A single YouTube Live event should not be treated as an endless broadcast: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, so plan to end and start successive events. Before you begin, confirm your channel is eligible, clear the rights to every recording and included asset, and test your actual files and internet connection.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned start. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can stay powered on, connected to the internet and running for the broadcast window.
- Local copies of the lecture videos and a playlist manifest listing them in the order you want them played.
- Permission for the complete audio-visual package. This includes lecture recordings and any recitations, music, images, clips or other third-party material they contain.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the bitrate you choose. Measure the connection where the encoder will run rather than assuming that a particular speed, power reliability or hosting performance applies across India.
Check rights before building the playlist
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and warning; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. Even permission to use material may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

1. Inventory and order your files
Put the videos in a folder and decide the intended sequence. The concat demuxer reads entries in order. Make sure each path is accurate, and test the files themselves for missing audio, corruption, unexpected black frames or silence before using them in a live broadcast.

2. Create the manifest
In the media folder, create a plain-text file named playlist.txt. For example:
file 'lecture-01.mp4'
file 'lecture-02.mp4'
file 'lecture-03.mp4'Use paths relative to the manifest or provide valid paths to your files. The example assumes trusted local files with simple names. If a path contains special characters or the files are in another directory, follow FFmpeg’s concat-manifest quoting rules in the FFmpeg formats documentation. Keep the listed files in the same sequence you want viewers to hear and see them.
3. Confirm the files are compatible
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join files without re-encoding only when their relevant stream structures, codecs and time bases match. It adjusts packet timestamps as it joins files; inaccurate duration information can create timestamp artifacts or gaps. Review the concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg FAQ.

If the files differ, standardize or transcode them into a consistent format before relying on stream copy. Alternatively, use a re-encoding workflow. Stream copy cannot apply filters; FFmpeg’s concat filter documentation explains the filter-based approach, and its full documentation covers stream copy and transcoding.
Enable YouTube Live and get the encoder details
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. If this is your channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming and allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule a live stream in Live Control Room. Use a clear title and description that accurately identify the lecture playlist and its content.
- Choose the encoder connection details shown for that stream: the server or ingest URL and the stream key. Use the RTMPS option when available. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies an
rtmpsendpoint, a valid application path, port 443 and SSL transport. - Keep the stream key private. Anyone with it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not paste it into a public script, screenshot, message or article. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings.
Choose output settings that fit your connection and source
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The appropriate video bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so use the current bitrate table on YouTube’s encoder settings page rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Pick a resolution and frame rate that match your source and that your measured upload connection can sustain.
- Use CBR for a controlled output bitrate. Leave headroom for normal connection variation instead of choosing a bitrate that consumes all available upload capacity.
- For re-encoded output, set the keyframe interval to two seconds where possible and do not exceed four seconds. For 30 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames; for other frame rates, adjust the frame count accordingly.
- Test the actual video and audio through YouTube before a public broadcast, then watch the stream-health indicators in Live Control Room. YouTube creates viewer playback formats, so you do not need to generate every viewer rendition yourself.
Connect FFmpeg to the YouTube broadcast
The commands below show two different approaches; neither should be treated as a tested, universal end-to-end setup. Replace the example URL and key with the values for your own YouTube stream, and check the resulting picture, sound and stream health before relying on it.

Option A: stream-copy files that are already compatible
Use stream copy only if the files are compatible with one another and their audio/video formats and timing are suitable for YouTube. This avoids encoding, but it cannot standardize mismatched files or force a new keyframe interval.

-f flv 'YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'-re reads the input at its normal playback rate; -stream_loop -1 repeats the playlist indefinitely for as long as FFmpeg runs. The optional audio map allows a file without an audio stream, but the playlist still needs to behave consistently as a concat input. Replace the final placeholder with the RTMPS server URL and key from your YouTube stream. If YouTube shows these as separate fields, combine them according to the encoder instructions; do not append the key twice or guess an endpoint.
Option B: re-encode to a consistent output
If files need standardization, decoding and re-encoding can produce a uniform output. This example uses H.264 video and AAC audio. Replace VIDEO_BITRATE and BUFFER_SIZE with appropriate values from YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution and frame rate; the buffer value must be a valid FFmpeg size. The example sets 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP for a two-second keyframe interval. Change both if you use a different frame rate.

Confirm that the source has the mapped streams, that the chosen output resolution and frame rate are suitable, and that your FFmpeg build includes the encoder you selected. If the input lacks audio, remove the audio options or provide a consistent audio stream; if it has different video dimensions, decide whether to scale it as part of the encoding workflow. Use the current YouTube table and test the real output.

- Start with a private or otherwise suitable test stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm FFmpeg connects and the preview shows the intended lecture.
- Listen for intelligible audio and check that speech, recitation or music is not clipped, missing or out of sync. Inspect transitions between files as well as the start of the playlist.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and adjust resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected output. A successful connection alone does not prove that playback is stable.
- For a live event, start FFmpeg after YouTube’s encoder details are ready. Keep the computer or server, network connection and FFmpeg process running for the planned broadcast window. A UPS or remote host may reduce some local interruptions, but neither guarantees uninterrupted service.
- Check the stream periodically. A process exit, power loss, connection failure, media error or YouTube interruption can stop the broadcast; arrange an operator or monitoring process that can identify and respond to failures.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not mean one event can run forever: plan a turnover before the threshold, end the current broadcast and start a subsequent one using its encoder details. Build time into the schedule to confirm the new event is live and audible. A 24/7 channel therefore requires operational planning around successive live events, not an assumption that a single YouTube event is permanent. See YouTube’s encoder and archive guidance.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg and YouTube problems
- YouTube does not show the channel as ready for live streaming: confirm channel verification and check for live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- FFmpeg cannot connect: verify the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, check for accidental whitespace or a duplicated key, and use the RTMPS endpoint and connection details provided for the stream. Keep port 443 and SSL requirements in mind for RTMPS.
- The playlist stops or shows errors at a file boundary: check paths, manifest syntax and file integrity. Confirm that the files have matching stream structure, codecs and time bases if using the concat demuxer. Standardize or transcode incompatible files, and investigate inaccurate duration metadata if timestamps or transitions are wrong.
- The stream is choppy or YouTube reports poor health: compare the selected bitrate with the connection’s measured upload capacity at the encoder location. Test again at a lower supported resolution or bitrate and monitor the result.
- Video appears but audio is absent: check that the source files contain audio and that the command maps the intended audio stream. If the playlist has inconsistent audio streams, standardize it before using concat or revise the encoding workflow.
- The stream is interrupted despite having permission: check for third-party matches and ask the relevant rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. A license does not by itself ensure that YouTube’s live scanning will not interrupt a channel that is not allowlisted.
- The broadcast ends during an all-day schedule: check whether the YouTube event reached the under-12-hour archive threshold, whether FFmpeg exited, or whether power, network or a rights match interrupted it. Start the next scheduled event and verify its preview instead of assuming the old stream will resume.
