To stream several gaming videos from a folder as one YouTube Live broadcast, use OBS Studio with a VLC Video source. Add the files to its playlist, set the playback order and looping behavior, then connect OBS to the YouTube event with its stream URL and key. A folder by itself is not a live input: OBS plays and encodes the files, then sends that feed to YouTube.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and install VLC
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube’s current general guidance says live streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- If this is the first time live streaming on the channel, enable it in advance. YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS help page specifies 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video does not appear among the sources, check the installation and architecture. See OBS Media Sources.
- Confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast each video and its audio. A file playing locally does not establish permission to stream it.
Build a playlist from the folder in OBS
- Open OBS and create or select the scene you want to use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, click + and select VLC Video. Name the source, then confirm.
- In the source properties, add the individual video files from your folder to the playlist. OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist option; its Media Source is intended for an individual file and has a single-file loop option.
- Set the playlist order deliberately. By default, VLC Video plays the items in playlist order without shuffling. Enable shuffle only if you want a different sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart at the beginning when the last item ends. Leave it off for a one-pass broadcast.
- Adjust the source in the scene so the video fits the canvas as intended. Check the image framing and how the source transitions between files.
OBS describes the playlist distinction this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” That makes VLC Video the direct choice for a folder-based sequence rather than adding one Media Source per file.
Connect OBS to your YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event and choose the encoder or streaming-software workflow. YouTube’s guide explains how to create a stream with an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into OBS’s stream settings. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the event’s connection details as required by the selected service configuration.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it, show it in a recording, or share it with someone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube explains stream keys and encoder connection details in its setup guide: YouTube encoder setup.
- Use RTMPS rather than RTMP if your encoder and event settings support it. RTMPS encrypts the connection; YouTube recommends it when supported. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Choose stable video and audio settings
OBS’s output must fit both the content and the upload connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain any chosen quality.
- Resolution and frame rate: Use a setting your computer can encode and your upload can carry reliably. For gaming footage, retain a higher frame rate only if the files, encoder and connection support it consistently.
- Bitrate: Select a constant bitrate that is appropriate for the output resolution and frame rate, then check it against the real upload capacity available during the stream.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to 2 seconds where the encoder exposes that option; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: Choose a supported AAC or MP3 audio format and verify that sound is present and at a sensible level throughout the playlist.
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, if your total stream bitrate is B, aim for sustained upload capacity of about 1.2 × B or more; this is a headroom recommendation, not a measured guarantee of performance. See YouTube encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.

Test the actual playlist before going live
Do not assume every file in a folder will decode correctly just because OBS accepts it. Container, codec and audio-track compatibility can vary on the computer running OBS. Play through every item in the OBS playlist and check the full sequence.
- Confirm every file appears, plays, and has the expected image and sound.
- Check that order and shuffle settings match your intent.
- If looping, watch the transition from the final file back to the first; if not looping, check what happens when the playlist ends.
- Inspect framing, black borders or cropping, audio levels, and any unintended desktop or source overlays in the scene.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the real broadcast, then inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health.
YouTube recommends leaving about two hours before an event to set up the encoder and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. That gives you time to inspect the preview and address problems before viewers arrive. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Go live and monitor the broadcast
- Start the OBS stream early enough to see the incoming feed in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Inspect the preview for the correct video, framing and audio before making the event public or starting it for viewers.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and listen for audio problems during the broadcast. If health degrades, check OBS’s dropped frames and encoding indicators, then reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate if the connection or computer cannot sustain the current output.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS sources | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check Sources again. |
| Only one video plays | A Media Source was added instead of VLC Video, or only one item is in the playlist. | Use VLC Video and add each individual file to its playlist. |
| The sequence plays in an unexpected order or repeats | Playlist order, shuffle or Loop Playlist is configured differently than intended. | Review the item order and shuffle setting; enable Loop Playlist only for repeat playback. |
| A playlist item has no picture or sound | The specific file’s container, codec or audio track may not decode correctly on this machine. | Test that file directly in the OBS playlist and verify its video and audio before broadcasting. The source documentation does not guarantee compatibility for every local file. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The wrong event URL or key may be entered, the key may have changed, or live streaming may not be enabled. | Check the current event’s connection details in YouTube Studio, re-enter them in OBS, and confirm the channel is eligible and activated. |
| Stream health is poor or frames drop | The upload connection or computer may not sustain the selected settings. | Check total bitrate and OBS indicators; reduce the output demands and preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a cloud option instead of leaving OBS and a computer running at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube, not camera footage. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
