How to Stream a Pre-Recorded Video to YouTube Live from a Synology NAS

You can stream a video stored on a Synology NAS to YouTube Live, but the NAS must be paired with a playback-and-encoding workflow. The NAS stores the file; an encoder reads it, sends a live feed to YouTube using your stream URL and key, and YouTube Live Control Room handles the broadcast. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for sending a camera stream to YouTube, not for playing a prerecorded file.

Choose where playback and encoding will happen

A prerecorded file does not become a live broadcast just because it is stored on a NAS. The file has to be played in real time and encoded as a live stream. You can keep the source file on the Synology and use a separate encoder that can access it over your network, or use a cloud service that accepts uploaded videos and streams them.

  • Local encoder: A computer or other compatible encoder reads the file from the NAS and sends the stream to YouTube. The encoder and your internet connection must remain available for the broadcast.
  • Synology Surveillance Station: Synology’s documented Live Broadcast workflow selects a camera and stream profile; it is not a documented prerecorded-file player. See Synology’s Surveillance Station Live Broadcast help and its DSM 7.4 Surveillance Station specifications.
  • Cloud streaming service: A vendor may play uploaded video from its servers and send it to YouTube. Check current capabilities, plans, and terms directly with the provider before relying on it for an unattended stream.

The YouTube and Synology instructions cited here do not establish a tested FFmpeg or Container Manager recipe, hardware-acceleration support, or compatibility for a particular NAS model. Confirm that any encoder you choose can access your video and supports the protocol and settings you need; do not assume a Synology package will do so.

Prepare the video and the connection

Check the source file

  • Confirm the intended file is accessible to the encoder and plays from beginning to end.
  • Check that its audio is present, at the expected level, and synchronized with the picture.
  • For a scheduled broadcast, confirm the file’s duration and decide whether it should play once or repeat. The encoder or service—not YouTube’s stream key—controls playback behavior.

Check your upload capacity

The encoder must send a continuous live feed over your internet connection. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and checking stream health. Leave headroom rather than setting a bitrate at the limit of a connection shared with other devices. The recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than treating one number as universal.

Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast, then enter them in the encoder’s YouTube or RTMP destination settings. Use the stream URL and key belonging to the intended stream.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public configuration files, shared example commands, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.
  4. Start the encoder before the planned start time. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check the incoming video and audio. When ready, click Go live.

YouTube says scheduled streams can be promoted so viewers can find them and set reminders. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; do not rely on that automatic archive for a broadcast that reaches or exceeds 12 hours.

Set the encoder’s protocol and quality

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Use a protocol supported by both YouTube and your encoder, and choose settings the encoder can sustain over your upload connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for applicable RTMP/RTMPS streams; audio options include AAC or MP3. It supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

  • Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
Example H.264 profile YouTube-recommended bitrate range Source and scope
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps YouTube encoder settings page, accessed 2026; recommended range for this resolution, frame rate, and codec
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps YouTube encoder settings page, accessed 2026; recommended range for this resolution, frame rate, and codec

These are examples from YouTube’s table, not universal targets. A higher bitrate needs more upload capacity, and a source file’s resolution does not guarantee that the encoder or network can deliver that quality reliably. Check YouTube’s current settings table for the profile you intend to use and the options available in your encoder.

Test the stream before the audience arrives

  1. Set up the encoder well in advance and send a test feed to the intended YouTube stream.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check the stream’s health indicators before starting the public broadcast.
  3. Listen for clear, continuous audio and watch for freezes, stutters, or unexpected changes in picture quality. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
  4. For a NAS-hosted file, verify locally that the intended video plays correctly, including its audio and duration. This is a practical source-file check, not a claim that a particular Synology configuration has been tested.
  5. During the broadcast, keep monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend advance setup, preview checks, and ongoing monitoring.

What Synology’s native YouTube feature does

Synology’s Surveillance Station Live Broadcast help describes enabling the application, entering YouTube’s RTMP path and key, then choosing a camera and stream profile. The help page says YouTube Live supports H.264 video for that feature. Synology’s DSM 7.4 specifications likewise describe Live Broadcast as sending live camera streams to YouTube within a video management system for monitoring and recording. Those instructions support a camera-to-YouTube workflow, not a direct NAS-file-to-YouTube workflow.

Keep a prerecorded stream running without a local encoder

For continuous streaming, Gyre describes a cloud service that loops and schedules prerecorded videos from its servers and sends them to YouTube and other platforms accepting standard RTMP. That is the vendor’s description; check Gyre’s current availability, features, pricing, and terms before choosing it.

Or let it run in the cloud

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube receives no signal Destination details or encoder connection Check that the encoder is running and that the correct stream URL and key are entered for the intended broadcast. Keep the key private; replace it in YouTube Studio if it was exposed.
The encoder connects, but the preview is blank or wrong File playback or encoder input Play the source file locally from the encoder’s point of view, confirm it is the intended file, then inspect the encoder’s selected input and output settings.
Video stutters or stream health is poor Upload capacity or encoder load Check YouTube’s stream-health information, test upload capacity, and reduce the bitrate or choose a less demanding profile if the connection or encoder cannot sustain the current settings.
Picture appears, but audio is missing or incorrect Source audio or encoder audio settings Play the file locally to verify its audio, then check that the encoder is sending an audio track using a supported format such as AAC or MP3.
A Synology camera workflow cannot select a video file Surveillance Station Live Broadcast source type The documented feature selects a camera. Use a separate encoder workflow that can read the NAS file, or choose a suitable cloud video-streaming service.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to livestream the video, music, and any other material in the file. A video being stored on your NAS does not establish permission to broadcast it. Review YouTube’s current policies and any applicable licenses for your content before scheduling a stream; do not assume that prerecorded playback avoids copyright or channel-policy requirements.
