You do not have to confront, warn, or debate a viewer before you moderate or report conduct that makes you uncomfortable. Remove the message, time out or ban the account, ask a moderator to act, and report behavior that violates Twitch’s rules. Twitch says communicating that conduct is unwanted is necessary only when it feels safe and appropriate.
Start by stopping the interaction, then add barriers such as AutoMod, blocked terms, chat verification, and suspicious-user controls. Viewer-side Chat Filters and the Block Whispers from Strangers setting can reduce unwanted contact beyond your channel. If a message exposes anyone’s private information or you fear a real-world threat, protect privacy and contact local law enforcement when necessary.

You can act without confronting the viewer
Twitch’s Community Guidelines say a report can be valid even when the target has not first told the other person to stop. Twitch’s Civility and Respect FAQ states: "No, you may decide that some forms of harassment are severe enough to warrant reporting without first communicating to the other user that they are unwanted."

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat matters during a live broadcast, when confronting someone can give them more attention, expose you to further abuse, or make it harder to keep control of the stream. A timeout, ban, message deletion, or moderator action both stops the immediate behavior and signals that it is not welcome. You are allowed to choose the least disruptive action that makes you feel safe; you do not owe the viewer an explanation in public chat.

What Twitch describes as harassment
The guidelines prohibit harassment and describe sexual harassment as unwanted conduct that makes people feel uncomfortable, degraded, unsafe, or discouraged from participating. The same policy allows unwanted behavior to be established through a report, a channel-moderation action, or a clear denouncement. You can therefore rely on moderation tools rather than trying to prove your boundary through an argument.
A practical response for the first five minutes
- Stop the interaction. Delete the offending message, apply a timeout, or ban the account. If you have moderators, tell one to handle it while you continue the broadcast. Do not quote the message repeatedly or turn the incident into a debate.
- Preserve what you need for a report. Note the account name, approximate time, the stream or chat where it occurred, and any relevant message or Whisper. Capture evidence only if doing so does not display private information or put you at additional risk.
- Close the obvious route back in. Add words or phrases to your blocked-terms list, increase AutoMod protection, or require chat verification for the group most likely to be involved. These controls can prevent a repeat while you continue streaming.
- Reduce off-channel contact. Review Chat Filters and your Whisper privacy setting. Blocking Whispers from strangers prevents people you do not know from initiating those conversations.
- Report qualifying conduct. Submit a Twitch report when the behavior violates the Community Guidelines. You do not need to warn the viewer first, and reporting can happen after you have already banned or timed out the account.
- Escalate a real-world danger. If the conduct makes you fear for your safety or the safety of your immediate family, contact local law enforcement immediately. Platform moderation is not a substitute for emergency assistance.
Which Twitch control should you use?
Controls differ in scope and in how much friction they create for ordinary viewers. Use the narrowest control that solves the immediate problem, then add broader safeguards if the behavior continues.
| Control | Scope | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Message deletion | One message | Removes the visible message from chat. | Fast and precise, but the account can post again. |
| Timeout | One account in your channel for a limited period | Stops that account from chatting temporarily. | Useful for a single outburst or while a moderator reviews context; it is not a permanent barrier. |
| Channel ban | One account in your channel | Prevents the account from participating in your chat until you change the action. | Strong protection for a repeat offender, but it does not by itself stop contact elsewhere on Twitch. |
| AutoMod | Incoming chat messages | Holds potentially inappropriate messages for moderator review before they appear publicly. | Can delay harmless messages and requires someone to review held content. |
| Blocked terms | Messages containing selected words or phrases | Filters specified language before it becomes visible according to your channel settings. | Works best for known terms; coded language, misspellings, and images may require other controls. |
| Chat verification | Users or account groups you choose | Requires additional verification before selected accounts can chat. | Adds friction for legitimate viewers, but can reduce disposable or newly created accounts. |
| Suspicious-user controls | Accounts Twitch identifies as suspicious | Provides extra moderation handling for accounts that meet Twitch’s suspicious-user criteria. | Requires moderator attention and may affect accounts that have not yet posted harmful content. |
| Chat Filters | Your viewing experience across Twitch chats | Hides selected categories of language from your own view. | Protects what you see; it does not change what other viewers receive or moderate your channel for them. |
Build a stronger chat barrier before the next stream
Twitch documents AutoMod, blocked terms, chat verification, and suspicious-user controls in its Chat Tools guidance. Twitch can revise dashboard labels, so look for the current moderation controls in your channel settings rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Use AutoMod as a review queue
AutoMod can hold potentially inappropriate chat messages for a moderator to approve or reject. This is useful when you want a person to make the final decision instead of allowing every message through immediately. Set the protection level appropriate to your community, then make sure you or a trusted moderator is available to review held messages. A held message is not an invitation to discuss the sender’s intent publicly; reject it and act on the account when the pattern warrants it.

