How to Stream an Internet Radio Station to YouTube With a Raspberry Pi

You can use a Raspberry Pi to relay an internet radio station to YouTube by receiving the station’s audio, pairing it with a visual, encoding both as a live audiovisual stream, and sending that stream to the ingestion URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. You need permission to rebroadcast the station’s programming; a publicly accessible audio URL does not grant that right.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi with a supported operating system, reliable network access and the power supply appropriate to its model. The exact board and setup depend on what you already own; official Raspberry Pi documentation covers model-specific setup and power guidance at Raspberry Pi documentation.
  • The station’s actual stream URL and details: protocol, authentication, codec, and any required request headers or user agent. These details vary by station; confirm them with its operator or published stream documentation.
  • An encoder that can receive the station audio, provide a video layer, and send the combined feed to YouTube. The exact commands depend on the station URL, operating system and installed encoder, so there is no reliable universal command for every Pi and station.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus an event or stream configured in Live Control Room.
  • Authorization to retransmit the station’s audio on YouTube in the relevant territories. Confirm this with the station or rights holder before broadcasting.

You do not need an analog capture card simply to receive audio delivered over the internet. Raspberry Pi models support audio output over USB and HDMI, but a 3.5 mm audio jack is model-dependent; the incoming station feed in this setup is network audio, not an analog input.

Choose the YouTube ingest method

RTMPS: the usual starting point

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, for compatible encoders. Its standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Use the ingestion URL and key shown for your stream in Live Control Room, rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an old guide. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes ingestion addresses, stream names and supported ingestion types.

HLS: for workflows that need it

HLS can suit an encoder or workflow that specifically requires it, but it has stricter packaging requirements and higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide requires muxed audio and video in M2TS, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and media-playlist segments of one to four seconds. Check the guide’s playlist, HTTPS and segment requirements against the encoder you plan to use.

Set up the Pi and confirm the audio source

  1. Install and update Raspberry Pi OS. Follow the instructions for your board in the Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
  2. Connect power and networking. Use a reliable network connection and the power supply specified for the board. For an uninterrupted broadcast, the Pi needs to remain powered and connected for the duration of the stream.
  3. Verify the station feed. Confirm the exact URL and whether the feed requires authentication, a particular protocol, or extra request headers. Test that the encoder can receive and decode it before building the live output.
  4. Pick a video layer. YouTube’s regular encoder workflow expects an audiovisual feed. Pair the radio audio with an appropriate still image or a simple animated visual; make sure you have the rights to use any image or video you include.

Create a YouTube live event and protect the stream key

  1. Enable live streaming on the channel if it has not already been enabled, then open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the event.
  2. Copy the protocol-specific ingestion URL and stream key shown for that event into the encoder. Check whether the encoder asks for the URL and key in separate fields or expects the key appended as a stream name; follow its interface and YouTube’s displayed configuration.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot or public repository. If it is exposed, reset it using YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance at Manage live stream settings.
  4. Configure the encoder to send the station audio and chosen visual together. Confirm that the audio is mapped into the output and that the destination is the URL and key for the intended event.

Choose audio, video and bandwidth settings

For standard RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio, stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations before configuring an encoder, because platform recommendations can change.

Example video setting YouTube-published H.264 bitrate guidance
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps recommended; 0.4 Mbps minimum

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a performance guarantee for a particular Raspberry Pi. The board, encoder build, visual complexity and network all affect what is sustainable. Start conservatively and confirm the encoder can maintain the chosen output before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Measure upload bandwidth, not just download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving about 20% of bandwidth above the stream bitrate. If the connection cannot provide that headroom consistently, reduce the video resolution or bitrate.

Test and monitor before broadcasting

  1. Run a controlled test, such as an unlisted event, using the same station feed and visual you intend to broadcast.
  2. Check that the station audio is audible, the visual appears, and the audio and video remain synchronized.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages in Live Control Room and inspect the encoder’s output. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream.
  4. Check upload capacity under the expected network load. If health warnings appear, reduce the output bitrate or resolution and test again.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API health diagnostics include issues such as low bitrate, mismatched frame rate, unsupported audio codec, incorrect audio sample rate and no audio stream. Use the specific health message to narrow down the problem.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube reports no audio, or the stream is silent Confirm the station feed is being received and decoded, and that its audio is mapped into the outgoing audiovisual stream. Check YouTube stream health for a no-audio-stream warning or codec and sample-rate diagnostics.
The stream buffers or becomes unstable Measure upload bandwidth, retain headroom, and lower the video resolution or bitrate if necessary. Test again with the expected load.
The encoder cannot connect Confirm the protocol, ingestion URL and key against Live Control Room. For an RTMPS TLS error, verify that the URL uses rtmps and that the port matches YouTube’s and the encoder’s guidance.
YouTube rejects an HLS stream Check that the output uses muxed M2TS audio and video, AAC audio, a closed GOP and compliant playlists and one-to-four-second segments. Confirm the encoder uses the required HTTPS requests.
A music match warning interrupts the live stream Stop or replace the matched content, check YouTube Studio for restrictions, and resolve rights with the station or rights holder. A license may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel.

Copyright is a broadcast requirement, not an encoder setting

A station’s public stream URL does not itself authorize retransmission. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and a match can lead to a placeholder image, warnings, interruption or termination. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and platform terms place responsibility on the broadcaster to secure the rights needed for the content, including music-related rights. Confirm permission before going live; if a match occurs, use YouTube Studio’s restriction details and contact the relevant rights holder.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded programming live without leaving a Pi or computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. It plays uploaded videos rather than receiving a live camera or radio station feed, so it is not a direct replacement for relaying a station URL.
