How to Stream a Prerecorded Playlist to YouTube 24/7 with MediaMTX

You can use FFmpeg to publish prerecorded video into MediaMTX, then configure MediaMTX to forward the feed to YouTube over RTMPS. MediaMTX’s documented FFmpeg example loops one file—not a multi-file playlist—so preparing and validating a playlist input is a separate step. A 24/7 loop also depends on a running, monitored host and a working network; looping a file alone does not guarantee a continuous broadcast.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • FFmpeg and MediaMTX installed on a computer or server that can remain powered on and connected to the internet for the intended broadcast.
  • A prepared playlist input that your FFmpeg workflow can read. MediaMTX’s documented example covers an endlessly looped single MP4, not a multi-file playlist format or seamless transitions. MediaMTX’s FFmpeg publishing guide.
  • Prerecorded video and audio that you have permission to stream. Your rights depend on your licenses and the material; neither YouTube ingest nor MediaMTX grants permission to rebroadcast it.

Set up YouTube and MediaMTX

1. Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. The key identifies and authorizes the incoming encoder feed, so treat it like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update your configuration. Use the current values from Studio rather than relying on an old saved endpoint. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

2. Configure MediaMTX to forward to YouTube

MediaMTX’s forwarding instructions describe sending a path to YouTube using RTMPS, with the destination URL and stream key joined by #. Follow the current MediaMTX instructions for the configuration syntax and certificate handling: Forward streams with MediaMTX. The documentation notes that its displayed ingest URL and certificate fingerprint reflect what it reported when that page was last checked; verify the current endpoint in YouTube Studio and use current certificate guidance instead of copying a potentially stale value.

Replace file.mp4 with the path to your file. This command is evidence for a single-file loop and RTMP publishing into MediaMTX; it is not a multi-file playlist command. The -c copy option passes through the file’s existing streams rather than encoding them again, so the result depends on the source media and whether the complete workflow accepts it. MediaMTX also documents an RTSP publishing example; RTMP and RTSP are alternative local publishing methods, not a claim that one is universally better. Choose the method supported by your FFmpeg workflow and MediaMTX configuration. MediaMTX’s FFmpeg examples.

For a multi-file playlist

Prepare a playlist input that your FFmpeg workflow can read, then adapt the publishing step to that input. The cited MediaMTX instructions do not establish a specific playlist format, command, transition behavior, or recovery procedure. Before using it as a continuous broadcast, test the actual files and confirm their order, audio and video tracks, media compatibility, and what happens at each file boundary. If you require transitions or gap-free changes, verify those behaviors in your chosen playlist workflow rather than assuming the single-file loop provides them.

Confirm the feed in YouTube before relying on it

  1. Start the FFmpeg publisher and check that the intended MediaMTX path is receiving the stream.
  2. Check MediaMTX’s forwarding status and open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview and health feedback. Confirm that the expected video and audio arrive before treating the stream as live.
  3. Check both tracks explicitly. MediaMTX warns: “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track. Video-only streams are silently rejected.” MediaMTX, “Forward streams”.
  4. Test the playlist’s file changes and end-of-list behavior with your own media. Confirm the stream remains acceptable to YouTube as the source moves between items.

Plan for 24/7 operation separately from looping

-stream_loop -1 repeats a single input; it does not guarantee that FFmpeg or MediaMTX will restart after a crash, that the host or network will stay available, that YouTube will keep accepting the feed, or that a broadcast will be archived indefinitely. A continuous deployment therefore needs an always-on host, reliable connectivity, monitoring, and a recovery plan for the failures you expect. Test restarts and reconnections in the intended environment; the cited examples do not establish automatic restart or failover behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition is not a promise of indefinite archiving for a 24/7 broadcast. When you finish a stream, YouTube instructs encoders to stop sending content and end the stream. Check the current Live Control Room status and YouTube’s encoder guidance for the lifecycle applicable to your stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not show an incoming feed The FFmpeg publisher is not reaching the intended MediaMTX path, or the forwarding destination, URL, or key is incorrect. Check FFmpeg output, the MediaMTX path and forwarding status, then compare the configured destination with the current URL and key in YouTube Studio. Protect the key and replace it if exposed.
YouTube silently rejects a video-only feed The stream lacks an audio track. Inspect the source and incoming feed for both audio and video tracks; MediaMTX identifies both as required by YouTube.
The single-file example fails to open or publish the source The file path may be wrong, the file may be inaccessible, or the local MediaMTX path may not match the configured publishing setup. Check the input path, file access, FFmpeg output, and MediaMTX path/configuration. The documented example uses file.mp4 and rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream as illustrative values.
A multi-file playlist skips, stalls, or changes unexpectedly The playlist input, media compatibility, or file-boundary behavior is not validated by the single-file MediaMTX example. Test the exact playlist and files outside a relied-upon broadcast; verify order, transitions, tracks, and end-of-list handling in the FFmpeg workflow you selected.
The broadcast stops after a host, process, or network failure A looping input does not itself restart a failed publisher or restore a failed connection. Check which process or link stopped, restore it, and verify recovery in your deployment. Add monitoring and a tested restart/reconnection plan; the cited documentation does not promise automatic recovery.