Add blocked terms for recurring language
Blocked terms are most effective against words, phrases, slurs, or identifying details that repeatedly appear in your chat. Add the exact variants you are seeing, including common spacing or spelling changes, while remembering that no word list catches every coded reference. Review the list after an incident and remove terms that create unnecessary false positives for normal conversation.
Require chat verification selectively
Twitch lets you apply chat verification to all users or to selected groups, such as first-time chatters or accounts below an age threshold you choose. Start with the group connected to the abuse so established viewers are not burdened unnecessarily. If harassment arrives through a wave of new accounts, a broader requirement may be justified for the next stream; relax it when the threat has passed.
Use suspicious-user controls with human review
Suspicious-user controls provide another layer for accounts Twitch identifies as risky. Treat the resulting signals as moderation leads rather than automatic proof of misconduct. A moderator can examine the account’s behavior, hold or remove messages, and escalate to a timeout or ban when the conduct supports it.

A moderator should know which behavior triggers immediate deletion, timeout, or ban and how to contact you without announcing the decision in chat. Agree on a short code word or private message channel before going live. This lets a moderator act while you focus on the broadcast and prevents the viewer from controlling the pace of the response.

Limit unwanted contact outside public chat
Harassment may move from chat to Whispers or appear in other Twitch communities. Twitch’s Viewer Controls page documents two viewer-side defenses.
Turn on Chat Filters for language you do not want to see
Chat Filters can hide selected kinds of language across chats you view. They are useful when certain sexual, abusive, or otherwise distressing language is affecting your ability to monitor streams. Because this is a viewer-side filter, it changes your display rather than the channel’s moderation policy; keep using channel tools when you are the broadcaster.
Block Whispers from strangers
The Block Whispers from Strangers setting prevents strangers from initiating Whisper conversations. Twitch says this setting is enabled by default. Check it in Security & Privacy Settings, especially after changing accounts, devices, or privacy preferences. You can still choose to receive messages from people you trust while keeping unknown accounts from opening a private conversation.
Report behavior without putting yourself on trial
Reporting and channel moderation serve different purposes. A ban protects your channel immediately; a report gives Twitch information about conduct that may violate platform-wide rules. Use both when appropriate.

- Identify the conduct, not the person’s motive. Describe what was said or done, where it occurred, and why it was unwanted. Avoid guessing about intent when the observable behavior is enough.
- Include useful context. Supply the account name, approximate time, relevant messages, and whether the conduct continued after a timeout or ban. If several accounts were involved, explain the sequence without reposting offensive text unnecessarily.
- Do not wait for a warning to become valid. Twitch’s policy expressly allows a report before you tell the user to stop. If you did issue a warning, mention it as context, not as a prerequisite.
- Continue moderating while the report is pending. Remove new messages, time out or ban repeat accounts, and ask moderators to watch the channel. A report does not replace immediate channel protection.
Twitch’s guidelines are a living document. The reporting form and in-product labels may change, so follow the current report flow shown in your account while using the policy page as the rule reference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect private information during an incident
Do not repeat, display, or place on stream another person’s sensitive personal information, even when a viewer has leaked it. Twitch prohibits revealing sensitive personal information such as an address and prohibits sharing material that violates someone else’s reasonable expectation of privacy. The safest response is to remove the message, avoid reading the details aloud, hide the affected part of your screen, and report the account.
The same caution applies to your own information. Do not confirm an address, phone number, workplace, travel plan, family member’s identity, or other detail merely because a viewer claims to know it. Ask moderators to remove copies from chat and review overlays, alerts, panels, and browser sources for accidental exposure.

