To stream a folder of MP4 videos to YouTube Live from a Vultr server, install FFmpeg, put the files in playback order in a concat-demuxer list, then send the playlist to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use stream copy only when the files’ codecs and parameters are compatible with the output; otherwise transcode them to settings suited to YouTube. Test the actual playlist and confirm the preview and stream health before relying on it unattended.
Before you start
- A Linux Vultr server with FFmpeg installed and enough CPU capacity if you plan to transcode.
- The MP4 files uploaded to the server, readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- Outbound network access from the server to the YouTube ingest endpoint.
- A YouTube Live event and its ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
Vultr has an FFmpeg installation guide that uses Ubuntu 20.04 as an example and also lists older distribution examples such as Debian 10, CentOS 8, and Fedora 32. Treat those versions as dated examples, not current installation instructions; use the package guidance for the Linux distribution and release actually installed on your server. Prepare the YouTube Live event and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the exact stream URL and stream key from the encoder settings. Select RTMPS if you want the encrypted ingest endpoint; YouTube may show RTMP by default. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends it in its encoder settings guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put a real key in a public command, script, screenshot, or log. YouTube treats it like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
FFmpeg’s output URL must use the exact endpoint and key YouTube provides for that event. The placeholder URL in the example below is not a literal ingest address.

Put the MP4 files in playback order
Create a plain-text playlist file, for example /srv/videos/playlist.txt, with one entry per video in the desired order. Absolute paths make it easier to identify which files FFmpeg will read:

file '/srv/videos/03-outro.mp4'FFmpeg’s concat demuxer treats the listed files as one concatenated input. Check that every path exists and is readable by the FFmpeg process. Prefer straightforward filenames that do not need complicated quoting or escaping. Concatenation does not guarantee seamless transitions: differences in codecs, stream parameters, timestamps, frame rates, or audio layout can cause errors or discontinuities.

Choose stream copy or transcoding

Do not assume that an MP4 container means every file has compatible video and audio streams. Inspect and test the actual playlist. If the files already contain compatible H.264 video and AAC audio and need no changes, stream copy may work; if not, transcode and check the result in YouTube’s preview.

-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'This is not a tested or universal command. Replace the placeholder with the exact RTMPS URL and key arrangement shown in Live Control Room. Set resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, bitrate, and codecs to suit the media and YouTube’s current guidance. The sample’s 4500k video bitrate is not a YouTube recommendation for every resolution.
Stream-copy example
If the playlist’s streams are compatible and you do not need to change them, try stream copy instead of the encoding options:

-c copy -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'As above, use the event’s actual ingest URL and keep the key secret. If FFmpeg reports incompatible streams or YouTube does not accept the feed, inspect the inputs and use a transcode configuration appropriate to the output.

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For H.264 it recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular source or Vultr server can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The example’s -g 60 sets a GOP length in frames, not a fixed two-second interval for every frame rate. For a two-second interval, set the GOP length to roughly twice the output frames per second—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps—and confirm it matches the encoder guidance and the actual output frame rate. Do not exceed YouTube’s recommended four-second interval.
Choose resolution and frame rate based on the source material and the server’s ability to encode and upload continuously. YouTube recommends running a speed test and testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. Allow for network variation rather than treating a speed-test result as proof of sustained capacity. A Vultr plan’s suitability cannot be inferred from the bitrate alone without checking its current network and plan details.

- Run FFmpeg with the playlist and the correct event ingest details.
- Wait for the preview and stream-health indications in Live Control Room. Confirm video, audio, and playback before making the broadcast public.
- For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to begin the encoder feed, wait for the preview, then select “Go live” in Live Control Room.
- When finished, end the scheduled stream through Live Control Room and stop the feed as directed there. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
A playlist without a repeat instruction plays through its listed files once. If you need repeated playback, verify the FFmpeg loop behavior against your intended run before using it for a long broadcast; do not assume that a successful one-pass test proves an unattended loop is reliable.

- FFmpeg cannot open a listed file: Check the spelling and absolute path in the playlist, file permissions, and whether the FFmpeg process runs as an account that can read the media.
- The concat input fails or playback breaks between files: Compare the files’ video and audio streams and parameters. Stream copy is not guaranteed to work across mismatched inputs; transcode to a consistent output when needed.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the event’s exact ingest URL, protocol, and key. Confirm outbound connectivity from the server and that FFmpeg is still running.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the FFmpeg destination before starting again.
- Live Control Room reports poor stream health: Check the output bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and server/network capacity against YouTube’s encoder guidance. Test with representative movement and audio before relying on the setup.
- FFmpeg cannot keep up while encoding: Transcoding consumes CPU. Reduce the encoding workload or use a server that can sustain the chosen settings; stream copy avoids re-encoding only when the source is compatible.
