To loop a local music playlist on a YouTube live stream with OBS, install VLC, add a VLC Video source to an OBS scene, load your audio files, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube with an encoder stream and test the broadcast. “24/7” is your intended schedule, not a guarantee: playback depends on your computer, power, internet connection, local files, and stream health.
Before you start: check music rights and YouTube eligibility
Only use music you are authorized to retransmit on YouTube Live. Buying a track, finding it online, or being able to play it through a personal music account does not by itself grant public live-streaming rights. Confirm that your permission covers the territories where you expect viewers and, if you plan to keep the broadcast recording, the archived stream too. YouTube for Artists advises music channels to coordinate with their label or distributor when using copyright-protected music (Going live for music channels).
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material from another live broadcast. A match can result in a replacement image, interruption, or termination. YouTube also warns that licensed content can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist; ask the rights owner or distributor to confirm any necessary allowlisting before you go live (Copyright issues with live streams).
YouTube’s current encoder-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance and YouTube Studio before scheduling, since requirements and workflow can change.

Install OBS and VLC, then prepare your playlist
- Install OBS Studio and VLC media player. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed or it will not appear as an available source. The OBS documentation lists support on Windows, macOS, and Linux; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as specified in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Gather permitted local audio files. OBS documents common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Keep the files on storage that will remain connected and available while streaming; a playlist cannot continue if its source files disappear or become inaccessible.
- Decide whether you want a fixed order or a shuffled rotation. A fixed order suits programs that need to progress predictably; shuffle is available if you prefer randomized playback. Consider making a short test playlist first so you can check transitions and volume before loading a long set.
Add the playlist to an OBS scene and make it loop
- Open the scene you plan to broadcast in OBS. In the Sources dock, click the + button, choose VLC Video, and create or select a source. If VLC Video is absent, confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
- In the source properties, add the audio files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want if shuffle is off.
- Enable Loop Playlist. This restarts the playlist after the final item. Set Shuffle Playlist according to your preference; the documented default is off.
- Set Visibility Behaviour deliberately. Choose whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. For a music stream, continuing while the source is hidden may be appropriate if another scene or layer can cover it; pausing or stopping can prevent unintended playback when you switch scenes.
OBS also has a separate Media Source for an individual local file, with a single-file Loop control. Use VLC Video when you need a playlist; do not confuse looping one file with looping a multi-file playlist. The controls and supported media types are described in the OBS Media Sources guide.
Build the scene and check the sound
A live music broadcast needs a visual layer as well as audio: for example, a still image you have the right to use or a visualizer. Add it in the same scene and arrange the Sources list so the intended visual is visible. OBS layers sources, and a source higher in the list can obscure one below it; see the OBS Sources Guide.

- Start playlist playback and confirm the audio meter moves in OBS.
- Listen through the preview or a local monitoring setup for clipping, silence, abrupt transitions, or unexpectedly loud files.
- Confirm the visual appears as intended and that the VLC source is not hidden or disabled.
- Check that the playlist files remain available at their saved locations for the entire planned broadcast.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup for an encoder broadcast and follow the current prompts to create or select the stream. Copy the stream key from the YouTube workflow.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose YouTube if presented as a service, then connect your account or enter the stream key using the available setup option. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on stream or share it publicly.
- Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for incoming video and audio. Confirm OBS reports that it is streaming and that the playlist is advancing.
- Run a private or otherwise limited test before promoting a long broadcast. Check the stream on a separate device or browser, including its audio, visual, and playback continuity. Monitor the Live Control Room and OBS status during the stream; neither the software documentation nor YouTube’s ingestion documentation promises uninterrupted 24-hour operation.
YouTube’s HLS documentation explains how media segments are ordered and assembled into a decodable stream, but that protocol-level material is not a setup recipe for an OBS local playlist. OBS’s VLC playlist is the relevant control for rotating your local files (Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS).
What “24/7” requires in practice
OBS can repeat the playlist, but it does not remove the dependencies of a locally run broadcast. Your computer must stay on and awake, the internet connection and power must remain available, the audio files and VLC source must keep working, and YouTube must continue accepting the stream. A restart, software update, network interruption, missing file, or copyright match can break continuity. Plan monitoring and a way to respond rather than treating a loop setting as an uptime guarantee.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video does not appear in Sources: install VLC, restart OBS, and confirm that a 64-bit OBS installation is paired with 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after its last track: open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist; the single-file Media Source loop setting is not the same control.
- There is no sound: verify that the VLC source is enabled and visible, the correct files are in its playlist, playback has started, and the OBS audio meter registers activity. Check the scene and source visibility behavior if sound stops after switching scenes.
- The stream is live but YouTube shows a blank or unexpected visual: check the scene preview and source ordering. A layer above the image can cover it; confirm the intended source is visible and enabled.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast: inspect Live Control Room notices and resolve any third-party content issue with the rights owner. If you are licensed, ask whether the channel must be added to the Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption.
- The broadcast stops during a long run: check OBS stream status, YouTube Studio, power and sleep settings, network availability, and whether the source files remain accessible. Restart only after you know the cause, and do not assume the playlist loop will reconnect the encoder stream by itself.
