Test privately or as an unlisted stream, confirm the preview and stream health, and only then start the public broadcast. Check channel eligibility and rights to every recording before you go live.
Before you begin: check eligibility, timing and rights
Confirm that the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Users must be at least 16 to live stream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Confirm permission for every part of the video
A devotional theme does not make a recording free to rebroadcast. Rights may apply separately to the composition, performance, recording and video footage. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. For licensed material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube notes that a stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted, even when you hold a license or territorial restrictions apply. Keep permission records for the exact material you plan to use. Read YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, choose its visibility and enter the event details.
- For an encoder stream, use the stream settings shown in Live Control Room. Copy the current stream key and the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP address by default; select the RTMPS address for the encrypted connection. The exact endpoint and key shown for your stream are authoritative; do not assume a fixed URL.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, public repository or log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
- Set up at least two hours before the event if possible. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time so you can confirm that the signal reaches Live Control Room and appears in preview.
For current setup instructions, see YouTube’s encoder live-streaming guide.
#1 Best Overall
Choose video, bitrate and audio settings
For conventional SDR ingest over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance calls for constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit; its advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations before the event, as platform guidance can change.
| Output | H.264 minimum bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed H.264 figures, not a guarantee that a particular connection or file will stream smoothly. For a devotional video, 720p30 or 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point when it matches the source quality and available upload capacity. This is a practical choice based on YouTube’s bitrate table, not a platform requirement. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution source just to select a higher output resolution.

Send the video file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg processes an input and writes an output; for this workflow, the output is an FLV stream sent to the RTMPS address and key from Live Control Room. The example below is illustrative, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build, file or YouTube event. Confirm that your build includes the necessary protocols and codecs, then test with your own media.
Recommended Free Tools
- Replace
input.mp4with the path to your video, and replace the example output settings with the resolution, frame rate and bitrate appropriate to the source and connection. - Replace
RTMPS_URLandSTREAM_KEYwith the exact values displayed in Live Control Room. Keep the key out of any public file or shared terminal transcript. - Run a private or unlisted rehearsal and check Live Control Room before using the command for a public event.
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
The example encodes H.264 at 8 Mbps and 30 fps, with a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps), and AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its video bitrate is only an example aligned with YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30; select settings that fit the actual output resolution, source and uplink. YouTube’s specified two-second keyframe interval is the target. FFmpeg option behavior can depend on the build and encoder, so verify the outgoing stream in Live Control Room rather than assuming the command succeeded as intended.

The -re option reads a file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection, and documents FLV output in its RTMP protocol example. Review the official FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation for details and build-specific support.
Test the connection and monitor the broadcast
Check upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between total outgoing bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity, and other people or devices on the same connection may use bandwidth. Test the actual uplink from the place where FFmpeg will run, including any other concurrent uploads. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Rehearse before the scheduled event
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that Live Control Room receives the signal and displays a preview.
- Check that the audio is audible and synchronized, the picture moves as intended, and the selected video quality is appropriate.
- Check access from the channel’s watch page and a mobile device, using the same visibility settings planned for the event.
- If you are saving a local archive, confirm that the file is being written and growing as expected.
- Review stream health and any warnings in Live Control Room before starting the event.
YouTube recommends running a test stream, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, checking preview and monitoring audio and video throughout. A disruption in connectivity can break the broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s encoder guide and encoder settings guidance.

If viewers mainly watch a devotional programme rather than interact in real time, low latency may matter less than stable playback. YouTube cautions that lower latency can mean more buffering. If live chat or immediate audience interaction is central, choose latency settings accordingly and rehearse them. DVR, when enabled, lets viewers pause and rewind. Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Wrong endpoint or key, an FFmpeg build without required protocol support, or the encoder has not connected. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key again from the stream’s Live Control Room settings; check FFmpeg output for connection or protocol errors and confirm the build supports the required codecs and protocols. |
| Buffering, dropped frames or an unstable feed | The outgoing bitrate is too close to or above available upload capacity, or the connection is disrupted or shared. | Measure the actual upload connection, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce output bitrate or resolution if necessary. Check other devices using the connection. |
| Video or audio is missing or incorrect | Input media, codec, output mapping or settings may not match what the stream needs. | Inspect the file and FFmpeg errors; test the same file and command in an unlisted rehearsal. Confirm the preview, audible synchronized audio and intended motion before the event. |
| The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder | YouTube may have detected third-party material, including in a devotional recording. | Review rights for the exact recording, composition, performance and footage. If licensed, ask the rights owner to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist; retain permission records. |
| The stream does not start at the planned time | Live streaming may not be enabled yet, or the channel may not meet eligibility requirements. | Verify the channel and check for restrictions. Enable live streaming early; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. |
