FFmpeg is the natural fit for a headless setup; OBS is an option if you prefer a graphical interface. Neither a loop nor a running systemd service guarantees that a YouTube broadcast will stay live indefinitely: test your actual files and monitor stream health.
What the setup needs to do
A continuous broadcast has two separate jobs: play files continuously on the Linux host, and maintain the encoder connection to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Streaming API models the live stream resource separately from the broadcast resource, while the encoder sends video to the ingest details configured for the broadcast. Google’s LiveStreams documentation describes the stream resource and ingest configuration.
- Prepare the media: make sure the host can read the files and decide their playback order and what should happen when the final file ends.
- Set up the YouTube broadcast: in YouTube Studio, create or configure a live broadcast, then get the current ingest URL and stream key from its stream settings.
- Configure playback and encoding: use FFmpeg or OBS to sequence the files, encode or pass through their media as appropriate, and send the stream to YouTube.
- Test and monitor: test representative video and audio before relying on the setup, and check YouTube Studio’s stream health while it is running.
Channel eligibility, account status, content rights, Linux distribution, FFmpeg build, file formats, and upload capacity vary. Confirm that the channel can go live and that you have the rights needed to broadcast every file; do not assume a folder of media is automatically eligible to stream.
Choose a Linux workflow
FFmpeg for a headless setup
FFmpeg suits a scripted server or computer without a desktop. It can be incorporated into a workflow that selects local files and sends a stream to YouTube. Third-party projects demonstrate approaches using FFmpeg with systemd on small Linux hosts and Ubuntu VPSs, but these are examples, not verified universal configurations: YouTube-AutoEncoder and 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes. The cited project names do not establish a command that works for every distribution, FFmpeg version, or media library.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before building a long-running service, decide how files are ordered, whether playback should repeat at the end, and whether the workflow re-encodes media or attempts to copy streams. A mixed folder may contain incompatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or audio formats. Test the real collection, including transitions between unlike files, on the actual machine. There is no single validated FFmpeg command for arbitrary mixed-format folders established here; check the syntax and behavior against your installed FFmpeg version and inputs.
OBS for a graphical workflow
OBS is an alternative if you want to configure and watch a stream through a GUI. It can send to an RTMP destination, but an OBS interface by itself does not settle how a folder is sequenced, looped, or recovered after a process or host failure. Plan and test those parts separately. The available OBS forum example concerns multiple destinations and is not a complete folder-looping guide: OBS Studio: Stream to multiple platforms or channels at once.

Local Linux machine or VPS
A local computer is workable if it can access the files, sustain the chosen encoding load, and keep a stable network connection. A VPS may suit a remote, always-on deployment, but then you must arrange media storage, server maintenance, and monitoring. A project documents an Ubuntu VPS design; it does not establish that every VPS or local board can handle a particular transcoding workload. Test on the hardware and connection you intend to use.
Configure YouTube’s ingest settings
Use RTMPS for a conventional encoder stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for ordinary encoder streaming. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. For audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3; 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Choose a supported video bitrate
YouTube’s current recommendations for H.264 include the following values. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream; the cited page does not state a publication year. It was accessed October 3, 2026.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
Choose a setting that your sustained upload connection can support, with room for audio and network variation, then test it. An encoder can be configured correctly and still deliver an unstable stream if the host or connection cannot sustain the output.

Protect the stream key
The stream key authorizes an encoder to send to the configured stream. Treat it like a credential: do not publish it in an article, screenshot, shared command, or exposed log. Use the current ingest URL and key shown for your broadcast rather than relying on an old saved value.
Use HLS only when its requirements fit
HLS is not a drop-in alternative to RTMPS. YouTube documents it for needs such as HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, and notes that HLS has higher latency. Its requirements include 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance before choosing it.

Make the broadcast unattended without assuming it is unbreakable
A process supervisor such as systemd can start a service at boot and restart a process after some failures. Linux project examples use it for continuous-stream designs, but a supervisor does not prove that playback is advancing, that YouTube is receiving usable video, or that every broadcast will persist indefinitely.
- Define recovery behavior: decide what should happen after an FFmpeg or OBS error, host reboot, network interruption, or YouTube disconnect. Test those cases rather than assuming an automatic restart restores the broadcast correctly.
- Check for a stalled stream: inspect YouTube Studio’s stream health and the host’s process and logs. A process that still exists may not be sending valid, advancing video.
- Validate the full playlist: test files with different resolutions, frame rates, codecs, and audio formats, especially transitions and the end-of-list behavior.
- Keep the key private: avoid placing it where other users can read it or where logs and screenshots expose it.
YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use that test to check both the picture and sound, and to verify that the chosen bitrate and format reach YouTube reliably.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder | Ingest URL, stream key, broadcast configuration, or network reachability | Confirm the current ingest details in YouTube Studio, check that the key is entered correctly, and verify the host can reach the ingest service. |
| Video starts but the stream fails at a particular file | Unsupported or inconsistent file encoding, or a transition the workflow cannot handle | Test that file on its own, inspect its media properties, and test the transition with the surrounding playlist items. Normalize or re-encode incompatible inputs if required by your workflow. |
| Playback ends instead of repeating | Playlist end-of-list behavior | Check the workflow’s loop and ordering configuration; do not assume a folder is automatically replayed. |
| Stream health degrades or drops | Upload capacity, encoding load, or connection interruption | Test at a lower supported resolution or bitrate, check sustained upload performance and host load, and observe whether the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives the stream again. |
| Service restarts but the broadcast is still not healthy | Process supervision is working, but the encoder session or media pipeline is not recovered | Inspect logs and YouTube Studio stream health; test the actual failure and recovery path instead of treating a running service as proof of a live stream. |
