To stream recorded lessons from a folder as one continuous YouTube Live broadcast, create an FFmpeg concat manifest that lists the files in the exact order you want, then send the resulting stream to YouTube using the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. FFmpeg does not automatically scan a directory and sort its files.
This workflow broadcasts prerecorded files live; it does not upload each lesson as a separate YouTube video. Decide what “alphabetical” means for your filenames before making the manifest. For example, should Lesson 10.mp4 come before or after Lesson 2.mp4? The manifest preserves the order you write, so you choose the sequence explicitly.

1. Prepare and order the lesson files
Put the lessons you want to broadcast in one folder. Make a list of filenames in the intended order, then write that order into a separate manifest file. Keeping the manifest outside the media folder avoids accidentally treating it as a lesson.

Check how your filenames sort before creating the list. Ordinary alphabetical order may put Lesson 10.mp4 before Lesson 2.mp4, depending on the sorting tool or convention. If you want numeric lesson order, use zero-padded names such as Lesson 01.mp4, Lesson 02.mp4, and Lesson 10.mp4, or arrange the manifest manually. The manifest—not the directory listing—determines playback order.

Create a concat manifest
For simple filenames without embedded apostrophes or other special characters, create a plain-text file named lessons.ffconcat beside the folder, with this content:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'Lesson 01.mp4'
file 'Lesson 02.mp4'
file 'Lesson 03.mp4'
Replace the example names with the actual files in the order you want. The ffconcat version 1.0 line must be the first line exactly for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Use one file directive for each lesson.
Run the command from the directory containing both the manifest and lesson folder, or use paths that correctly point from your current working directory. If files are in a subfolder named lessons, for example, list lessons/Lesson 01.mp4 instead. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer rejects unsafe paths by default; avoid disabling that protection with -safe 0 unless you understand the path-safety implications.

2. Check that FFmpeg can concatenate the files
The concat demuxer can join packets without re-encoding only when the inputs have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A shared filename extension does not guarantee compatibility: two MP4 files can contain different video or audio codecs, different stream layouts, or different timing parameters.
Inspect each file’s streams with a media-inspection tool such as ffprobe before relying on packet concatenation. Compare the video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, and stream layout across the lessons. If they differ, the concat demuxer may fail or produce an unreliable output.
If the lesson files differ
Prepare the files so they have consistent streams and parameters, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which is intended for concatenation cases that require re-encoding. Re-encoding takes processing time and can affect quality; choose consistent output settings that suit your source material and planned YouTube stream. Do not assume renaming files or changing their extensions makes them compatible.

3. Set up the YouTube Live broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one. YouTube’s setup instructions are in its Live streaming help.
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room and copy its ingest URL and stream key. Use the URL shown for your own stream; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP sent over TLS/SSL. Do not assume that a displayed RTMP address is the secure RTMPS endpoint. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not include it in a screenshot, shared command, public repository, or other material others can access. Treat it like a password for sending video to your channel.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. Its current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, no more than four seconds, square pixels, progressive scan, and SDR Rec. 709. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that every source file or FFmpeg build supports every combination.
Choose a bitrate based on your target resolution and frame rate, your encoder settings, and your available upload capacity. For example, YouTube Help lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/60 fps; its guidance gives different values for other combinations. YouTube also recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Consult the current YouTube bitrate and encoder recommendations rather than applying one arbitrary bitrate to every stream.
4. Send the ordered playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg
With a compatible set of lesson files, use the concat demuxer as the input and the RTMPS URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room as the output destination. The command below shows the structure; replace the endpoint and key with your own values:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i lessons.ffconcat
-c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-re reads the prerecorded input at its normal playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -f concat selects the concat demuxer, and -safe 1 retains its default safe-path handling. Stream copying with -c:v copy -c:a copy avoids re-encoding, but is appropriate only when the source streams are compatible and suitable for the chosen YouTube ingest settings. If they are not, use a preparation or re-encoding workflow instead.
FFmpeg’s output options and available encoders depend on how it was built. If your chosen source codecs, pixel format, frame rate, or audio format do not match YouTube’s accepted configuration, configure compatible encoding rather than assuming the copy command will convert them. Keep the actual stream key out of saved or shared examples.

5. Test before running the full lesson sequence
- Use a short private or unlisted test broadcast, if that fits your channel and test needs.
- Include representative lesson audio and moving video, not just a static opening slide. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health for connection, encoding, and audio problems.
- Confirm the opening lesson and sequence are correct, then make any needed manifest or encoding changes before starting the full playlist.
- If you scheduled the stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and click Go live when you are ready. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish an automatic replay for broadcasts longer than that, so do not rely on an archive if your stream may exceed 12 hours. Plan how you will preserve a replay if one is important.

Common problems and fixes
- Lessons play in the wrong order: FFmpeg is following the manifest, not sorting the folder. Edit the
filelines into the desired sequence and check numeric lesson labels explicitly. - The concat input fails or playback breaks between files: Compare the inputs’ streams, codecs, and time bases. Matching extensions are not enough. Prepare compatible files or use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.
- A filename with spaces or punctuation is not found: Verify the working directory and relative path, then quote or escape the path correctly in the manifest. Keep the manifest’s paths simple where possible, and retain safe-path checking unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- YouTube receives no video or rejects the connection: Confirm that you copied the ingest URL and key for the correct stream, used the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room, and have not exposed or mistyped the key. Check the stream health panel and FFmpeg output for errors.
- The stream starts but has buffering or poor quality: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, then check upload capacity with a speed test. Test again with representative lesson material.
- A scheduled broadcast remains in preview: Once the preview appears and you are ready to broadcast, select Go live in Live Control Room.
Cost and practical trade-offs
The manifest workflow uses FFmpeg and YouTube Live; the files still need to be served from a computer that remains running and connected for the broadcast. Re-encoding may also require enough local processing capacity to handle the selected output settings. YouTube’s stream archive guidance is limited to streams under 12 hours, so account for replay preservation if the broadcast is longer.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a continuous YouTube stream without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded prerecorded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
There is nothing that has to stay on at home, and each slot streams the uploaded quality as-is up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The same features are included across plans; only the billing length changes.
