To stream a church service playlist from a computer, choose YouTube’s webcam route for a simple camera-and-microphone broadcast, or use encoder software when you need a playlist, overlays, external audio, or other production inputs. Set up the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, route the playlist audio into the broadcast, test the entire chain before service, and confirm that every song and recording is cleared for livestreaming. A music license does not guarantee YouTube will leave a stream uninterrupted.
Choose the computer streaming method
YouTube supports two relevant paths: streaming with a webcam or sending a stream through encoder software. The choice affects how you get the service and playlist into YouTube; it does not determine whether you have permission to use the music.

Check channel eligibility first
Before planning the service, verify that the YouTube channel is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current setup guidance describes these as prerequisites for live streaming; check the channel in YouTube Studio if access is unavailable. See YouTube’s setup guidance.

Create the event and connect the source
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule the service stream using the available live-stream setup.
- Select the webcam path for a simple webcam broadcast, or configure encoder software if the service needs overlays or external audio/video. Follow the stream connection details shown for that event; do not share the stream key publicly.
- Prepare the service camera, microphone, and playlist playback. For encoder use, select the intended audio input and confirm the playlist is included in the outgoing mix. For the webcam route, check the chosen microphone and any available sharing/audio controls.
- Use an unlisted or otherwise suitable test to rehearse the complete path. Check Live Control Room’s preview before making the service public, and verify both picture and sound from the viewer’s perspective.
Check upload bandwidth and lead time
Measure the computer’s outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. This is operational guidance, not a guarantee against buffering or connection failures. YouTube also recommends beginning encoder setup at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled stream so there is time to check the preview. Clear playlist music for the actual use
Review every playlist item before the service. Identify whether it is a song performed live, a commercially released master recording, a backing track, or other third-party material. The rights for a live performance and the rights for a recording are not interchangeable. Check coverage for the particular song or recording, the church’s territory, the livestream use, and whether the stream will remain available as an archive.

Understand what a church music licence covers
CCLI describes its Streaming Licence as covering participating songs performed during church services, subject to its terms and song validation. Its Streaming Plus Licence adds specified authorized master recordings and tracks, subject to coverage checks for the recording and label. These descriptions are not individualized legal advice or universal permission: CCLI coverage and terms can vary by jurisdiction, and the church’s country, song list, and existing licences determine what applies. CCLI says recordings used outside the context of church services require additional permission. See CCLI’s streaming licence summary and its guidance on pre-recorded music in livestreams.
Do not assume that buying a track or holding an ordinary church music licence automatically authorizes a YouTube livestream. If your licence requires a copyright notice, follow its format and placement instructions. CCLI’s summary says the notice should include the song title, writer credits, copyright notice, and licence number, and may be placed in the stream or video description; confirm the applicable wording and requirements for your licence.

Account for YouTube Content ID separately
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. When it detects a match, it may replace the broadcast with a placeholder and temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream if the content continues. YouTube says creators who have licensed material may need to ask the rights holder to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. Archived livestreams may receive Content ID claims after the live event ends. Having permission and arranging any required allowlisting are separate from YouTube’s automated enforcement. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance. YouTube’s livestream terms also place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights: Livestream terms and conditions.
Run a service-day check
- Confirm that the channel can livestream and that the correct scheduled event is open in Live Control Room.
- Check the camera framing, microphone, and playlist audio in the preview; make sure the audio mix is not silent or unintentionally dominated by one source.
- Confirm the encoder is connected, if used, and that the stream is stable before the service begins.
- Keep an eye on audio and video during the event, and have a person available to address a dropped connection or a problem with the playlist source.
- Use only playlist items whose rights and any required notices or allowlisting have been checked for this use.
Troubleshoot common problems
