Yes. Steam Remote Play lets a Linux desktop play a game installed on another computer: the PC runs the game, captures its video and audio, and sends the stream to Linux; Linux sends keyboard, mouse, or gamepad input back to the PC. The Linux machine does not need to run the game natively.
Use the same Steam account on both computers, update both clients, launch the game once on the host PC, then open the Linux computer’s Steam Library and choose Stream. A wired connection is the best starting point. If the host is missing, check the network subnet, firewall ports, and router isolation before changing game settings.

What Steam Remote Play does
Remote Play is a host-and-client arrangement rather than a Linux compatibility layer. The host is the computer where Steam installs and launches the game. Steam captures the host’s rendered frames and audio, sends them across the local network, and accepts input from the Linux desktop as though the controls were connected to the host.
- Host PC: runs the game, performs the graphics and game simulation, and must be able to start the title normally.
- Linux desktop: displays the incoming video, plays the streamed audio, and returns keyboard, mouse, or controller input. It does not need a Linux build of the game.
- Steam account: both clients must be signed in to the same account for the normal computer-to-computer workflow.
Steam describes any two computers connected to Steam as usable for streaming. Its example of a Windows-only game streamed to a Linux Steam Machine illustrates the important distinction: the host’s operating system and hardware determine whether the game starts; the client mainly needs to decode the stream and accept input. That does not guarantee that every title, graphics driver, controller, or hardware combination will behave perfectly.

Requirements and compatibility
The host must launch the game
Install the game on the PC, sign in to Steam, and start it locally at least once. This verifies that the game is installed, current, and able to reach its launcher or first-run setup before you introduce streaming variables. Keep the host awake and leave Steam running whenever you want to connect from Linux.
The Linux desktop is a streaming client
The Linux computer does not need enough graphics performance to render the game itself, and the game does not have to be listed as Linux-compatible. It does need a working Steam client, a display capable of showing the selected stream, reliable network access to the host, and input devices that Steam can recognize.
Do not confuse Remote Play with Steam Play
Steam’s SteamOS + Linux store category and Steam Play compatibility work are about running supported Windows games on Linux. Remote Play is different: the game remains running on the host PC and Linux receives an interactive video stream. A title can therefore be playable through Remote Play even when it is not suitable for native Linux execution.

Non-Steam games may work when added to Steam, but Steam does not officially support every non-Steam title in this workflow. Store-page indicators for Remote Play Together or Steam Link describe other use cases and should not be treated as a guarantee for your particular host and client.

Set up the first stream
- Prepare the host PC. Sign in to Steam on the PC that has the game installed. Update Steam, install any game updates, and launch the game once. Close it after confirming that it reaches a playable screen, or leave it running while you test the connection.
- Prepare the Linux desktop. Update its Steam client and sign in with the same Steam account used on the host. Both clients should be online and running at the same time.
- Open the Linux Library. Find the game that is installed on the remote PC. Steam’s normal indicator changes from Play to Stream when it detects the host installation.
- Start streaming. Select Stream. Steam starts the game process on the host and opens the video and audio session on Linux. The host may show the game window, a Steam overlay, or a minimized session while Linux displays the stream.
- Test every input path. Move through a menu with the keyboard or mouse, test a gamepad if you use one, and verify that host audio reaches the Linux desktop. Test with a simple scene before changing resolution or quality settings.
- Establish a clean baseline. For the first test, connect the host to the router by Ethernet. Connect Linux by Ethernet too if practical. A direct wired baseline helps identify Wi-Fi interference later instead of making network and game problems look like one another.
If the Library still shows only Play, Steam has not detected a usable remote installation. Keep both clients signed in, confirm that the host is awake and running Steam, and continue with the network checks below.
Choose the network connection
Steam recommends wired networking for the most consistent Remote Play experience. Network quality affects both responsiveness and picture stability: a fast internet plan does not compensate for interference or an unreliable link inside your home.
| Connection | What to expect | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet to the router | Usually the most consistent path and the easiest baseline for diagnosis. It avoids radio interference and variable signal strength. | Use for the host whenever possible; wiring the Linux client as well gives the clearest test. |
| 5 GHz Wi-Fi | Steam identifies 802.11ac and 802.11n on 5 GHz as options. The band often has less interference than 2.4 GHz, but it has shorter range and can weaken through walls. | Use when Ethernet is impractical and the client has a clear, strong connection to the access point. |
| 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or powerline networking | May work, but interference, distance, and electrical conditions can create intermittent stutter or disconnects. | Use only after testing; reduce stream demands if the link is unstable. |
| Guest, public, workplace, school, or isolated networks | Steam says Remote Play is unsupported in most cases because client isolation, captive portals, or firewall policy can prevent the computers from discovering or reaching each other. | Move both computers to a private network you control. |
These are connection characteristics, not guaranteed latency or frame-rate figures. Your router placement, channel congestion, cabling, and simultaneous traffic determine the result.
Adjust stream quality without hiding the real problem
Start with the default stream, then change one variable at a time. Steam’s suggested quality choices are Balanced and Fast; lower-quality modes trade image detail for a stream that is easier for a busy or interference-prone network to carry.

