A playlist file points to the station’s audio stream; it is not the audio itself, and it does not give you permission to rebroadcast the station. Get the necessary authorization before going live.
What you need before you start
- The station’s direct stream address or an M3U/PLS playlist that points to it.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer. OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries; match VLC’s architecture to OBS (for example, use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS). OBS Media Sources documentation
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live. Check current YouTube Help for account eligibility and activation timing rather than relying on older setup instructions.
- A visual element you have permission to use, such as a still image or looping visual, to accompany the radio audio.
- Permission to rebroadcast the station’s audio, including any music and other material in the stream, for your intended territory and use.
Find the station’s stream URL or playlist
Start on the station’s own “Listen,” “Streams,” or similar page. The station’s public webpage and the address that delivers its audio are different URLs. Look for a direct stream link or a downloadable M3U/PLS playlist; the playlist is a small text file containing the actual stream address, not a recording of the broadcast. 72FM’s guide to finding a radio stream URL
Check what the playlist contains
An M3U commonly starts with #EXTM3U, may include an #EXTINF line with a display name, and then lists the stream URL. PLS uses a different text layout. You can open a playlist in a text editor to inspect whether it contains a plausible stream address, but do not publish private or tokenized URLs.
M3U8 can refer to UTF-8 text in the M3U family; it is also the extension commonly used for HLS media playlists. The extension alone does not tell you whether a file is a station directory entry or an HLS playlist. If a link stops working, possible causes include an expired temporary token, a changed station server, geographic restrictions, or a format the player does not support. Obtain a fresh link from the station where possible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Load the playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so OBS can use the VLC libraries.
- In OBS, select or create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video. If that source is unavailable, confirm VLC is installed and restart OBS.
- In the VLC Video source properties, add the M3U or PLS file to the playlist. You can also add a supported direct stream address as a playlist item.
- Enable playlist looping if you want OBS to repeat items in a playlist. The VLC Video source also exposes network-caching controls; if playback buffers, adjust caching cautiously and test again, since more buffering can increase the delay before audio plays.
- Confirm that the source is playing and that OBS’s audio mixer shows activity. Listen to the audio through OBS monitoring or another permitted check before broadcasting.
OBS documents the VLC Video source as supporting playlists and looping, with network-caching controls. OBS Media Sources documentation
Build a YouTube-ready scene and connect the broadcast
Add a visual
Add a still image, station artwork, or a looping visual to the scene, and make sure it fills the canvas without obscuring important information. Use an image or video you own or are authorized to use. A radio stream with only audio is not a complete video scene; a static or looping visual is a straightforward option. Set up YouTube Live
- In OBS, connect the Google/YouTube account or select the option to enter a YouTube stream key, following the current YouTube and OBS prompts. The precise labels may change.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and verify that OBS is sending to the intended channel and event.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel; reset it if it is exposed.
- Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube’s preview and stream status before making the broadcast public or starting the event.
Account eligibility and activation timing can change, so consult YouTube Help for current requirements. The OBS community’s YouTube setup guide can help orient you to the workflow, but current YouTube settings take precedence. OBS community guide
Use the right ingestion protocol
For the basic OBS workflow, use the connection method offered by the current YouTube and OBS setup. Do not apply HLS-specific segment requirements to a standard RTMP setup. If you specifically configure HLS ingestion, follow YouTube’s current HLS instructions: it specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and supported codecs. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz audio sampling and 128 Kbps stereo audio. These details apply to HLS, not universally to every OBS broadcast. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream

Get permission before rebroadcasting
A working stream URL only lets a player receive the station’s audio; it does not authorize you to transmit that audio to YouTube. Permission requirements depend on the station, the music and other content it carries, your territory, and applicable agreements. Ask the station or relevant rights holders what uses they authorize, and do not assume that publicly accessible audio is free to rebroadcast. The URL-finding guide is technical guidance, not a licensing authority. 72FM’s guide
Choose between a desktop setup and unattended operation
| Approach | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on a desktop | Load the station playlist in OBS, compose a scene, and start the YouTube broadcast manually. | Graphical setup is approachable, but the computer and connection must remain available while you stream; you may need to monitor playback and restart it if interrupted. |
| FFmpeg on a Linux VPS | Use a server and FFmpeg to combine a radio stream with a still image or video and send it to YouTube. | Can suit unattended operation, but requires command-line and server administration and adds hosting expense. It is optional, not required for the basic OBS workflow. |
| StreamNeo cloud service | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. | It is for uploaded videos, not live playback from a station’s URL or a camera. Confirm that your rights allow uploading and rebroadcasting the audio. One slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, and the same included capabilities on every plan; billing duration differs. |
OBS is the graphical desktop option; FFmpeg on a VPS is a more technical route for continuous operation. RadioTech Studio’s guide

Troubleshoot common failures
- OBS does not show VLC Video: Install VLC that matches OBS’s architecture, then restart OBS and try adding the source again.
- The playlist opens but audio does not play: Check the direct stream address in the playlist, request a current link from the station, and check for a token expiry, region restriction, server change, or unsupported format.
- Audio starts, then buffers or stops: Check the network connection and station stream availability; test the VLC source’s network-caching control. A station-side interruption may require a fresh source or manual recovery.
- YouTube receives video but no audio: Confirm the VLC source appears in OBS’s audio mixer and that its level is not muted; listen to the scene before restarting the broadcast.
- YouTube preview does not appear: Confirm the selected broadcast, destination, and stream key. Check YouTube’s live status and current channel eligibility requirements.
- The stream is delayed: HLS has higher latency than RTMP due to segment-based delivery. This is an HLS-specific behavior, not proof that the playlist itself is faulty.
