One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can use a Raspberry Pi and FFmpeg to send a video stored on an external drive to YouTube as a live encoder feed. Mount the drive, check that the video’s streams fit YouTube’s ingest requirements, then have FFmpeg read the file in real time and publish it to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. This is different from uploading a video as a normal YouTube video: viewers see it as a live stream.
The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a tested setup. Your drive path, FFmpeg build, media codecs, and network capacity all need to be verified.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS, connected to the network you intend to use for streaming.
- An external hard drive, SSD, or USB stick containing a video file.
- FFmpeg installed on the Pi, with support for the secure ingest protocol you plan to use.
- A YouTube channel and a stream configured in YouTube Studio, where you can retrieve its stream URL and private key.
- A video you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not grant permission to broadcast arbitrary copyrighted material.
Streaming continuously depends on the Pi being able to read the drive and maintain a reliable upload connection. A file that plays locally is not automatically suitable for YouTube ingest.
Mount the external drive and find the video path
Connect the drive to the Pi and confirm that the operating system can read it. Raspberry Pi documentation says popular filesystems including FAT, NTFS, and HFS+ are automatically mounted by default at /media/pi/<HARD-DRIVE-LABEL>. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not implement automounting, and a drive label or mount path may differ from the example. See Raspberry Pi’s documentation on using Linux.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume the example path is yours. Use the actual mounted location and filename in the FFmpeg command. For an unattended setup, make the mount point predictable and verify that the drive is mounted there after a restart; otherwise a command may fail or read from an unexpected location.
Check the file against YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Inspect the source file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe spacing before choosing stream copy. If FFmpeg copies the streams, it does not decode and re-encode them: it will not change their resolution, bitrate, codec, or keyframe interval to meet YouTube’s guidance. Compatibility depends on the file you already have.
YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate figures
YouTube’s current help page gives these minimum and recommended bitrates for the following H.264 settings. These are YouTube’s published figures, not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee of stream health.

Choose a quality that your upload connection can sustain, not just one the file can provide. YouTube recommends an upload-speed test, a test stream before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages while streaming.
Get the stream URL and protect the key
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and configure or select the stream you plan to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the credential-like information the encoder uses to send its feed for acceptance. Keep it private: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository, or share it in screenshots. Consult YouTube’s live streaming help for the encoder handoff.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1
-i "/media/pi/DRIVE/video.mp4"
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"
- Replace
/media/pi/DRIVE/video.mp4with the video’s real path on the mounted drive. - Replace the endpoint with the stream URL provided for your YouTube stream if needed, and replace
STREAM_KEYwith the private key from YouTube Studio. - Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS before relying on this command. FFmpeg’s online documentation describes its command-line options and protocol syntax, but the installed build and version matter.
- Run the command and check both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s Live Control Room for errors and stream health.
In this command, -re paces file input in real time, -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely, -c:v copy and -c:a copy request stream copy rather than re-encoding, and -f flv selects the output container. FFmpeg documents these options in its command-line reference; its protocol documentation covers RTMP syntax and publishing examples.
The command is not a tested command for every Pi, file, or FFmpeg build. The output only works if the source streams and container are compatible, the secure protocol is supported locally, the path is valid, and the connection can sustain the feed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When stream copy is not suitable
If YouTube rejects the feed or the source does not meet the ingest settings, inspect the file and consider encoding it to a compatible configuration instead of copying its streams. Encoding uses more Raspberry Pi resources than stream copy may require. No particular Pi model or sustained encoding performance is established here, so validate that your hardware can encode at the chosen resolution and bitrate before relying on it.
FFmpeg’s documentation is regenerated nightly, so options and behavior should be checked against the version installed on your Pi. Verify actual output in the Live Control Room rather than assuming that a command completing without an immediate error proves a healthy stream.
Test before a prolonged stream
- Confirm that the external drive is mounted at the expected path after reboot and that the video can be read.
- Check the source’s codecs and stream properties against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Measure whether the available upload speed can sustain the selected output quality.
- Start a test feed with content that includes representative movement and audio, as YouTube recommends.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and confirm that the live output is behaving as expected before leaving it unattended.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the input file | The drive is not mounted, or the path or filename is wrong. | Verify the real mount point and file path. On Raspberry Pi OS Lite, do not expect automounting. |
| The feed connects but YouTube reports an ingest problem | The source codecs, keyframe spacing, bitrate, or container may not fit the selected ingest setup. | Inspect the source properties and compare them with YouTube’s encoder settings. Stream copy does not fix incompatible media. |
| The RTMPS connection fails | The local FFmpeg build may not support the chosen secure protocol, or the URL/key may not match the selected stream. | Check RTMPS support in the installed build and copy the current URL and key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private. |
| The stream becomes unstable | The upload connection may not sustain the source bitrate, or the drive may not be reliably available. | Test upload speed, select a sustainable quality, and check drive mounting and YouTube stream-health messages. |
| The Pi struggles when encoding | Transcoding can require more resources than copying an already suitable stream. | Validate performance on the actual Pi at the desired resolution and bitrate; no model-specific performance is assumed here. |