- Lower the bandwidth limit when other devices compete for the same link or when bursts of traffic cause freezes.
- Reduce the game or stream resolution if the host encoder, client decoder, or network cannot sustain the selected image size.
- Disable vertical sync in the game as a diagnostic step when it contributes to uneven frame delivery. Re-enable it if tearing becomes distracting and the stream is otherwise stable.
- Use the performance overlay while testing. Steam says it can identify the active encoder and decoder, which helps separate a network problem from a hardware-acceleration problem.
Do not compensate for a missing host or blocked firewall by selecting Fast quality. Quality controls affect an established session; they do not make two isolated computers discover one another.
When the Linux client cannot see the host
Work through discovery and firewall checks in this order:
- Confirm Steam is open and signed in on both computers with the same account. The host must be awake, not suspended, and connected to the same home network.
- Check that both machines are on the same IP subnet. A guest SSID, separate VLAN, or mesh-node policy can place them on different networks even when the Wi-Fi name looks similar.
- Disable router access-point isolation, also called client isolation or wireless isolation. This feature intentionally prevents devices on the same Wi-Fi from contacting one another.
- Review the host firewall and allow Steam to listen on the documented streaming ports. Steam lists UDP 27031, UDP 27036, TCP 27036, and TCP 27037.
- Check whether another program is already using UDP 27036. Steam specifically identifies that conflict as a possible reason the computers cannot see each other.
- Restart Steam on both computers after changing firewall or router rules, then reopen the Linux Library.
Do not expose these ports to the public internet as a substitute for fixing local network discovery. The documented workflow assumes a private path between the computers; public, captive-portal, and isolated networks are commonly incompatible.

Start with the physical path
Connect the host directly to the router with Ethernet and test again. If that is not possible, move the Linux desktop closer to the access point, use a clear 5 GHz connection, and stop large downloads or backups temporarily. Steam identifies wireless interference and powerline instability as common causes of poor performance.

