To stream a pre-recorded playlist as a YouTube Live broadcast in 1080p, use an encoder to play the files and send them to a YouTube Live event. Set the encoder output to 1920×1080 and choose one frame rate—typically 30 or 60 fps—then test the playlist and stream health before going public. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • An encoder that can play your pre-recorded files and send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as a verified software encoder.
  • The video files you want to play, arranged in the intended order.
  • A reliable upload connection that can sustain the selected stream bitrate.

A playlist is an encoder-side playback workflow: the encoder plays the files and sends the resulting feed to YouTube. Do not assume YouTube Studio itself will play a playlist of local recordings for you.

Choose 30 or 60 fps and set the video bitrate

Set the frame rate in the encoder, not in the YouTube event. Choose one target rate for the broadcast, ideally matching the source footage. Avoid changing frame rates midstream. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives these H.264 ingest recommendations:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, not a guarantee that every viewer will immediately receive 1080p playback. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended bitrate, test at a lower setting and monitor stream health rather than assuming the encoder’s configured value is reaching YouTube intact.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

YouTube also lists codec-specific AV1/H.265 recommendations: 10 Mbps recommended (4 Mbps minimum) for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps recommended (4 Mbps minimum) for 1080p60. These values apply to those codecs, not H.264. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1, with CBR encoding, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For SDR, its advanced recommendations include Rec. 709, progressive scan, square pixels and 8-bit depth. See YouTube’s encoder settings for current details.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live event. Set its title, description, privacy and other event details.
  2. Select an encoder stream key for the event. YouTube says the stream key connects your encoder to the event; handle it like a password and do not share it publicly. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder’s streaming output settings. Use RTMPS where supported, as YouTube recommends it.

YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. If you need to select the resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable “Turn on manual settings” under Stream Resolution in YouTube Studio. The encoder still needs to output the selected 1920×1080 resolution.

Configure and test the playlist in your encoder

  1. Set the encoder’s output canvas and stream resolution to 1920×1080, then select 30 or 60 fps. Choose a single rate appropriate for the source and your upload capacity.
  2. Add the pre-recorded files as media playback inputs or through the encoder’s playlist controls. Set their order and check how the encoder handles transitions, audio routing, and what happens when the last file ends.
  3. Verify the playlist locally before sending it live. Confirm that each file plays, audio is present and at a suitable level, and the playlist loops or stops as intended. Playlist controls and loop behavior depend on the encoder and its version.
  4. Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder, then start the encoder feed.
  5. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the event public or allowing it to begin. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast and monitoring stream health.

YouTube lists OBS as a verified software encoder, but its retrieved OBS Media Sources documentation does not establish specific playlist controls or behavior for a particular OBS version. Confirm the relevant media and loop controls in the version you use rather than relying on assumed menu labels. YouTube also lists AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 hardware encoder; its PlayToStream feature can schedule pre-recorded media directly to YouTube Live. It is an optional hardware route, not a requirement for a software workflow. See YouTube’s verified encoder information.

Troubleshoot common problems

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed

  • Check that the encoder has the stream URL and the key for the event you created, and that the stream key has not been changed or mistyped.
  • Confirm the encoder is actually running and that its connection uses a supported protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Check Live Control Room for the preview and stream-health status before making the broadcast public.

The stream buffers or reports poor health

  • Check whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health.
  • For H.264, compare your configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate: 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60. A higher frame rate has a higher recommended bitrate.
  • Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS, keeping the interval at or below four seconds.

Files play in the wrong order, do not loop, or lose audio

  • Check the playlist order, transitions and audio routing in the encoder. These controls are encoder- and version-specific.
  • Test through the end of the playlist to confirm whether it loops or stops, then adjust the encoder’s playback controls if needed.
  • Run a representative test with movement and audio before the live event; verify the result in the YouTube preview.

The stream is not 1080p or the frame rate is wrong

  • Check the encoder output resolution and frame rate; these are encoder settings.
  • If YouTube is automatically detecting settings but you need manual resolution selection, use a custom stream key and enable “Turn on manual settings” under Stream Resolution.
  • Remember that the incoming resolution does not determine the playback format delivered immediately to every viewer; YouTube transcodes live video.
