You can go live without OBS using YouTube Studio’s built-in webcam flow or the YouTube mobile app. For ambient music from a browser, YouTube documents sharing audio from a supported browser tab in its screen-sharing workflow—but that does not guarantee every player or setup will work. Test privately before going public, and make sure you have livestream rights to the music.
Choose a no-OBS method
| Method | What you need | Music-source considerations |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio webcam | A computer and webcam; YouTube’s webcam help page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible browsers. | YouTube documents sharing audio from a supported browser tab in its screen-sharing flow. Screen sharing requires a connected webcam and microphone. |
| YouTube mobile app | A mobile device and a channel that meets YouTube’s current mobile live-streaming requirements. | YouTube lists mobile as a native live-streaming method, but the requirements and workflow differ from the webcam path. Check YouTube’s current guidance. |
Neither method is a promise of universal audio-only broadcasting. If your ambient track plays in a browser, use the webcam flow’s supported tab-sharing option and verify the result in an unlisted test. You do not need to install encoding software for the basic webcam method.
Check eligibility and music rights first
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. For mobile-specific requirements, consult YouTube’s current mobile live-streaming help, since those rules can change.
Get livestream permission for the music
Ambient music is still copyrighted music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including other copyrighted live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you have a license for third-party music, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A license and allowlisting are separate steps in YouTube’s process: a stream can still be interrupted when the channel has not been allowlisted. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. YouTube for Artists advises music channels: “If you’re planning on using copyright-protected music during your live stream, we recommend coordinating with your label or distributor to avoid any issues, such as copyright strikes.”
Do not assume that music being available through a consumer listening service or giving the artist credit grants you livestream rights. Check the license terms and obtain permission that covers live streaming.

Go live from YouTube Studio on a computer
- Enable live streaming and sign in. Make sure the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements and that live streaming is enabled.
- Open the webcam flow. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Webcam. YouTube describes webcam streaming as a way to go live from a computer without live-stream encoding software.
- Set the stream details. Enter a title and description, choose the privacy setting, and schedule the stream if you want it to start later.
- Select the inputs. Choose the webcam and microphone. If you are sharing a browser tab, use the screen-sharing workflow and select the supported tab playing your ambient music. YouTube says tab audio is shared by default when presenting a supported browser tab in this flow. Keep the required webcam and microphone connected.
- Check what viewers will receive. Confirm the selected tab, camera, microphone, privacy setting, and music rights before choosing Go Live.
- End the stream in Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
YouTube’s listed browser compatibility for the webcam page is Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+. Because browser support changes, using a current browser is prudent; the cited versions are YouTube’s published compatibility list, not a guarantee for every operating system, player, or audio setup.
Use the YouTube mobile app
YouTube lists its mobile app as another native way to start a live stream. Open the app’s live-creation flow and follow the on-screen checks. Since mobile streaming has additional requirements, use YouTube’s current mobile eligibility and setup instructions rather than relying on subscriber or device thresholds from older guides. This is a practical option when you want to go live from a phone, but the webcam help’s browser-tab audio instructions do not establish that a phone can capture audio from every music app or source.

Test privately before broadcasting publicly
YouTube for Artists recommends: “Test your live stream in an unlisted stream before your go-live date, especially for high-production or high-investment events.” For an ambient stream, make the test a real check of your setup:
- Set privacy to unlisted and confirm the stream opens as expected.
- Listen to the stream playback to verify the intended browser tab is actually sharing audio.
- Check that the selected microphone and camera are the inputs you intended, even if the camera is not central to the music.
- Confirm that the audio is present and continuous in the test; do not assume the browser’s local playback means viewers can hear it.
- Resolve music permissions and any required Content ID allowlisting before switching to public.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Viewers cannot hear the music: Check that you shared a supported browser tab through the documented screen-sharing flow and that the tab is playing. Run another unlisted test. YouTube’s instructions do not promise that every browser, player, or operating system will transmit audio.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the minimum age requirement. For a mobile stream, check the current mobile requirements separately.
- YouTube shows a copyright warning or interrupts the broadcast: Stop using content you do not have rights to stream. If you hold a license, contact the rights owner about adding your channel to the Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption.
- The webcam screen-sharing flow will not start: Confirm a webcam and microphone are connected, as YouTube requires them for screen sharing in Live Control Room. Recheck the browser and selected inputs.
- The archive receives a claim: YouTube says archived live streams may receive Content ID claims after the stream ends. Review the claim and the relevant rights before making the archive public or disputing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