Reduce the load gradually
Choose Balanced or Fast, lower the bandwidth limit, reduce the game or stream resolution, and lower demanding visual settings on the host. Change one setting, play the same scene for a few minutes, and keep the change only if it improves consistency. These are vendor recommendations rather than measured performance guarantees for a particular computer or router.
Separate network symptoms from rendering symptoms
A stream that pauses, drops frames in bursts, or recovers when other traffic stops points toward the network path. A stable connection with a persistently smeared image, black frames, or encoder warnings points toward host capture, encoding, decoding, or graphics drivers. Use Steam’s performance overlay to see which encoder and decoder are active before changing several options at once.
Fix a black screen or persistent smearing
- Update the graphics driver on the host and the Linux client. Reboot both systems if the driver installer requires it.
- Run a short test with the host’s hardware-encoding option disabled in Steam’s advanced host settings. Hardware encoding is normally useful, but a driver or encoder combination can produce an unusable picture.
- If the host image is being encoded correctly but Linux displays corruption, test with hardware decoding disabled in Steam’s advanced client settings.
- Use the performance overlay to verify whether the active encoder or decoder changed after each test. Re-enable the faster option if the image is correct and the stream remains smooth.
- Retest with a lower stream quality or resolution. If that works, increase quality one step at a time until you find the limit of the current hardware and network.
Do not assume a black screen means the game failed to launch. Check the host monitor or task switcher to determine whether the game is running, and treat capture, encoding, and decoding as separate failure points.

Fix missing game audio
- Play a sound on the host outside the game and confirm that the host’s output device is not muted.
- Check Steam’s mute state on the host and the Linux client, including any per-application volume mixer.
- Verify that the Linux desktop is sending audio to the intended speakers or headset rather than a disconnected display output.
- If audio still fails, inspect the host streaming log for audio errors, then restart Steam and repeat the test with a simple game menu.
Changing video quality will not repair a muted host or an incorrect client output device, so check the audio path before reducing resolution.

Fix keyboard, mouse, and controller input
Client-side checks
Confirm that Steam recognizes the keyboard, mouse, or controller on the Linux desktop before starting the session. For a controller, open Steam’s controller configuration or device view and verify that button presses register. A device that Linux or Steam cannot see locally cannot be forwarded reliably to the host.
Linux host permissions are a different case
The Linux permission note in Steam’s documentation applies when Linux is the host, not when Linux is merely the streaming client. For a Linux host, Steam needs read/write access to /dev/uinput or /dev/input/uinput to create the virtual input path used by streamed controller input. Check that permission only when the Linux computer is running the game and acting as host.
Steam also documents that rumble is not supported for Linux machines. A controller can still provide buttons and sticks while vibration remains unavailable.

Test the session with keyboard and mouse first. If those work but the gamepad does not, disconnect other controllers, verify the intended device is selected in Steam, and test a different input mode if the controller offers one. Avoid changing host game settings until Steam’s client-side device test succeeds.
What to expect from game and hardware compatibility
The host PC’s ability to launch the game is the main game-side requirement for this Linux-client setup. Anti-cheat systems, launchers, overlays, unusual display modes, and games that demand exclusive control of input can still cause title-specific problems even when ordinary games stream correctly.
Steam’s statement that games can be streamed between a user’s computers should be read alongside the practical limits of your hardware and drivers. It is not a promise that every title will support every controller, resolution, overlay, or capture path. Keep the host game and graphics drivers current, and test the title locally on the host before diagnosing Remote Play.
A repeatable diagnostic checklist
- Discovery: same Steam account, both clients running, host awake, same subnet, no client isolation.
- Firewall: allow UDP 27031 and 27036 plus TCP 27036 and 27037 on the host; check for another program using UDP 27036.
- Network quality: test Ethernet first, then a strong 5 GHz connection; stop competing traffic and avoid guest or public networks.
- Stream settings: try Balanced or Fast, lower bandwidth and resolution, and test vertical-sync changes only after the network path is sound.
- Video: update drivers, inspect the performance overlay, and test host hardware encoding or client hardware decoding separately.
- Audio: verify host output, Steam mute states, Linux output selection, and the host streaming log.
- Input: confirm Steam sees the controller on Linux; apply the
uinputpermission check only when Linux is the host; expect no rumble on Linux.
Bottom line
To play a PC game on a Linux desktop with Steam Remote Play, leave the game on a capable host PC, use the same Steam account on both machines, and select Stream from the Linux Library after the host has launched the game once. Ethernet is the most dependable starting point. When something fails, check discovery and firewall rules first, then the network path, and only afterward change encoding, decoding, or game quality settings.
