First confirm the channel can go live, create the event and copy its stream URL and key, configure the encoder, then test the preview and monitor the broadcast. Clear the music and other content rights before streaming; YouTube access does not itself establish that the station has permission to distribute its programming on YouTube.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must have had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time encoder activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of the planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains eligibility and activation.
- Access to the station’s actual programme audio feed, and an encoder that can send that audio with a visual source to YouTube.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
- Rights to distribute the music, recordings, artwork, and any other third-party material in the stream, plus confirmation of applicable local requirements.
Set up the radio stream in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming: In YouTube Studio, confirm live streaming is available for the channel. If this is its first encoder broadcast, allow for the possible activation delay of up to 24 hours noted in YouTube’s setup guidance.
- Create the event: Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event.
- Protect the stream key: Treat it like a password. YouTube says the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in the live settings before broadcasting.
- Configure the encoder: Choose YouTube as the destination, enter the stream URL and key, select the station feed as the audio input, and add a visual source. Encoder choices include software running on a computer and standalone hardware; YouTube describes both in its encoder overview.
- Test before going public: Send a private or unlisted test, inspect the Live Control Room preview, verify the audio and picture, and review stream health. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and monitoring during the event. Go public only once the test is clean.
Choose the audio and visual presentation
Use the station programme feed, not an unrelated microphone
For a radio simulcast, the encoder’s audio input should be the station’s actual programme output. Listen to the encoder preview and check for silence, clipping, unexpected pauses, or audio that drifts out of sync with the visual. If the encoder or audio system exposes level controls, avoid overloading the input; make a test recording or private test stream before the scheduled broadcast.

Choose a visual that you have permission to use
YouTube receives a video stream as well as audio. A simple station-branded still is a low-production option; a waveform or now-playing graphic can also identify the broadcast. Use only artwork, photographs, logos, or video that the station is entitled to display. A visual slate is not a substitute for cleared audio rights.

YouTube lists microphones, webcams, headsets, and other equipment as optional production examples; the available guidance does not establish that any new equipment is required to relay an existing online radio feed.

Set encoder quality for a reliable connection
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance as the platform baseline, then choose a video quality your sustained upload connection can support. A high peak speed is not enough if the connection regularly fluctuates; run a speed test and leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload rate.

Clear music rights and check Pakistan-specific obligations
The station—not YouTube—must have the rights needed for its live content. YouTube’s live-stream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” The terms also require compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements in the territory of the live stream. Read the YouTube Terms of Service and confirm that the station’s rights cover this particular use and distribution.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Detection can lead to a warning or replacement of the picture, interruption, or termination. Even where a station has a licence, YouTube says the rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID to prevent interruptions. Ask the relevant rights holder or distributor to confirm the channel’s status before relying on a licence alone. If the stream is archived, YouTube notes that Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends.

The Pakistan-specific approvals, registrations, public-performance rights, recording rights, and other permissions that apply depend on the station, its content, rights chain, and distribution. The available official YouTube guidance does not establish which Pakistani requirements apply to a particular station. Confirm current obligations with the relevant Pakistani authorities and rights holders before broadcasting; neither YouTube eligibility nor an existing internet-radio authorization should be treated as proof that YouTube distribution is cleared.

- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification, restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Allow up to 24 hours for initial encoder activation.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the event’s stream URL and key are entered correctly and that the encoder is connected to the intended event. Keep the key private; replace it if it may have been exposed.
- The preview is silent or too loud: Confirm that the encoder is receiving the station programme feed rather than the wrong input. Listen to the preview and adjust the audio source level to correct silence or clipping.
- The picture or audio buffers: Review Live Control Room stream health and retest upload capacity. Lower the selected stream quality or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain consistently.
- The stream is interrupted by a copyright warning: Stop and identify the detected material. Check the rights for the music and visual content, and ask the rights holder whether the channel must be allowlisted through Content ID. A licence does not necessarily prevent automated interruption.
- The archived stream receives a claim: Review the claim after the broadcast and resolve it through the applicable rights process. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends.
Keep Live Control Room open during the broadcast. Watch for buffering and audio interruptions, and verify that the station feed remains present rather than assuming that a successful start means it will stay healthy.
