To stream a folder of prerecorded videos to YouTube Live in alphabetical order, first generate a playlist whose entries are already sorted the way you want, then play that list through an encoder such as OBS and send the encoder output to YouTube using its stream key and ingestion endpoint. OBS’s VLC Video source respects playlist order when shuffle is off, but it does not automatically scan a folder or define what “alphabetical” means.
What you need to set up
The workflow has four separate parts: the source files, a deterministically sorted playlist, a player/encoder, and YouTube’s live ingestion connection. Having a server and videos does not by itself create an ordered live stream; you must decide how filenames are sorted and make that order explicit in the playlist.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A server with the video files and enough resources to run the selected playback and encoding software.
- A playlist-capable source. OBS’s VLC Video source is one documented option; it requires VLC to be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
- A YouTube Live event or stream and its current ingestion URL and stream key. YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes ingestion addresses and stream names. YouTube LiveStreams API reference
- A plan for unattended startup, failure recovery, and playlist updates if the server must operate without someone logged in at a desktop. Those behaviors depend on your operating system and deployment; they are not automatic consequences of using OBS.
No separate capture card, hardware encoder, NAS, or external drive is established as necessary when you already have the server and source files. The core task is configuring software, the playlist, and YouTube ingestion.
Choose what “alphabetical” means
File names can sort differently depending on the rule. With simple lexicographic sorting, clip10.mp4 may come before clip2.mp4. A natural, case-insensitive sort usually places clip2.mp4 before clip10.mp4 and treats upper- and lowercase letters alike. Neither YouTube nor the cited OBS documentation defines the sorting behavior for your folder, so select a rule before building the playlist.

- Simple lexicographic order: compares filename characters in sequence; useful when filenames are consistently zero-padded, such as
clip02andclip10. - Natural, case-insensitive order: treats digit runs as numbers and ignores case; useful for names such as
Episode 2andEpisode 10. - Folder scope: decide whether to include only files directly inside one folder or include subfolders too. Do not assume OBS performs recursive discovery.
Generate or curate a playlist file/list in the exact intended sequence. The cited OBS documentation describes adding media files to a VLC playlist; it does not establish automatic directory watching, recursive scanning, a particular sort rule, or automatic addition of later files.
Build and verify the ordered playlist in OBS
- Install compatible software. Install OBS and VLC on the server. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. OBS lists common formats for its Media Source, including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm; the VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for broader media support. OBS Media Sources
- Create a scene and add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will be streamed. Add the playlist entries in the order you generated or curated. Confirm the source can open each file before setting the stream live.
- Set playlist behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to return to the first entry after the last one. Keep Shuffle Playlist disabled; OBS documents shuffle as off by default for this source, and the playlist order is used when shuffle is off. OBS Media Sources
- Check the sequence locally. Preview the start, several transitions, and the final item before relying on the stream. Confirm the playlist’s actual order, audio/video playback, and what happens at the end. Do not assume every combination of files will transition gaplessly.
- Decide how changes will be handled. If files are added, removed, or renamed, regenerate or edit the playlist and verify the new order. The cited OBS page does not establish live folder refresh or a directory watcher.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or prepare the live event in YouTube Studio. Obtain the event’s current stream key and the matching ingestion endpoint shown for the chosen protocol. You can also automate event and stream setup through YouTube’s Live Streaming API, but that is a separate implementation path. LiveStreams API reference
- Choose an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder. For a conventional software-encoder workflow that needs low latency, RTMPS is YouTube’s documented secure option for ordinary content. It is RTMP sent through SSL and requires the correct RTMPS endpoint on port 443. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide
- Enter the key and endpoint in the encoder. Use the protocol’s matching server URL and the event’s stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration. Do not paste an RTMPS key into an HLS or DASH setup: the endpoint and protocol must match.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream settings before broadcasting again.
- Test privately or with an unlisted event. Check that YouTube receives the picture and sound, and validate the playlist start, order, loop behavior, reconnection behavior, and the effect of file changes before relying on a public broadcast.
Ingestion protocols are not interchangeable. RTMPS carries a continuous RTMP-style stream over SSL. HLS sends video segments and has higher latency: YouTube states, “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream

| Option | What it does | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Continuous RTMP over SSL. | YouTube describes it as a good choice for ordinary content needing low latency; use the correct endpoint and port 443. RTMPS ingestion guide |
| HLS | Segment-based ingestion with higher latency than continuous RTMP-style ingestion. | Requires an HLS-capable encoder and YouTube’s HLS-specific segment and playlist requirements. YouTube HLS setup |
| DASH | A separate ingestion protocol supported by YouTube. | It has its own manifest and segment requirements; do not assume a general media player or encoder supports YouTube DASH ingestion. Protocol comparison |
| OBS VLC Video source | Plays local media; it is not an ingestion protocol. | Requires VLC. The playlist order controls playback when shuffle is off. OBS Media Sources |
If you choose HLS, follow its separate requirements
HLS is not simply a different server URL for an RTMPS encoder. You need an HLS-capable encoder configured for YouTube’s requirements. YouTube specifies segments of 1–4 seconds, TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are HLS-specific constraints, not settings to apply to a conventional RTMPS stream. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream

A server can run without a person at its console, but unattended operation requires explicit deployment work. Confirm that your chosen player and encoder can start after a reboot, continue when no desktop session is open, recover after a process or network failure, and use the intended playlist after files change. The cited software and YouTube protocol documents do not specify a universal service setup or guarantee those behaviors for every operating system.

- Run a private or unlisted end-to-end test before using a public event.
- Check the server’s behavior after a restart and after a brief network interruption.
- Verify that the stream resumes with the expected playlist position or documented restart behavior; do not assume it will resume seamlessly.
- Watch YouTube’s live preview and status while testing, and confirm the selected event is the one receiving the encoder output.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Files play in an unexpected order | The playlist was not generated with the intended sort, shuffle is enabled, or the list contains a different sequence than expected. | Inspect the playlist entry by entry; confirm the sorting rule and turn off Shuffle Playlist. |
| A file does not play in the VLC source | VLC may be missing, its bitness may not match OBS, or the particular file may not be supported by the installed playback components. | Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; test the file independently and consider a format supported by your setup. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The endpoint, key, or selected protocol may not match the event. | Recheck the current YouTube event’s ingestion details, use the matching endpoint and key, and confirm RTMPS uses the RTMPS endpoint on port 443. |
| The stream stops after the last video | Looping may be disabled or the playlist may not contain the expected final entry. | Enable Loop Playlist if continuous repetition is intended and test the end-of-list behavior before going public. |
| New folder files do not appear | The source is using the existing playlist; automatic folder discovery is not established by the cited OBS documentation. | Update or regenerate the ordered playlist and verify the resulting list before restarting or changing the live source. |
| The process stops when nobody is logged in or after a restart | The server’s unattended startup and recovery behavior has not been configured. | Configure and test the operating system’s service or scheduled-start mechanism for the chosen player/encoder. Exact steps depend on the OS and deployment. |
| HLS output is rejected or delayed | The encoder may not meet YouTube’s HLS segment, format, request, or playlist constraints; segment delivery also introduces more latency than RTMPS. | Check 1–4 second TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, absence of byte ranges, and no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before streaming, confirm you have the rights needed for every video and audio track, including music and images included in the recordings. A playlist’s being prerecorded does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube may apply its copyright and live-stream policies to the broadcast; review the current requirements in YouTube Studio and the relevant official Help pages before using material you did not create or license. Also consider whether a channel built around repetitive or reused material meets YouTube’s current monetization rules; copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions.
