To broadcast a recorded church sermon as a YouTube Live event from a Windows 11 PC, schedule or create the event in YouTube Studio, add the recording to an OBS scene as a Media Source, connect OBS to YouTube, check the preview, then start the event. You need an eligible YouTube channel, a PC that can play and encode the file, and a reliable internet connection; the recording does not need to be uploaded as a regular video first.
Before the service: check channel eligibility and rights
Confirm live streaming is available
Verify the YouTube channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. If this is the first time the channel is being enabled for live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours, so do it well before the service date. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its encoder setup guide.

Review the entire sermon recording
Check the opening and closing, hymn accompaniment, background tracks, photos, and any video excerpts—not just the spoken sermon. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material; a detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and an unresolved match can interrupt or terminate it. The channel needs rights for worldwide use on Google services, including applicable music rights. If music is licensed, the rights owner may also need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone does not guarantee that a live stream will not be interrupted. Confirm permissions for each included work and review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and livestream terms.

- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream using the encoder workflow. Choose the title, audience setting, visibility, and whether the event starts immediately or is scheduled.
- In the event’s Live Control Room, find its connection details, or plan to connect OBS through its YouTube service option. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. YouTube explains stream keys and stream URLs in Manage live stream settings.
For a scheduled service, set up in advance so there is time to test the complete path from the PC to YouTube.

Set up the sermon file in OBS on Windows 11
- Install and open OBS Studio, then create or select a scene for the sermon.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- Enable the local-file option and browse to the sermon recording. OBS documents support for common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. If the file does not play or its audio is missing, see the troubleshooting section below and OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- For a one-time sermon, leave Loop off. Turn it on only if repeating the recording is intentional. Check that the full picture fits the OBS canvas and that the source’s audio meter responds during playback.
If the service requires a playlist rather than one recording, OBS also provides a VLC Video source. It requires VLC, and OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
Connect OBS and choose stream settings
Connect the channel
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- Select YouTube (RTMPS) and follow the connection prompts, or enter the event’s stream key if connecting manually.
- Do not share or show the key in the sermon scene, a screenshot, or a public message.
Use settings the PC and connection can sustain
For a typical SDR sermon, use H.264 video, AAC audio, Rec. 709 colour, and constant bitrate as a practical compatibility starting point. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate according to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and the PC’s capability; do not assume that the highest setting is best if the machine cannot encode steadily. HDR settings are appropriate only when the source, graphics or encoder, display path, and intended output support HDR. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable output format.

Test the stream, preview it, and start the event
- Measure the outbound upload speed on the network the PC will use at the church. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Allow for other devices and shared connections that may use capacity during the service.
- Start OBS early enough for YouTube to receive the encoder feed. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; these are operational recommendations, not guarantees of connection quality.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and check picture, sound, framing, and any overlays. Listen for clear audio and confirm the sermon is not cropped or showing an unintended desktop or scene.
- When the preview is correct, use the YouTube control to start the event. Starting the encoder in OBS sends the feed; it is distinct from starting the scheduled live event in YouTube.
- Monitor audio and video during the broadcast. After ending the event in YouTube, stop the encoder in OBS. If YouTube archives the stream, inspect the archive; Content ID claims can arrive after a live stream ends.
YouTube’s streaming tips and live-streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the event.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check the selected YouTube (RTMPS) service or re-enter the stream key from the correct event. Make sure the key is private and that OBS is connected to the intended scheduled event.
- The preview buffers or drops: Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with available upload capacity, preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the output demand if the PC or connection cannot sustain it, and test on the same network and at the same location where the event will run.
- The recording has no sound: Confirm the Media Source is playing, watch its audio meter, and check the OBS audio output configuration. Play the file locally before the event to distinguish a file problem from an OBS routing problem.
- The picture is cropped or does not fit: Check the source transform and OBS canvas framing in the preview before going live. Verify that no unintended source or desktop capture is visible.
- The stream is interrupted after music or other media appears: Review the material against the church’s permissions and YouTube’s copyright requirements. Contact the relevant rights owner about permissions and any necessary Content ID allowlisting; do not assume that a license alone prevents an automated interruption.
Do you need extra equipment or a different setup?
For the Windows PC workflow, OBS can play the prerecorded file and send it to YouTube; no additional physical item is established as necessary. YouTube also lists standalone hardware encoders. Its guidance describes the AJA HELO Plus as a device with a PlayToStream feature for scheduled prerecorded media sent directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That is an alternative appliance-based approach, not a requirement for this PC method. Consider a microphone, webcam, capture card, or network accessory only if the recording process or the PC’s available connection creates a specific need. YouTube’s advice is practical: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.
