You can run a Tamil podcast archive as a continuous YouTube Live stream by sending a looping playlist from an encoder on a VPS to a YouTube stream. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key; the VPS and encoder are your chosen way to keep the playlist sending. This guide covers eligibility, rights, encoder settings, a basic FFmpeg setup, unattended operation, and the important limit on YouTube’s automatic archives.
Before you start
Check that the channel can livestream
YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The minimum age to livestream is 16. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before preparing the server.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Prepare the archive and clear every element
Make a playlist of the episodes in the intended order and decide what viewers will see: for example, a static title card or episode-specific artwork. Check the rights for the episode recordings, music beds, guest-contributed material, clips, cover art, and any visuals. Rights to one component do not automatically establish rights to the rest.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and warning; if the matched content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end it. Licensed content may still trigger a match unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived completed stream may also receive a Content ID claim later. See YouTube Help’s “Copyright issues with live streams” and “Get started with live streaming” for the applicable platform guidance.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select a stream for the broadcast. YouTube’s “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” instructions describe this encoder workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the URL and key in the encoder’s stream settings; do not expose the key in a public script, screenshot, repository, or support post. Anyone with the key may be able to publish to the stream.
- Use the Studio-provided ingest details. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. For API-level RTMPS ingestion, Google documents protocol
rtmps, port443, a valid YouTube ingest endpoint, and a hostname for TLS SNI authentication. Most operators can avoid constructing an endpoint manually by using the URL YouTube Studio provides.
Set the encoder to YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. For stereo audio, its advanced recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are platform specifications, not a guarantee of performance from a particular VPS.
| Video setting | YouTube recommendation | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps video bitrate | A reference point for a moving-video stream; a static podcast visual may not need this much bandwidth, but check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the intended output. |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps video bitrate | Use this as YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation for this format, not as a measured VPS requirement. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set the encoder accordingly and verify the outgoing stream settings. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps | Use as the stated advanced audio recommendation where it fits the source audio. |
For a podcast with a static card, distinguish the source file from the encoded live output: the source may be high quality while the stream uses a lower resolution appropriate to its visual content. Avoid choosing a bitrate solely by habit. The outgoing bitrate affects the VPS’s sustained network upload, and re-encoding also consumes server resources; stream-copying avoids that encoding workload but only works when the files and stream format are compatible. YouTube recommends testing with audio and moving video similar to the intended broadcast, then watching stream health.

Run a looping playlist from the VPS
One possible implementation is FFmpeg with a concat demuxer playlist. It is an implementation choice, not a YouTube requirement. The following is a starting-point example for compatible media files, not a tested command or a guarantee that every file combination will loop cleanly. Replace the sample paths and encoder settings, and keep the stream key private.
- Install FFmpeg using your VPS operating system’s package manager and upload the episode files to a directory you control.
- Create a playlist file, such as
/srv/podcast/episodes.txt, with one entry per episode in playback order:file '/srv/podcast/episode-01.mp4'
file '/srv/podcast/episode-02.mp4'
Use paths valid on the server. If the media is audio-only, use an accompanying visual input as well; YouTube Live expects a video stream. - Test a single pass privately or with an unlisted stream. Confirm that audio is present, the visual is intentional, transitions are acceptable, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before relying on unattended playback.
- For compatible files, a stream-copying example is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/podcast/episodes.txt -c copy -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
ReplaceINGEST_URLandSTREAM_KEYwith the private values supplied by YouTube Studio. This example assumes the playlist files can be concatenated and their codecs/container characteristics are compatible with the outgoing stream. Do not treat it as suitable for arbitrary mixed media. - If the files are not compatible, configure a real-time transcode instead with a consistent video and audio format, CBR, and the keyframe interval and bitrates appropriate to the selected output. The exact transcode command depends on the inputs, desired resolution, codec, and available VPS resources; verify the output rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all command.
Embedding a real key directly in a shell command can expose it through shell history, process listings, or logs. Prefer a restricted configuration or secret-handling mechanism appropriate to your server, limit access to it, and rotate the key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Keep the process supervised, and plan for interruptions
A VPS does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted transmission. For unattended operation, configure a process supervisor to restart the encoder after an unexpected exit, and monitor the process, outgoing network, logs, disk space, and YouTube stream health. These are operational design choices; YouTube does not require FFmpeg or systemd, and its encoder guidance does not establish a particular VPS CPU, memory, bandwidth margin, or restart guarantee. Size the server for the actual encoding method and observed load.
- Stream stops after an episode: check the playlist order, file paths, and whether FFmpeg reached the end rather than continuing the intended loop.
- YouTube shows no incoming signal: verify the Studio-provided URL and key, the encoder process output, and the VPS network connection. If the key was exposed, replace it rather than continuing to use it.
- Stream health warns about bitrate or keyframes: compare the outgoing encoder settings with YouTube’s current guidance and adjust the CBR rate and keyframe interval.
- Audio or picture disappears at a transition: inspect the affected source files for incompatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or audio layouts; normalize or transcode the playlist where needed.
- Stream is interrupted despite a running encoder: check YouTube’s warning or copyright notice and review rights and Content ID allowlisting with the relevant rights holder.
- Encoder repeatedly restarts or overloads: inspect logs and actual CPU, memory, disk, and network use. Re-encoding generally requires more processing than stream-copying; reduce encoding demands or choose a server sized to observed workload.
Understand the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That guidance does not promise one complete archive for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If an accessible archive is important, plan separately scheduled sessions that remain under 12 hours and verify the resulting archives in Studio. Session boundaries can interrupt the continuous viewing experience, so they are a trade-off rather than a seamless guarantee.