Move beyond platform tools when a viewer makes a credible threat, publishes your location, attempts stalking, or suggests immediate harm to you or your family. Twitch advises contacting local law enforcement immediately if someone’s behavior makes you fear for your own safety or your immediate family’s safety.
Best Value
- End or pause the stream if staying live reveals your location or routine.
- Tell a trusted person what happened and avoid meeting or responding to the threatening account.
- Preserve relevant account names, timestamps, messages, and links for investigators, while keeping private information off your broadcast.
- Use emergency services when there is an immediate danger; do not wait for a platform response.
Why good-faith moderation is the right response
Streamers sometimes worry that showing abusive messages or third-party content will make them responsible for it. Twitch addresses this in its Community Guidelines: "We will not suspend broadcasters that we find to be acting in good-faith (including by using tools such as AutoMod, timeouts, and channel bans) to remove abuse appearing from third parties and external sources."
Good-faith action means taking reasonable steps to mitigate harassing material that appears on your stream. It does not require you to catch every message instantly or to confront the sender. Configure protections, use moderators when available, remove material when you see it, and report serious violations.
Document the incident without amplifying it
After the stream, write a short private incident log. Record the date, channel, account names, approximate times, action taken, and whether the behavior moved from chat to Whispers or another account. Keep the original evidence in a secure location and share it only with Twitch, law enforcement, or people who need it to help you.
Recommended Free Tools
Review the log for patterns: repeated phrases, new accounts arriving together, attempts to pull you into private conversation, or references to information that should not be public. Those patterns help you choose between a narrow blocked term, stronger verification, additional moderator coverage, or a temporary break from streaming.
A prevention checklist for your next broadcast
- Choose at least one person who can moderate when you are live.
- Confirm that AutoMod is active and that held messages have a clear review owner.
- Update blocked terms using the language and spelling variants that have appeared in your channel.
- Decide whether first-time chatters, newer accounts, or another selected group should complete chat verification.
- Review suspicious-user controls and agree on how moderators will handle their alerts.
- Check Chat Filters and confirm that Block Whispers from Strangers remains enabled in Security & Privacy Settings.
- Keep personal schedules, addresses, phone numbers, family details, and live location out of overlays and chat commands.
- Prepare a short moderator rule: remove the message first, then discuss escalation privately.
- Know which local emergency number to use if an online interaction becomes a physical safety concern.
Quick decisions for common situations
| Situation | Immediate action | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| A single insulting or sexual message | Delete it and use a timeout if needed. | Add a blocked term only if the language recurs; report if it violates Twitch’s rules. |
| Repeated comments after a timeout | Ban the account. | Report the pattern and preserve account and timing details. |
| A wave of new accounts | Use AutoMod, suspicious-user controls, and tighter verification. | Have moderators review held messages and relax restrictions when the wave ends. |
| Unwanted private messages | Do not reply; block the contact route and review Whisper privacy. | Report qualifying conduct and keep evidence off stream. |
| A leaked address or other sensitive detail | Remove it without repeating it. | Check all on-screen sources and report; contact law enforcement if the disclosure creates a real-world safety risk. |
| A credible threat to you or family | Pause or end the stream and move to a safe place. | Contact local law enforcement immediately and preserve evidence securely. |
Keep the settings current
Twitch labels and dashboard locations can change, and the Community Guidelines identify themselves as a living document. Before an important broadcast, open Twitch’s current Community Guidelines, Chat Tools, and Viewer Controls pages and verify that the controls available in your account match your plan. The central rule remains stable: you can protect your channel first, report without confronting the viewer, and seek immediate real-world help when the risk leaves Twitch.
