Make an ordered playlist, use stream copy only when the inputs are compatible, otherwise normalize or transcode them, and send the feed to YouTube using the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old; check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio. - A VPS with the video files available locally and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the chosen stream bitrate.
- FFmpeg, including
ffprobe, installed on the VPS. - A YouTube Live Control Room stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a repository, screenshots, logs, or shell history.
YouTube’s encoder guidance, verified on October 3, 2026, supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Check the files: MP4 and MKV are containers
MP4 and MKV describe containers, not the video and audio codecs inside them. Two files with different extensions might contain compatible streams; two files with the same extension might not. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects compatible streams, codecs, and time bases across the inputs. Inspect the files before building the playlist.
Inspect video and audio streams
Run ffprobe on each file, or at minimum on every distinct type of file in the set, including files with different audio tracks or subtitles:

Confirm that the first video and audio tracks you intend to use exist in every file. The example stream-copy command below maps the first video and first audio stream; it must be changed if your files use another layout.
Choose stream copy or normalization
- Use stream copy when the relevant streams are compatible and the output codecs are suitable for YouTube. FFmpeg’s
-c copypasses compressed streams through without decoding or re-encoding, so it uses less CPU and does not add another lossy encoding generation. It cannot resize, filter, or convert codecs, and compatibility problems can make it fail. FFmpeg documentation - Normalize or transcode first when the files differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layout, or required output settings. Convert them to a common set of streams before concatenating. Transcoding requires decoding and re-encoding, uses more CPU, and can reduce quality; benchmark a representative segment on the VPS and leave CPU headroom.
Create an ordered playlist
Put compatible media files in a directory accessible to the account that will run FFmpeg. Create a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat with entries in playback order:

file 'part-03.mp4'The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition. Use simple relative paths where possible. Paths containing spaces or special characters need appropriate quoting or escaping; the concat demuxer’s safe-path behavior rejects unsafe paths or directives by default. Know what concatenation does—and does not do
The concat demuxer reads the listed files sequentially and adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts after the preceding file’s duration. That is not the same as editing the files into a guaranteed seamless sequence. Unequal audio and video lengths, inaccurate duration metadata, or incompatible timing can create gaps or artifacts at transitions. Test representative transitions. If a source’s duration metadata is wrong, the list supports a duration directive, but validate any adjustment before relying on it.
Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. The key lets YouTube identify and accept the encoder feed; keep it private. YouTube encoder setup
- Choose the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Do not assume the default RTMP address is interchangeable with the RTMPS address: use the exact endpoint shown for your stream. YouTube: Stream using custom settings
Store the URL and key in a private configuration or environment variable rather than hard-coding them into a public script. Avoid commands that expose the secret in shell history, process listings, or logs.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Match output settings to the source, the VPS’s encoding capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance. For standard SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit as advanced settings. Its guidance recommends CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, its recommended advanced settings include 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo. Audio and protocol overhead add to the video bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping total bitrate at no more than 80% of available upload capacity—20% headroom. The VPS must sustain that outbound rate continuously; a provider’s advertised port speed alone does not establish sustained throughput. Check the endpoint syntax and use the exact URL and key arrangement supplied in Live Control Room; some endpoint values already include path components. Confirm the stream maps exist for every input, and adjust or omit maps when track layouts differ. When transcoding is necessary
Replace -c copy with explicit video and audio encoders and settings if the sources need conversion. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conventional SDR target, but set dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval to match the applicable YouTube guidance and your VPS capacity. Do not treat a generic command as a substitute for the current settings table. Transcoding is computationally demanding; test a representative segment before scheduling a long broadcast.
Make continuous playback and recovery deliberate
The command above reads the playlist once. It does not by itself loop forever, restart after a dropped connection, or guarantee unattended recovery. Configure looping or playlist rotation for your installed FFmpeg version and test end-of-list behavior, file transitions, and what happens after a network interruption. FFmpeg documents recovery behavior for its FIFO muxer, but that is a separate configuration route—not automatic recovery supplied by the command above. FFmpeg formats documentation
Test before going public and monitor the VPS
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream and include movement and audio representative of the actual playlist. YouTube recommends testing before a live event. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Check that the feed appears in Live Control Room preview and review stream-health messages before making the broadcast public.
- Listen for audio, watch picture quality, and inspect transitions between MP4 and MKV files.
- On the VPS, monitor sustained network egress, CPU use if transcoding, and disk reads. Investigate dropped frames or buffering before relying on a long run.
