An encoder is a practical choice for a program assembled from audio and a visual such as a title card. The steps differ if you are broadcasting a live performance or relaying an existing station feed, but the rights checks still apply.
1. Check that your channel can go live
- Your channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- You must be at least 16 to live stream.
Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before preparing a broadcast; restrictions can prevent you from starting one. YouTube’s available methods include mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. For current eligibility details, see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
2. Choose how to send the program
For a radio-style program mixed or played from a computer, an encoder can send the audio along with a static image, title card, or other visual feed. If you are performing live, use the method that fits how the performance is produced. A mobile or webcam broadcast may suit a direct performance; an encoder is useful when the audio and visuals are assembled on a computer.
You do not need HLS just because your program is audio-led. YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, with specific requirements and higher latency than RTMP. Use a protocol supported by both your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance and supported encoder settings.

3. Clear the songs, recordings, and performance rights
Before scheduling, make an inventory of every song, sound recording, performance, and visual in the broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the provider to obtain the necessary rights for worldwide use on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Applicable requirements can also depend on the territory where the stream is available. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
Do not assume a Tamil devotional song is free to broadcast because it is traditional, devotional, or old. Rights may differ between a composition and a particular recording or arrangement; permissions also need to cover live streaming, relevant territories, and any replay or archive. The rights for a particular song or recording cannot be determined from its genre alone.

Ask about Content ID allowlisting
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it detects a match, it may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if the content continues or a relevant strike occurs. If you have permission to use third-party material, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
Check the exact scope of each permission with the rights holder. Do not assume that a license for an ordinary uploaded video, a claim dispute, or a Creator Music track authorizes a live broadcast; Creator Music’s published terms exclude live streams. 4. Create the stream and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream, then choose its settings and protocol.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube uses the key to identify and connect the encoder’s feed to the stream.
- Keep the stream key private, as you would a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings before broadcasting again.
- Start the encoder output and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.
Labels and available settings can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts and your encoder’s matching protocol options. YouTube explains the connection details in its encoder setup guidance.
5. Set audio and test the connection
For general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended stereo settings are 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of how the program will sound. Test devotional vocals, speech, and music dynamics using the actual encoder and connection. YouTube’s current settings are listed in its encoder settings guidance.

Run a test before the scheduled program
- Make a test live stream, using unlisted visibility if you do not want a public test.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and audio/video while the encoder is running.
- Confirm that the event page opens from your channel and on a phone.
- Check outbound upload capacity against the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth capacity as headroom.

Watch Live Control Room for warnings and monitor the program during the broadcast. If YouTube flags third-party material, stop or replace that content rather than assuming a license will prevent the interruption. After the stream, review the archive and YouTube Studio notifications: Content ID claims can be made after a live session is complete. Recheck rights before reusing a program or changing where it is available.
