How to Stream a Jazz Internet Radio Station to YouTube with Live Track Metadata

To stream a jazz internet radio station to YouTube with a live track display, send the station’s audio through an encoder to a YouTube live broadcast, then place the current artist and song title in the video as an overlay. YouTube’s broadcast title and description are event-level details; they are not a documented field for updating the viewer-facing display with each song. The exact audio route and metadata connection depend on your station’s feed and automation system.

How the audio and track display fit together

Think of the setup as two connected pipelines: one carries the station’s audio to YouTube, and the other supplies current track information to a visual layer in the video.

  • Broadcast: YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats a liveBroadcast as the scheduled or live event, with details such as title, description, status, schedule, and recording settings. A broadcast corresponds to one YouTube video.
  • Media feed: A liveStream represents the audio-video content sent to YouTube and is associated with a broadcast.
  • Track display: Artist and title information must be rendered visibly in the video, for example through an overlay or browser source that receives data from the station’s automation system or metadata endpoint.

The official YouTube Live Streaming API overview and LiveBroadcasts reference describe broadcast-level metadata, not a live per-song label that updates the YouTube player’s event details.

Before you set it up: confirm music rights

Do not assume that rights to broadcast music on an internet radio station automatically cover a YouTube simulcast. Confirm permission for the intended music, territories, live transmission, and any archived replay with the relevant rights holders or distributor. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when a match remains. YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.”

A licence alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID. Its live Content ID matching feature is limited to certain partners using Studio Content Manager, with requirements that include a proven Content ID record, time-sensitive live content, global rights, and exclusive ownership. It is not a workaround for missing music rights. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and audio feed

  1. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Enter an accurate broadcast title and description and choose the applicable visibility, schedule, and archive settings. These describe the broadcast as a whole, not each track.
  2. Choose an audio route that supports your station’s actual feed. Identify whether the station audio is available as a local file, audio-device input, or network stream, and check that the selected encoder can ingest that exact format. The API distinguishes the broadcast from the media feed; the encoder/input route is what supplies the latter.
  3. Connect the encoder to the intended YouTube stream. Use the stream details associated with the correct broadcast, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming audio is reaching the right event before you start the public broadcast.
  4. Check the actual output. Listen for clean, continuous audio and confirm that the event shown in Studio is the one you intend to put live. Keep the Studio dashboard available during launch so you can respond if YouTube flags a match.

Can OBS take an internet radio URL directly?

Not necessarily. OBS is a possible encoding and scene-composition tool, but its Media Sources documentation lists local formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; it does not establish that every Icecast or SHOUTcast URL, or every radio host’s feed, can be opened directly as an OBS Media Source. Confirm the station’s protocol and format against the selected OBS input method before relying on it.

If the feed is not supported by the route you plan to use, choose an input/encoder path that supports the station’s actual output. Do not treat a URL that plays in a web browser as proof that it will work as an encoder input.

Build the live now-playing overlay

  1. Find the authoritative track data. Use the station’s automation output or a reliable metadata endpoint that reports the currently playing artist and title. The appropriate source depends on the station’s setup; no specific ready-made OBS integration is established here.
  2. Expose that data to a visual layer. Connect it to an overlay, browser source, or equivalent scene element in the encoder. The layer should display text in the video, rather than attempting to change the YouTube broadcast title for every song.
  3. Design for real-world metadata. Test a track change, missing artist/title fields, unusually long titles, and special characters. Include a fallback such as the station name when track data is unavailable, and make sure text remains readable against the video.
  4. Verify the full path live or in a private test. Confirm the overlay changes when the station metadata changes, and separately confirm the audio is audible on YouTube. A working overlay does not prove the audio feed is healthy, or vice versa.

Preview, monitor, and troubleshoot

  • No incoming audio in YouTube Studio: Check that the encoder is using an input method that supports the station’s actual feed, that the correct broadcast/stream association is selected, and that the encoder is sending audio.
  • Station plays locally but OBS cannot ingest it: Local playback in a browser or player does not establish OBS compatibility. Recheck the feed format and the specific input route; the Media Sources documentation lists local audio formats, not universal support for web-radio URLs.
  • Track text is blank or stale: Check whether the automation system or metadata endpoint is supplying current data and whether the overlay is reading that source. Test fallback behavior for missing metadata.
  • Track text does not match the song: Check the station’s metadata update timing and the overlay’s refresh path. Compare the displayed values with the automation system’s current output.
  • YouTube interrupts or terminates the stream: Review YouTube Studio’s notice and the applicable rights and allowlisting status with the rights owner or distributor. Do not assume a station licence by itself prevents Content ID interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is an option if your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, rather than transmit a live radio feed with a changing metadata overlay. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud; it does not go live from a camera, and its service streams to YouTube.
