Use a Premiere when viewers should gather at a shared time with a public watch page and chat. Use a live encoder only when the recording specifically needs to appear as a live broadcast.
Choose how the congregation should watch
| Route | Best when | What viewers get | Technical effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary upload | People can watch whenever they want, or you want the sermon available at a chosen publication time. | A regular YouTube video, public immediately or at the scheduled time. | Lowest: upload the file and set its visibility. |
| Premiere | You want a shared start time and an event people can anticipate. | A public watch page in advance, with a shareable link, reminders and chat; afterward, the video remains on the channel as a regular upload. | Low: schedule the upload as a Premiere; no encoder is needed. |
| Live encoder | The replay must appear as a live broadcast, with a live event watch page and live chat. | A live stream while the encoder sends the recorded video feed. | Highest: configure an encoder, protect the stream key, test and monitor the broadcast. |
Uploading and streaming are different. An upload transfers a finished video to YouTube; its visibility setting determines when viewers can watch it. A live encoder sends a feed to YouTube. Neither a Premiere nor a normal upload requires the Mac mini to stay on after YouTube has received the file.

Upload and publish or schedule the sermon
- On the Mac mini, sign in to YouTube Studio and choose Create → Upload videos. Select the finished sermon video file.
- Enter the title and other video details. Confirm the target audience and that your account has permission to publish on the church channel.
- On the Visibility step, choose the appropriate option:
- Public makes the video available to everyone after processing and publication.
- Unlisted lets people with the link watch it; it is not presented as a public channel video.
- Private restricts access rather than making the sermon generally available.
- Schedule sets a future publication time. The video remains private until that time.
- Review the settings, choose Save, and allow YouTube to process the upload. Check the video’s status in Studio before sharing it as available.
If the congregation expects the sermon at an exact local time, confirm the time zone shown in Studio as you schedule it. YouTube says the “Published on” date displayed on the watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time, so it may differ from the date shown in Studio for a scheduled upload in a time zone ahead of PST.

If a scheduled video does not publish
A Community Guidelines strike can prevent scheduled publication during the penalty period. Check the channel’s status and restrictions in Studio; if publication is blocked, schedule the sermon for a time after the restriction ends.

Use a Premiere for a shared viewing time
- Upload the sermon in Studio and set a future publication time.
- Choose Set as Premiere during scheduling, then review and save the event.
- Share the public watch-page link with the congregation. Viewers can set a reminder and use chat around the event.
A Premiere is still a scheduled video playback, not a live feed from the Mac mini. It suits a church that wants people to gather together; choose an ordinary upload if viewers should simply watch on demand. YouTube Help says Premières do not support Shorts or output above 1080p. A Community Guidelines strike may also prevent publication during a penalty period.
Prepare the sermon video file
Upload a video file, not an audio-only recording. YouTube says an audio file alone cannot be uploaded to create a video; if the sermon is audio-only, combine it with an image to make a video file first.

YouTube’s published upload recommendations specify an MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and keeping the frame rate the same as the original recording. Its detailed encoding-settings page is labeled for Studio Content Manager partners, so ordinary church uploaders should treat those parameters as useful compatibility and troubleshooting guidance, not a mandatory re-encoding checklist. If the file is a standard compatible video, upload it and let YouTube process it rather than re-encoding automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
| Upload recommendation | Published value or format | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Container | MP4 | A recommended format for preparing an upload. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A recommended video encoding. |
| Audio codec | AAC-LC or Opus | Recommended audio encoding options. |
| Frame rate | Same as recorded | Do not change the frame rate simply to match an arbitrary target. |
| 1080p SDR upload bitrate | 8 Mbps at 24, 25 or 30 fps; 12 Mbps at 48, 50 or 60 fps | YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates, not a required setting for every volunteer or file. |
Run a prerecorded sermon as a true live broadcast
Choose this route only if the recording must be presented as a live event rather than a normal video or Premiere. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key to connect the encoder to the channel. A stream key grants the encoder access to connect, so treat it as a credential: do not post it publicly or share it outside the people configuring the broadcast.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open its Live Control Room details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key for that event into the encoder you will use. Keep the key private.
- Configure the encoder to send the sermon video and its audio as the live feed. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder connections; follow the encoder and YouTube settings presented for the event rather than assuming upload encoding settings are automatically the right live settings.
- Set up well in advance. Preview the feed in Live Control Room, check stream health, and confirm that the stream is accessible and that both audio and video are acceptable.
- Start the encoder feed and monitor the broadcast while it is live. When the event is over, stop the feed in the encoder and confirm the event has ended in Studio.
YouTube’s encoder directory lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge, and lists Gyre as a cloud service described for continuous prerecorded-video streams. These are options to investigate, not endorsements or a guarantee of suitability for a particular church channel. They are unnecessary for an ordinary upload or Premiere.
Rights and channel checks before publishing
- Make sure the church has the rights or permissions needed for the sermon recording and every element in it, including music, song performances, slides, photographs and video excerpts. A recording being made by the church does not by itself establish rights to third-party material it contains.
- Check the channel’s Studio status before relying on a scheduled publication or live event; account restrictions can affect whether content publishes as planned.
- Choose the right route for the intended experience: on-demand access, a scheduled communal viewing, or a genuine live broadcast. Do not use an encoder merely to make a finished sermon look live if a normal scheduled upload or Premiere meets the church’s needs.
Common problems and fixes
- The upload is audio-only or rejected as not being a video: make a video file by pairing the audio with a still image, then upload that file.
- The sermon is not visible at the expected time: check its Visibility setting and scheduled time in Studio, including the selected time zone. Also check channel status for a Community Guidelines penalty that could block scheduled publication.
- The watch-page date differs from the date expected by the church: YouTube displays the “Published on” date based on Pacific Standard Time, which can differ from Studio’s date for schedules in time zones ahead of PST.
- The encoder will not connect: confirm that the stream URL and key belong to the intended event and were copied correctly. Keep the key private; if it has been exposed, replace or reset it in Studio before relying on it.
- The live preview has poor or missing audio/video: inspect the encoder output and event settings, preview in Live Control Room, and check stream health before starting the congregation-facing broadcast.
- The live stream is not accessible to the intended audience: verify the event’s visibility and access settings in Studio before sharing the link.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church specifically wants a recorded sermon to run as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
