YouTube streams the videos as you watch. This is different from downloading videos for offline viewing, which has separate account, availability, browser, and app restrictions.
Play a YouTube playlist in a browser
- Connect your Raspberry Pi to the internet and connect it to a display. Use the cable or adapter that matches your Pi model and the display’s ports. Some Pi models use micro-HDMI-to-HDMI to connect to a full-size HDMI display; check your own ports before buying a cable.
- Open a browser. Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation lists Chromium and Firefox as browser choices.
- Go to YouTube, open the playlist, and start playback from its page. You do not need to download the videos onto the Pi first.
- Keep the Pi connected to the internet while you watch. If playback is poor, check the network connection and YouTube playback settings, then try a lower resolution.
The exact playback quality and smoothness depend on the Pi model, operating system, browser, display, network, and video format. Raspberry Pi’s browser and setup guidance does not establish consistent YouTube performance across those combinations, so there is no single resolution or playback result to guarantee.

Online playback is not an offline playlist download
When you play a playlist in the browser while connected to the internet, YouTube delivers the video for playback; that does not create a local copy of the playlist. YouTube’s separate offline-download feature has its own limits. Its computer-download help names Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera and says downloads require a signed-in Premium account where the feature is available. YouTube’s offline FAQ says downloaded videos are encrypted and can be watched only in the YouTube app. The available guidance does not establish that this feature creates a Raspberry Pi playlist cache.
YouTube says you can download your own uploaded videos through its download feature, but not other users’ videos. That is distinct from simply streaming a playlist online in a browser.

When casting is a better fit
If you have a supported TV or streaming device, casting is another way to watch a playlist, but it is not the same as playing YouTube directly on the Pi. YouTube documents casting from a computer browser to a TV or streaming device when both are on the same Wi-Fi network. It notes that some features are unavailable when casting from a browser and recommends the YouTube app for advanced features. Its phone app can also act as a companion and add videos to a receiving TV’s queue while a video plays.
Those casting instructions do not establish that a Raspberry Pi is itself a supported YouTube Cast receiver. Use casting only if you have a compatible receiving device; otherwise, open YouTube on the Pi and play the playlist there.
