You can set up and control a Raspberry Pi without attaching a monitor, keyboard, or mouse by installing Raspberry Pi OS Lite, configuring network access and remote access in Raspberry Pi Imager, then connecting over SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. To watch the playlist, however, connect the Pi’s video output to a TV or other display. In this guide, “without a monitor” means monitor-free setup and administration—not playback with no screen.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi with network access and a power supply appropriate for its model.
- A second computer or device on the same network for remote administration.
- A TV or other display for playback, plus the correct HDMI cable for your Pi model.
- A YouTube playlist URL and a media player that can currently retrieve YouTube playlists on your Raspberry Pi OS release.
Raspberry Pi describes a headless device as operating without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Network access is what lets you administer it remotely. The display used to watch video is a separate requirement. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation covers headless setup.

Set up Raspberry Pi OS for headless access
- Install Raspberry Pi Imager on another computer. Select Raspberry Pi OS Lite for your board. Raspberry Pi recommends Lite for a headless installation.
- Configure the system before writing the card. In Imager’s customisation options, set the hostname and user credentials, configure wireless networking if you will use Wi-Fi, and enable SSH. The exact labels can vary by Imager version; check the current options presented by your version.
- Write the operating system and boot the Pi. Insert the prepared card, connect power and allow the Pi to join the network. You do not need to connect a setup monitor, keyboard, or mouse.
- Connect remotely. From another device, use SSH to connect to the hostname or IP address you configured, or use Raspberry Pi Connect. SSH is disabled by default on Raspberry Pi OS unless you enable it during imaging or afterward, so do not rely on SSH until it has been enabled. See Raspberry Pi’s remote-access documentation.
If you already installed Raspberry Pi OS, you can still administer the Pi headlessly, but first ensure networking is configured and enable your chosen remote-access method. If you cannot reach the Pi, use a temporary display and input devices to correct network or access settings, or re-image the card with those settings configured.
Connect a TV for playback
Connect the Pi’s HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input, then select that input on the TV. The cable connector depends on the board: Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5 use micro-HDMI, while Raspberry Pi Zero models use mini-HDMI. Check your exact model before buying a cable; Raspberry Pi lists the relevant connectors in its connector documentation. HDMI-capable Raspberry Pi models also support HDMI audio. Raspberry Pi’s HDMI audio documentation describes that output.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
This cable is for sending playback to the TV, not for headless setup. If the picture or sound does not appear, check the selected TV input, cable fit, and audio route.
Play the playlist with mpv
mpv’s FAQ documents passing a YouTube playlist URL directly to mpv. Use the playlist’s actual URL, typically in the form https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=…, rather than an individual video URL that happens to include playlist parameters. The mpv FAQ explains this distinction.

The available documentation does not establish one install command and playback command that works across every Raspberry Pi model and Raspberry Pi OS release. Package availability and YouTube extraction compatibility can change, and some setups may need companion software. Check the current mpv installation guidance for your OS release, install a compatible setup, and then pass the playlist URL as mpv’s input. Do not assume a command copied for another release or board will work unchanged.
Before relying on unattended playback, test the playlist while connected remotely and confirm that the TV shows both video and audio. The playlist must be accessible to the account or player retrieving it; private, age-restricted, or otherwise access-controlled videos may not play as expected.

mpv and VLC are not interchangeable here
| Player | What is documented | What that means for this task |
|---|---|---|
| mpv | Its FAQ explicitly describes passing a YouTube playlist URL directly. | The documented starting point for this playlist use case; confirm current compatibility and installation steps for your OS. |
| VLC | Raspberry Pi OS documentation says VLC is included and uses hardware acceleration for supported formats, with command-line playback support. | A documented option for local media playback, but the cited Raspberry Pi documentation does not establish direct YouTube playlist playback. |
For the Pi’s administration, SSH provides terminal access over your network; Raspberry Pi Connect is another documented remote-access path. Choose based on whether you prefer local-network terminal access or Connect’s service, and configure the chosen method before disconnecting any temporary setup peripherals.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The Pi does not appear on the network: verify the Wi-Fi credentials or wired connection configured in Imager, confirm the Pi has finished booting, and check the router’s device list for its hostname or IP address.
- SSH connection fails: SSH may still be disabled. Enable it during imaging or on the existing system, and confirm that the username, hostname or IP address, and network are correct.
- mpv cannot open the playlist: confirm you supplied the playlist URL itself, that the playlist is accessible, and that your installed player setup remains compatible with YouTube. Recheck the instructions for your OS release rather than assuming a universal command.
- Video plays but the TV is blank: confirm the TV is on the Pi’s HDMI input and that you are using the right connector and cable for the board. Check the exact model’s display guidance if output remains absent.
- There is no sound: verify the TV’s volume and audio settings and confirm HDMI is the selected output. Audio behavior can depend on the model and connection.
- The setup becomes unreliable after an update: YouTube extraction behavior and third-party player compatibility can change. Check current player and OS guidance, then test the playlist again before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than local playlist playback on a TV, StreamNeo is a different option: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming, not a way to show the playlist on a TV from the Pi. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
