But YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; do not count on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast becoming one complete saved VOD. What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has live streaming enabled, and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can play the gaming recording and encode the broadcast.
- A stable internet connection and enough computer capacity to play the video and run OBS continuously.
- Permission to broadcast the game footage and all included audio. YouTube’s platform rules apply, and publisher permissions can differ by game and soundtrack.
YouTube supports encoder-based gameplay streams. OBS sends the video and audio to YouTube; it does not make a local computer session run indefinitely by itself.
Set up a YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live. Create a new stream, or use Manage → Schedule stream if you want an upcoming watch page. Set the title, privacy, category, and other stream details in Studio. YouTube allows scheduled broadcasts to use new or reused settings; check the selected settings before publishing.
- Choose how OBS connects. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube and connect your account, or choose the stream-key connection option and enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The precise labels can vary by OBS version and connection method. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and the OBS streaming guide cover these connection methods.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, video, or public chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before the next broadcast.
- Set up the VOD source. In OBS, add a source that plays the recording and arrange the scene, overlays, and audio you need. For PC gameplay, use the appropriate game or display capture source if you are broadcasting live gameplay; for an existing recording, use a media source or another playback method that suits your file. Confirm that the video and audio play through to OBS’s preview and meters.
- For console footage, route the source into the streaming computer. A capture device may be needed when the console’s HDMI output must enter the OBS computer. It is not required for every setup, such as PC gameplay captured directly on the same machine.
- Start sending the stream. Click Start Streaming in OBS, then check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming preview and status. For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube’s prompts and press Go Live if the broadcast is not set to start automatically. OBS documents that scheduled-stream behavior depends on settings such as Auto-start; do not assume that sending video from OBS always makes the public broadcast live.
Keep the VOD playing and monitor the broadcast
For a VOD to remain on air, the playback source must continue, OBS must keep sending data, and the computer and network must stay available. Check the OBS connection indicator, YouTube’s preview, the source playback, and the audio levels after launch and during the run. A one-time successful start is not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
Use a test broadcast or an unlisted stream first to catch black video, missing audio, looping gaps, or an incorrect privacy setting before relying on the public broadcast. If you schedule a stream, verify whether you need to start it manually in Live Control Room. DVR rewind is finite and varies with configuration and device, so do not promise viewers they can rewind to any point in a long broadcast.

Plan separately for the live feed and the saved VOD
A continuously live channel and a complete saved recording are different goals. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be preserved as one complete archive. If a reliable saved VOD matters, plan broadcasts shorter than 12 hours, verify each archive after the stream ends, and schedule transitions between them. This follows YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold; it is not a guarantee about how every longer stream will be handled. YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 live-feed model, but that does not mean ordinary OBS users have a special 24/7 switch or that their local computer will remain online indefinitely. API-level controls for recording, DVR, automatic start, and automatic stop are not settings every OBS user needs to change. Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Streaming a recording rather than playing live does not remove rights or policy obligations. YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and may be removed or restricted. A game’s permission for ordinary gameplay videos does not establish blanket permission to retransmit every cutscene, soundtrack, or recording around the clock. Check the publisher’s terms and the rights for the specific music and footage in your VOD before broadcasting.
Common problems and fixes
- You cannot start a stream: verify the channel, enable live streaming, and check for restrictions. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive OBS video: confirm the selected YouTube account or server URL and stream key, and check that OBS reports a connection. If the key was exposed, replace it.
- The preview appears, but the public stream has not started: check the Live Control Room for a required manual Go Live action and review the scheduled broadcast’s Auto-start setting.
- There is no game or recording sound: check the selected source, OBS audio meters, and playback volume; monitor the preview before leaving the stream unattended.
- The VOD is not complete: a continuous session over 12 hours is outside YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance. For archive-focused programming, end and verify shorter broadcasts.
- The stream drops during a long run: check OBS’s connection status, the computer’s power and sleep settings, source playback, and the network. The local workflow depends on each of these remaining functional.
