Enable hardware encoding where supported, lower game resolution, and close competing GPU/CPU applications. |
| Phone becomes hot and performance declines | Client decoding or thermal throttling. | Remove a thick case, improve airflow, lower stream demands, and avoid charging in a way that adds heat during testing. |
| PC is not discovered | Steam is closed, devices are on different networks, or the router isolates clients. | Start Steam, confirm the same home network, leave guest Wi-Fi, and disable client isolation on the trusted network. |
| Controller connects but buttons are wrong | Android mapping or game-specific layout. | Re-pair the controller, verify the Android version, test the mapping screen, and select the correct in-game layout. |
| Connection drops when walking to another room | 5 GHz range limit or weak signal. | Use a nearer access point, reposition the router, or switch only if the alternative is demonstrably more stable. |
If Steam Link’s overlay identifies the encoder and decoder, record those names before changing settings. A different encoder or decoder can explain a change in feel even when the game and router are unchanged.

Practical tuning sequence
Use this order so each test isolates a class of problem.
- Play beside the router with the phone on 5 GHz and the PC on Ethernet. This establishes a best-case local baseline.
- Confirm that the game itself is running smoothly on the PC monitor. Streaming cannot repair a game that already stutters at the host.
- Enable hardware encoding in Steam’s Remote Play advanced host options when supported, then inspect the performance overlay.
- Pair the controller and test a repeatable section of the game. Compare touch input only if you need to know whether the controller is the source of delay.
- If the host is overloaded, lower the game’s resolution or turn off vertical sync, changing only one setting per test.
- Move to your normal playing position and repeat the same scene. If performance changes with distance, the wireless path is the limiting factor.
- For Moonlight/Sunshine, repeat the same baseline with the host wired and the phone on 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6. Compare your own observations rather than assuming one application is faster.
When a new router or accessory is justified
A new router is conditional, not a prerequisite. Consider replacing or adding access-point hardware only when the current router cannot provide a stable 5 GHz signal at the playing position, lacks a suitable wired connection for the PC, or has unavoidable congestion. Moonlight’s guidance points to Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6; the relevant improvement is a consistent path, not a marketing speed rating alone.
A controller is the more broadly useful accessory when touch controls are the problem. Valve’s documented options include Xbox One S, Razer Kishi, and DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer. Check the exact phone dimensions, connector or Bluetooth requirements, Android version, and button mapping before purchase. Do not assume that a controller supported by one Android model will behave identically on another.

Remote play outside the home
The procedure above is optimized for a local network. Playing from another location adds internet upload capacity at the host, download capacity at the phone, carrier or public-network variability, and additional routing distance. A setup that feels responsive beside the router may feel delayed elsewhere even when the PC and phone are unchanged. Establish a stable local baseline first; otherwise you cannot tell whether a remote-play problem comes from the host, the home uplink, or the phone’s current network.
How to decide between the two apps
Choose Steam Link first when your games are in Steam and you want the fewest moving parts: Steam is already the host environment, the Android app handles pairing, and Valve publishes the Android and network requirements in one place. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine when you specifically want a separate self-hosted arrangement, need a client outside Steam’s normal workflow, or are comfortable managing host software, pairing, and diagnostics yourself. Neither choice eliminates the need for a wired host, a stable 5 GHz path, suitable encoding, and a controller that Android recognizes.
Compatibility note
The Android version, controller support, and configuration details in this guide reflect Valve and Moonlight/Sunshine documentation available in October 2026. App interfaces and supported hardware can change, so check the current requirements shown by the app and the host software when you install them.
