The documented yt-dlp-to-VLC pipe example handles one video; VLC’s documented continuous broadcast example sequences local files. For reliable playback, use media accessible locally and put the items in a VLC playlist. Direct YouTube playlist playback may work in some setups, but compatibility depends on your VLC and yt-dlp versions and should be tested.
How do I stream a YouTube playlist continuously with VLC?
First decide what you mean by “stream”:
- Play a YouTube playlist in VLC: VLC accesses YouTube URLs and advances from one video to the next. This is the simplest idea, but current support for YouTube URLs—especially playlist URLs—is version-sensitive. The available documentation does not establish a stable, universal playlist-URL workflow.
- Play a sequence continuously in VLC: VLC plays multiple locally accessible media files in order. VLC’s 3.0 documentation demonstrates this for a playlist broadcast, including keeping the output open as one file ends.
- Rebroadcast the sequence: VLC plays the sequence and sends it over a local network or another configured output. That is a separate setup from simply watching the playlist on the same computer.
If your goal is dependable continuous playback, the local-media sequence is the better-documented approach. If you want VLC to fetch and advance through YouTube links directly, test your exact setup rather than assuming that opening one video successfully means a whole playlist will work.
Option 1: Try a YouTube URL directly
yt-dlp documents piping an individual YouTube video to VLC. Its FAQ gives this pattern:
yt-dlp -o - "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID" | vlc -
Here, -o - sends the media to standard output, and VLC reads it from standard input. The example is for one video URL. It is not a verified recipe for continuous playback of an entire YouTube playlist, so do not rely on it alone to make VLC advance automatically.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test before relying on direct playlist playback
- Check the versions of VLC and yt-dlp installed on your system.
- Try a short, public YouTube playlist and verify both that the first video opens and that playback advances to the next one.
- If you use a command or playlist URL beyond yt-dlp’s documented single-video example, treat its behavior as specific to your versions and configuration.
VLC’s YouTube Lua integration has also been the subject of compatibility discussion. A January 6, 2026 VideoLAN developer-list thread concerned a proposal to remove a broken youtube.lua script; a contributor in that discussion reported that it still worked for their YouTube live streams. That is an individual report, not a general compatibility guarantee. See the VideoLAN developer-list discussion.
Option 2: Make the videos locally accessible, then play them in sequence
This approach avoids depending on VLC’s ability to interpret a YouTube playlist URL at playback time. yt-dlp supports playlist processing, archive tracking for successfully handled video IDs, and playlist-indexed output naming. Those features can help organize a local-media workflow, but downloading or processing a playlist does not by itself guarantee continuous VLC playback. You still need to arrange the resulting media as a VLC playlist or another sequence VLC can play.

Use this approach only when you are entitled to access and use the videos in this way, and follow applicable platform terms. For yt-dlp’s documented options and syntax, consult its FAQ and the Debian trixie yt-dlp manpage. The manpage describes playlist-indexed output patterns and standard-output behavior.
Build and play the VLC sequence
- Make the media files accessible on the computer running VLC, in the order you want them to play.
- Open the files as a VLC playlist and confirm the order. VLC’s general documentation is available at VideoLAN’s VLC User Documentation.
- Enable playlist repeat if you want the sequence to start again after its last item. VLC’s exact controls can vary by platform and version; verify the repeat mode shown in your player rather than assuming a particular menu path.
- Play the sequence and check that VLC advances across file boundaries. If you need to broadcast it to other devices, configure a VLC output separately.
A local sequence is not the same as an uninterrupted, gapless stream: the VLC documentation establishes sequencing and continuous broadcast behavior, not zero-gap transitions for every file or computer.

Rebroadcast a local playlist over a network
VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 includes a VLM example for broadcasting a playlist of local media inputs over HTTP. It uses sout-keep so the stream does not break when one item ends, and provides commands for receiving the broadcast. The example concerns local files; it does not show VLC ingesting a YouTube playlist URL.
Follow the example’s configuration and commands as documented for VLC 3.0: VLM Example: Broadcast A Playlist. Confirm that the VLC version and operating system you use support the same options, then test both the sender and a receiving device. Network access, firewall rules, and the receiving player can affect whether another device can connect; the cited example is not a promise that a particular network will be preconfigured for playback.

Which method should you use?
| Approach | Setup | Where the media comes from | Best suited to | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open YouTube URLs directly in VLC | Less preparation if it works | YouTube, through version-dependent integration | Trying to play a playlist without first arranging local files | The sources do not establish a stable, universal playlist-URL workflow. |
| Play a local VLC playlist | More preparation: media must be locally accessible and arranged | Local files | Predictable sequential playback in VLC | It is not proof of uninterrupted or gapless transitions. |
| Broadcast a local playlist with VLM | Configure a broadcast and receiving device | Local files, sequenced by VLC | Sending the sequence to another device over a configured output | The documented example is for local inputs, not direct YouTube playlist ingestion. |
Troubleshooting
One YouTube video fails to open
Check your VLC and yt-dlp versions, then test the documented single-video pipe pattern. If that fails, the issue is with the individual URL handoff or current YouTube integration—not evidence that playlist advancement is the only problem.
The first video plays, but VLC does not advance
Confirm whether you opened one video or a playlist of media items. The documented yt-dlp pipe example is for one video. For a more dependable sequence, arrange locally accessible files as a VLC playlist and verify the order and repeat setting.

A YouTube playlist URL works on one computer but not another
Compare the VLC and yt-dlp versions and platform on both systems. YouTube integration is change-prone, and the cited documentation does not provide a current cross-platform compatibility matrix or guaranteed plugin-installation path.
The local broadcast stops between files
Check the VLM configuration against VideoLAN’s 3.0 playlist-broadcast example, including its use of sout-keep. Do not assume that setting applies to a direct YouTube URL workflow; the example is for sequential local inputs.
A receiving device cannot connect
Verify the sender’s broadcast configuration, the receiving command or player, and whether your network permits the connection. The VLM documentation shows an HTTP broadcast and receive workflow, but connection success depends on your environment.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than watch a YouTube playlist in VLC, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube, not local VLC playback or camera streaming. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
