Use OBS Studio on the Windows mini PC to combine the station’s audio with a still image or simple visual, then send that encoded video to YouTube Live. If the station offers a compatible stream URL, try it in OBS’s VLC Video source; otherwise, play the station in a Windows app and capture that app’s audio. Test the complete setup in YouTube’s preview before going public. Compatibility and rebroadcast rights depend on the particular station.
What you need before setting up
- A Windows mini PC with OBS Studio installed. No specific minimum CPU, memory, or graphics specification is established for this workflow; the PC must be able to run OBS and encode your chosen output. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” YouTube’s live streaming tips offer general guidance, not a guarantee for every mini PC.
- The station’s stream URL, if it provides one, or access to a Windows player or browser that can play the station.
- A station image, logo, or simple graphic to provide the video picture. A radio audio feed alone does not create a complete video scene.
- A YouTube channel enabled for livestreaming, plus its stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Permission to rebroadcast the station’s audio and use any included branding or artwork on YouTube in the territories where you plan to stream.
A publicly accessible radio stream is not, by itself, permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s general copyright guidance does not determine whether a particular station’s feed is cleared for your use; check with the station or relevant rights holders before going live.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the key
- Verify your YouTube channel and enable live streaming before the planned broadcast. YouTube says activation for a first livestream can take up to 24 hours. Its live-streaming tips also state that a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder livestream setup and live-streaming tips.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast and locate its stream URL and stream key. Exact labels can change, so follow the current controls shown in your account.
- Treat the stream key like a password: enter it only in OBS’s streaming settings, and do not expose it in screenshots, public configuration files, or tutorials. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube explains the key’s purpose and handling in its stream key guidance.
Build a scene in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast.
- Add an Image source for a station-approved logo, cover image, or branded graphic. Keep the picture within the canvas and avoid artwork you do not have permission to use.
- Add and test the radio audio using one of the methods below. Arrange the image and any other visual sources so the output is not an unintended blank canvas.
OBS scenes can combine image, media, and audio sources. Its sources guide describes the available source types.

Choose how OBS receives the station audio
Try a compatible station URL in VLC Video source
- Install VLC, then in OBS add a VLC Video source and enter the station’s stream URL or playlist. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Start playback and confirm that the audio is audible and the OBS Audio Mixer meters move. VLC Video source supports playlists and extended media support, but an unspecified station URL is not guaranteed to work.
OBS’s built-in Media Source documentation describes local audio and video files; do not assume that Media Source accepts every online radio URL. Check the OBS media sources guide for the distinction and the VLC Video source guide for its requirements.

Capture a Windows player or browser
- If the station plays in a Windows application, add an Application Audio Capture source and select the player window. This source is available on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11.
- Play the station and verify its signal in OBS’s Audio Mixer. Some application audio outputs may not be compatible; a virtual-cable routing workaround may be needed.
See the OBS Application Audio Capture guide for setup details and limitations. These two input routes are alternatives to test against the actual station feed, not universal guarantees. Consider whether the URL is accessible without credentials or regional restrictions, whether the player’s audio can be captured, and whether your chosen setup will resume after a restart.
Prevent duplicate or missing audio
- While the station is playing, watch the OBS Audio Mixer meters and listen to the output in the YouTube preview during your test.
- If you use a scene-level Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source, disable that same device as a global audio device in OBS settings to avoid echo.
- If you use Application Audio Capture, OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio to prevent duplicate audio.
- If the meters do not move, check that the right player or device is selected, that the station is actually playing, and that the source is not muted. If the meters move but YouTube is silent, check the preview and OBS audio routing before starting the public broadcast.

Set the encoder output and connect OBS
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. Depending on the OBS version and configuration, you may also need to select or enter the server URL shown by YouTube.
- In Settings > Output, choose an encoding configuration your mini PC can sustain. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio and constant bitrate encoding. A simple still-image radio stream does not need unnecessary visual complexity, but select settings based on the PC’s encoding capacity and the desired output.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced recommendations list 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the current requirements and recommendations.
- Make sure your outgoing bitrate fits the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom; do not treat the full measured upload speed as available for the stream. Its network guidance explains this recommendation.
The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a minimum mini PC specification or a single suitable video bitrate for every setup. Choose an output the machine and connection can sustain, then validate it in a test rather than assuming the same settings work everywhere.

Test, preview, and start the broadcast
- Start OBS streaming and check that the YouTube Live Control Room receives a preview. Confirm the image is framed correctly and the radio audio is audible.
- Run a short private or otherwise appropriate test before the public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement to the planned stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream health messages and OBS’s audio meters. If health warnings appear, investigate the cause before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
- Once the test is clean and you are ready, start or schedule the public broadcast through Live Control Room. Continue monitoring the stream and the audio source.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend previewing and monitoring, and OBS’s quick start guide recommends a short test.

Do you need a dedicated mini PC?
No specific mini PC model or minimum hardware configuration is established for this setup. An existing Windows PC may be adequate if it can run OBS and encode the chosen output reliably. A dedicated mini PC is an optional way to keep the encoder separate from everyday work, not a requirement; test the actual machine and connection before depending on it for a long broadcast.
