You can stream a folder of videos to YouTube Live from a headless Ubuntu VPS with FFmpeg: create an ordered playlist, send it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL using the stream key from Live Control Room, then verify the preview and stream health. A playlist plus a systemd service is one practical implementation—not a YouTube-prescribed, universally compatible recipe—so test your files and output before relying on it for a long broadcast.
How the setup works
FFmpeg reads the video files on the VPS, produces a continuous audio/video stream, and sends it to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Control Room supplies the ingest URL and stream key. A headless server needs no desktop streaming application for this arrangement.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe details depend on your Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, source-file formats, VPS CPU and sustained upload capacity. In particular, no single stream-copy command works reliably for every mix of files. Treat the playlist and service approach below as an implementation pattern, and validate it with your own media.
Prepare an ordered playlist
Choose the files and sequence
Decide the order deliberately instead of relying on a shell wildcard, whose ordering may not match your intended schedule. Create a playlist using a format supported by your FFmpeg workflow, with each entry pointing to a file on the VPS. The exact playlist syntax and command depend on how you configure FFmpeg; YouTube does not prescribe a folder-playlist format.

- Confirm every listed file exists and is readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- Check the playlist order and test transitions, including the last-to-first transition if the list will repeat.
- Compare codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio layouts across the files. Mixed properties can cause discontinuities or prevent a copied stream from working.
- If the files are incompatible, plan to normalize or re-encode them to a consistent output profile. Test the CPU load and the result on your VPS.
Choose stream copy or re-encoding
Stream copy avoids decoding and encoding the media, which can reduce CPU demand, but is appropriate only when the inputs and playlist transitions are compatible with the output you need. Re-encoding gives you control over bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes and can normalize varied sources, but uses VPS CPU. This is an engineering trade-off, not a guarantee that either method will work for arbitrary files; test representative clips and transitions.
Set a YouTube-compatible output profile
For a conventional SDR stream, H.264 video with AAC audio is a common supported combination. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio over RTMP/RTMPS. Set the output resolution and frame rate to suit the source material and the VPS’s measured upload capacity rather than upscaling by default.

Encoder settings to check
- Protocol: YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection.
- Video bitrate: Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 1080p30, YouTube Help lists H.264 at a 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 14 Mbps; for AV1/H.265 at 1080p30, it lists a 4 Mbps minimum and recommends 10 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof your VPS route can sustain those rates.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Match the output to your source and selected profile.
- Audio: YouTube supports AAC or MP3. Its guidance lists stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, and 5.1 audio at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- SDR color: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth for SDR.
For another reference point, YouTube Help lists 720p30 H.264 at a 3 Mbps minimum and recommends 8 Mbps. The encoder recommendations are platform guidance; choose a rate that your VPS can sustain and confirm the actual stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations (accessed 2026).

Get the ingest URL and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select or create the live stream you intend to use.
- In the stream settings, copy the ingest URL and stream key. To reveal the RTMPS URL, use the lock control if it is hidden.
- Configure FFmpeg with the exact RTMPS URL and key. Depending on the encoder, the URL and key may be separate inputs or combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; follow the format that FFmpeg’s selected configuration expects. - Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, and logs. Restrict access to any configuration file containing it, and rotate it if exposed.
YouTube’s API describes the ingest address as the primary URL receiving the encoder’s video and the stream name as the assigned stream name. YouTube recommends RTMPS; if you encounter a connection or certificate issue, check that the URL uses rtmps and, where needed, try port 443. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the RTMPS/TLS connection. See YouTube’s liveStreams API documentation and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Run FFmpeg on the VPS
Install or select an FFmpeg build appropriate for your Ubuntu version and verify that it supports the protocol and codecs in your chosen profile. Then configure it to read the playlist, loop or advance through the files as intended, encode or copy the streams appropriately, and publish to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
There is no universal command to paste here: playlist syntax, looping behavior, stream mapping, encoding flags, and endpoint formatting depend on the installed FFmpeg build and your files. A third-party Ubuntu example demonstrates an FFmpeg-only pipeline and a systemd service, but it is an example architecture rather than an independently verified recipe. Test your exact configuration with representative files before making the broadcast public.

Keep the process running with systemd
If unattended operation matters, run FFmpeg under a supervisor such as systemd. A service can restart a failed local FFmpeg process, but that alone does not guarantee network continuity, correct handling of YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle, or a healthy resumed stream. Check service logs and YouTube’s preview and health status after a restart.
Make sure the service runs as an account that can read the playlist and media and access the protected configuration containing the key. Avoid placing the key directly in a publicly readable service definition. The systemd approach is an operational pattern; its exact unit settings should reflect your Ubuntu version and security setup.
Preflight before a public or long-running stream
- Start the configured FFmpeg process and confirm it can read the playlist without file or permission errors.
- In Live Control Room, verify that YouTube receives the stream and that the preview shows the expected video and audio.
- Check resolution, frame rate, motion, and audio, including a transition between playlist items.
- Review YouTube’s stream health and messages. Do not assume a running FFmpeg process means the broadcast is healthy.
- Test for long enough to observe the playlist behavior and any service restart or network issue relevant to your use case before relying on it.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Its API health guidance includes possible problems such as low or high video bitrate, missing audio, unsupported audio codec, audio sample-rate issues, keyframe interval problems, frame-rate mismatch, and unsuitable stream configuration. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and the liveStreams API health documentation, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not receive video
Check that you copied the current ingest URL and stream key from the intended stream, that FFmpeg uses them in the expected format, and that the VPS can reach the endpoint through its firewall and network path. For RTMPS connection or certificate problems, verify the scheme and check whether port 443 is needed.
The preview has no sound
Confirm that the source files actually contain audio and that the output maps a supported audio stream. Check the selected audio codec and sample rate against YouTube’s guidance, then review the health messages for missing audio or codec and sample-rate issues.
The stream buffers or YouTube flags its health
Compare the sent bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check that the VPS upload route can sustain the chosen bitrate, that CBR is configured as intended, and that the keyframe interval is two seconds or less than or equal to YouTube’s four-second maximum.

Playback breaks at a file boundary
Inspect the files’ codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio layouts, then test each transition. If the properties differ, use a normalization or re-encoding workflow and verify the output. Do not assume stream copy will bridge arbitrary media cleanly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The service restarts but the broadcast is still unhealthy
Check systemd and FFmpeg logs, then independently check Live Control Room. A local process restart can address a stopped process; it cannot establish that YouTube has resumed a healthy broadcast or that the underlying network issue is gone.
