How to Stream a Podcast Archive to YouTube Live with Windows Task Scheduler

To schedule a podcast archive as a YouTube Live broadcast from Windows, create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio, configure an encoder to send the archive using YouTube’s stream URL and key, then use Task Scheduler to launch the encoder or a launch script at the chosen time. You still need to verify the encoder output in YouTube’s preview and click Go live for a scheduled broadcast.

Before you schedule the stream

  • Enable YouTube live streaming. If this is your first live stream, YouTube says enablement may take up to 24 hours. Set it up well before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions
  • Prepare the archive and an encoder. The encoder must be able to send the archive’s audio and video to YouTube. YouTube accepts software and hardware encoders; a hardware encoder is optional, not a requirement for this Windows workflow.
  • Plan for video as well as audio. A podcast file may be audio-only, while a YouTube live stream requires a video signal. A static image, waveform, or other visual is an implementation choice to validate with your encoder and YouTube; the sources here do not establish one best method.
  • Keep the stream key private. Anyone with the key may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Create the YouTube broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. If required, complete live-stream enablement and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Create or schedule a broadcast. Set its title, privacy, start time, and other event options to suit the podcast and audience.
  3. Choose encoder streaming and copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube’s instructions specify entering both values in the encoder. Do not share the key publicly.

Prepare the encoder launch

Set up the encoder to play the podcast archive as its input and send the resulting audio/video to YouTube. Exact menus and launch arguments vary by encoder. The available official references do not provide a tested FFmpeg command or a validated playlist/looping procedure for this specific Windows use case, so do not assume a generic command will work unchanged.

If the encoder needs to open a project, select media, or start helper programs, prepare and test that sequence before scheduling it. Microsoft documents that a scheduled task runs one program; when several programs must be launched, use a batch file as the scheduled program. See Microsoft’s schtasks create documentation.

Schedule the encoder in Task Scheduler

  1. Open Task Scheduler in Windows and choose Create Basic Task or Create Task.
  2. Give the task a recognizable name, such as “Podcast YouTube stream,” then add a time-based trigger for the broadcast start. Task Scheduler also supports startup and logon triggers; for a scheduled broadcast, choose a trigger that matches when you need the encoder to start.
  3. For the action, choose Start a program. Select the encoder executable, or select the batch file if it coordinates multiple programs. Set any required arguments and working directory according to the encoder’s own documentation.
  4. Set the account and logon behavior deliberately. Microsoft’s interactive-only setting requires the configured user to be logged on. Whether a particular encoder needs an interactive desktop depends on that encoder; it is not established for all encoders. Ensure the account can access the encoder, archive, and any visual media by their specified paths.
  5. Save the task. Before relying on unattended operation, run it manually and inspect both the encoder’s output and YouTube’s preview. This is a validation step, not a guarantee that every encoder or Windows configuration will work unattended.

For additional Task Scheduler background, see Microsoft’s What’s New in Task Scheduler. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference describes ingestion information and encoder configuration fields such as resolution and frame rate, but it is not a preset recommendation for this workflow: LiveStreams API reference.

Start and monitor the scheduled broadcast

When the trigger fires, confirm that the encoder is sending a signal and that the scheduled event shows a preview in Live Control Room. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live. Task Scheduler starts the local program; it does not itself confirm the preview or perform that YouTube control-room step.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need the automatic archive behavior, plan a broadcast shorter than 12 hours; do not assume the same guarantee for longer streams. YouTube Help

Troubleshooting

  • The task did not start: Check the trigger’s date and time, the selected account, and whether the task’s action points to the correct executable or batch file. Confirm the account can access the relevant paths.
  • The task starts but the encoder cannot find the archive: Verify the media path and working directory used by the action. Test the same launch method manually under the configured account.
  • The encoder runs but YouTube shows no preview: Confirm the encoder is sending to the YouTube server URL and using the matching stream key. Check that the encoder has both audio and a video signal, then inspect its output for errors.
  • The task only works while you are signed in: Review its account and logon configuration. Microsoft states that interactive-only execution requires the configured user to be logged on; an encoder’s own desktop requirements may also affect unattended operation.
  • The scheduled event is waiting rather than live: A scheduled encoder stream still requires checking the preview and selecting Go live in Live Control Room.
  • The archive is not available afterward: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours.
