You can stream a local news radio station to YouTube without a studio camera: send the station’s audio through an encoder to YouTube Live and pair it with a static image or authorized graphic. Before going live, confirm the channel is eligible, test the audio and connection, and make sure the station’s rights cover online live distribution and any archive.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube’s getting-started guidance also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- An audio feed from the station and an encoder capable of sending it to YouTube Live. YouTube supports encoder streaming; a camera is not required. You can use software on a computer or a dedicated hardware encoder.
- A static image or graphic scene that identifies the station or program, using only visual material the station is authorized to use. This is a practical way to present an audio-led stream, not a visual format mandated by YouTube.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder settings you choose.
- Rights for the material in the broadcast, including music, news, syndicated segments, advertisements, and any other third-party content. Check whether permissions cover both live online distribution and an archived recording, as well as the relevant territories and uses.
How to set up a camera-free YouTube radio stream
- Check channel eligibility. Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the channel can create a live stream. Verify the channel and check that no live-streaming restriction has applied in the past 90 days.
- Choose an encoder. Use software running on a computer or a dedicated hardware encoder. YouTube documents both kinds of encoder workflow; it does not require a camera or a dedicated hardware unit. The right choice depends on the station’s existing equipment and staffing.
- Build the visual scene. Add a static station image or a simple graphic scene with the station name, program title, or other authorized artwork. Check that text is legible and that the image does not include material the station lacks permission to use. YouTube documents encoder streams and overlays; using a static visual for an audio stream is an implementation choice.
- Route the station audio into the encoder. Select the correct audio input or feed, then monitor it at the encoder. Confirm that the intended on-air audio is present and that no unintended source, silence, or feedback is being sent.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow the encoder-stream setup flow and obtain the stream key and server details shown for that stream. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to the stream.
- Enter YouTube’s stream details in the encoder. Use the server and stream-key values provided in Live Control Room. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose only formats your encoder supports.
- Set and test the audio and video output. YouTube’s recommended stereo audio settings are a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. Select video settings that suit the graphic and the encoder rather than assuming a camera-oriented preset is necessary. Test the stream before the scheduled broadcast and check stream health while live. Exact video settings and required connection capacity depend on the encoder and internet connection; YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance provides the platform’s current recommendations.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Confirm the station audio is audible, the graphic is visible, and Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream before you begin or announce the program.
- Decide whether to keep an archive. If you retain a recording or enable an archive, confirm the station’s permissions cover that use too. Rights for a live broadcast do not automatically establish rights for a lasting replay.
Resolve music and other rights issues before broadcast
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including music licensing rights, and to meet applicable regulatory requirements, including broadcast licenses where required. The station should check its agreements and applicable rules for its jurisdiction; the platform terms do not determine the station’s specific legal obligations. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Its guidance says a placeholder image may replace the stream when third-party content is identified, and the stream may be interrupted or terminated if the content remains. YouTube also says a stream may be interrupted even when the station has licensed the material unless the relevant rights owner has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Contact the relevant owners and resolve any required allowlisting before going live. See YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions.
Choose the setup that fits the newsroom
| Decision | Option | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding | Software encoder on a computer | Useful when the newsroom already has a suitable computer and wants a software-based setup. YouTube documents software encoder workflows. |
| Encoding | Dedicated hardware encoder | An alternative when the newsroom prefers a dedicated encoding device. YouTube documents hardware encoders; the available sources do not establish a required model or minimum specification. |
| Visual | Simple station artwork | Appropriate when a clear station or program identity is enough for an audio-led broadcast. |
| Visual | More information-rich graphic | Can present additional authorized information, provided it remains legible and does not distract from or misrepresent the program. |
| Replay | Live-only | Consider this if the station does not want to retain a replay, while still confirming rights for the live online broadcast. |
| Replay | Archived stream | Choose this only after confirming permissions also cover the archived version and its intended availability. |
There is no reason to buy camera equipment solely to put a radio broadcast on YouTube. Start with the audio route, encoder, authorized graphic, and rights review; add equipment only if the newsroom’s chosen workflow requires it.

- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Confirm the account meets YouTube’s stated minimum age requirement for streaming.
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the encoder is using the server and stream key from the correct Live Control Room stream, that the encoder is running, and that the network can upload steadily.
- The audio is missing or incorrect: Recheck the encoder’s selected input and confirm the station feed reaches it. Monitor the audio during a test before the broadcast.
- The stream health is poor or unstable: Run a test and check stream health in Live Control Room. Review the encoder’s supported output settings and the connection’s upload capacity; reduce settings if the connection cannot sustain them.
- The stream shows a placeholder or is interrupted: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Check the station’s rights and contact the relevant rights owner about Content ID allowlisting before restarting the broadcast.
- The replay is unavailable or creates a rights concern: Revisit whether the station’s permissions cover archived use, not just the live broadcast, and adjust the archive choice accordingly.
