Before going live, confirm your rights, test the stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
What the setup does—and what you need to decide first
Liquidsoap manages the audio source and can send an RTMP output to YouTube Live using FFmpeg encoding. The VPS runs that software in the cloud, so the station does not need to leave a local computer running solely to keep the encoder online. YouTube receives a video stream, so an audio-only station also needs a visual component, such as a static image or other station-approved visual.

First decide how audio will reach Liquidsoap. The configuration differs depending on whether you are capturing an authorized existing station stream, contributing a live studio feed, or playing a station-owned playlist. Consider who controls each source, how reliable it is, its latency, and whether live studio programming must switch automatically to scheduled programming. Do not assume that a playlist, studio feed, and online radio stream can all be used interchangeably.
Check music and broadcast rights before configuring the stream
Confirm that the station has permission to transmit the actual audio on YouTube in the territories where it will be available. That includes checking applicable rights for the music, recordings, performers, and any broadcast or supplied feed. Keep the licenses and permissions in writing. This setup guide does not determine Indian copyright law or whether a particular station’s license covers online streaming.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted live broadcasts. A match can lead YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the broadcaster; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party material, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Having a license and being allowlisted are separate matters: a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. YouTube also lists restrictions that can disable live streaming, including a live stream matching another copyrighted broadcast or an active live stream receiving a copyright strike.
Choose a VPS for the actual encoding workload
Pick a Linux VPS after deciding what it must do. A server receiving an already encoded station stream and adding a simple visual may have a different workload from one encoding video continuously or handling additional listener delivery. Compare plans against the CPU capacity needed by your chosen encoder, memory, included traffic or egress, server region relative to the station and YouTube ingestion, recovery features, and the current total price.

VPS pricing depends on configuration. DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing page, verified 25 August 2026, describes configuration-dependent rates; it does not establish a cheapest suitable plan for this station. Check current prices and terms directly before choosing a provider. Estimate traffic from the intended continuous output and account for any separate audience-facing audio service. Do not pay for capacity based on a generic “radio VPS” label without checking the actual workload.

- Prepare the source. Make the authorized station stream, studio feed, or station-owned playlist available to Liquidsoap. Use an input configuration appropriate to that source and plan what should happen if it becomes unavailable. A station that needs live-to-scheduled switching should configure and test that behavior rather than assume it will happen automatically.
- Set up continuous audio handling. Configure Liquidsoap to manage the selected source and produce a continuous output. Liquidsoap’s official overview documents playlist handling, live shows, and an RTMP output example to YouTube Live using FFmpeg encoding. The exact input and encoding settings depend on the station’s source and chosen video workload.
- Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream or select the intended existing one. Copy the current ingestion URL and stream key displayed there. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions specify using the RTMPS URL from the control room together with the key; prefer RTMPS where the encoder supports it.
- Keep credentials private. Treat the stream key as a credential. Put it only in the relevant encoder configuration or secure secret mechanism, restrict access to that configuration, and avoid printing it in public scripts, logs, or support messages. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Choose encoder settings and a visual. Use a modest resolution and encoding workload that the VPS can sustain continuously. YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate, AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Match the chosen settings to the video being sent and the server’s capacity.
- Test before relying on it. Make a controlled test broadcast, such as a private or unlisted test where appropriate for the channel. Listen for missing or distorted audio, check that audio and visual remain synchronized, and test representative movement in the visual if it is animated. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the source remains available for a sustained run.
- Plan recovery. Decide how the encoder will be restarted if Liquidsoap, the VPS, the source feed, or the connection to YouTube fails. Test the recovery procedure and make sure the stream key remains protected during troubleshooting. Do not treat an initial successful test as proof that the setup will recover automatically.
When an Icecast output is useful
Icecast is optional for sending a YouTube stream. If the station also wants a direct audio player for listeners outside YouTube, Liquidsoap can encode and send audio to Icecast, which relays it to listeners at mount points. That is a separate delivery path to plan and size; it is not a required intermediary in Liquidsoap’s documented YouTube output example.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify that the encoder is using the current ingestion URL and matching stream key from Live Control Room, that the selected protocol is supported, and that the VPS can reach the ingestion service. Rotate an exposed key and update the configuration.
- Audio is silent or cuts out: Check that the configured Liquidsoap input is reachable and authorized, then inspect the source and encoder logs without exposing credentials. For studio feeds, verify the feed is actually being sent; for a playlist, check that its files and paths are available to the VPS.
- Audio is out of sync or the stream appears unstable: Test the source and encoded output together, reduce the encoding workload if the VPS cannot sustain it, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Use YouTube’s general guidance on constant bitrate and keyframe interval as a baseline, not as a substitute for testing.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast: Review YouTube’s notice and determine whether third-party content was identified. Confirm the station’s territorial and platform rights with the relevant owner; if the material is licensed, ask the owner about Content ID allowlisting.
- The stream stops after a source or server failure: Determine whether the cause was the source feed, Liquidsoap, the VPS, or the path to YouTube. Restore the failed component and test the planned restart or failover procedure before considering the service stable.
