How to Stream a Podcast Archive on YouTube Without Repeating Episodes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use one YouTube podcast playlist as the canonical home for full episodes, and set a clear cutoff date if you connect an RSS feed to episodes already uploaded to YouTube. Then treat any live replay of the archive as a separate presentation: schedule it in Live Control Room, check its metadata and stream settings, and keep a local recording because YouTube may not archive streams longer than 12 hours.

Choose what “the archive” means on YouTube

A YouTube podcast is a playlist of video episodes, not simply an audio RSS feed. For a podcast archive that listeners can browse episode by episode, make the podcast playlist the canonical full-episode archive. A live stream that plays archive material is a separate viewing experience; it does not replace the podcast playlist or turn the stream replay into an episode automatically.

Keep the podcast playlist focused

  • Include full-length episodes from one show, including its seasons.
  • Keep clips, other shows, and uploads from other channels out of the podcast playlist.
  • Put stream replays in a separate playlist unless a replay is itself a full podcast episode.

Set up the full-episode podcast playlist

  1. In YouTube Studio, create a podcast or enable podcast features on an existing playlist. YouTube’s podcast model uses a playlist for the show and videos for its episodes.
  2. Add only full episodes belonging to that show. Include all seasons in the same podcast playlist.
  3. Choose the order that fits the format. For an episodic show, order episodes newest to oldest. For a serial show whose story builds from one episode to the next, order them oldest to newest.
  4. Review the playlist after adding episodes. Check that it contains no clips, unrelated programs, or stream replays that are not full episodes.

Connect RSS without importing episodes already on YouTube

If you want YouTube to deliver future episodes from your RSS feed, set the import cutoff after the newest episode already on your channel. YouTube Help recommends uploading RSS episodes only after the most recent episode already on YouTube to avoid duplicates. Before submitting the feed, compare the existing channel archive with the feed and confirm the cutoff date in Studio.

  1. Check which episodes are already published on the YouTube channel and identify the newest one.
  2. During RSS submission in YouTube Studio, set the start date so importing begins after that newest existing episode.
  3. Review the feed and channel archive against the cutoff before publishing the imported episodes.

Check release dates before import

When an RSS release date is present, YouTube uses it to sort RSS-ingested videos; otherwise, it uses the YouTube publish date. YouTube says it does not verify the RSS release date. Some viewer surfaces may show the episode release date, while others may show the YouTube publish date. Correct the feed metadata before import if the dates or order matter to your archive.

Present the archive as a live stream

A live stream can offer a scheduled, continuous presentation of selected archive material, but keep it distinct from the on-demand podcast playlist. Use YouTube Live Control Room to schedule the stream, give it clear metadata, and consider enabling DVR so viewers can pause and rewind. If you reuse prior stream settings, review the metadata and stream key or other stream settings instead of assuming every reused value is right for this event. Afterward, place the replay in a separate playlist if it is not itself a full episode.

Protect the recording

YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be archived automatically, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording as a backup, monitor that the local file is growing during the broadcast, and check that the YouTube replay is available after the stream ends.

Clear rights before rebroadcasting

Having previously uploaded an episode for on-demand viewing does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to rebroadcast it live. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Check the rights for the episode, music, and any other included material before scheduling the stream; permissions may vary by content, territory, and license.

When RSS and existing uploads do not line up

  • An episode appears twice: Compare the channel’s existing uploads with the RSS feed, then correct the import cutoff so it starts after the newest episode already on YouTube.
  • Episodes appear in an unexpected order: Check whether the RSS feed supplies release dates and whether those dates are correct. YouTube uses those dates for RSS-ingested videos when present; without them, it uses the YouTube publish date.
  • A clip or replay is mixed into the podcast: Remove it from the canonical full-episode playlist and organize it separately unless it is a full episode of that show.
  • The stream replay is missing or incomplete: Check its duration. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so use the local recording if available and verify the YouTube replay after the event.
  • A live stream is interrupted or blocked: Review the stream’s status and settings in Live Control Room, and check that you have the rights to every included element, especially music. Keep a local backup for recovery.
